Won the ball, or put a block in on plenty of occasions. ( 6 interceptions, 3 clearances ).

Unfortunately he was every bit as bad offensively as he was good defensively. It can't be easy for him or Luiz when for most of the game they're outnumbered three to two.

Another player sacrificed to play out of position. Was that the first time he's played on the left? He loses 50% of his game being a defensive midfielder. I'm sure Conor sympathises.

I feel sorry for him gives 110% but struggles so much of the time.  He’s certainly not a defensive midfielder far too clumsy with possession and fouls.    His bet asset is moving forward with the ball abd the occasional shot on goal

He's got 1 league goal in something like 40 games now, being the defensive midfielder definitely doesn't suit his natural game.

There are mitigating factors to McGinns poor form not least the defensive midfielder bit but as much as I love him is he a regular starter in a top 6 Premier League team? I think he's most at risk from any major midfield spending this summer.

However that's a discussion for the summer, how do we get the best out of him now. I like the 2 x 8s theory being banded about elsewhere with Doug sitting as a number 6.

The formation West Ham drove a horse and cart through only a couple of weeks back?

Agreed on McGinn's form. Think he struggles with a high press. His big arse only covers for a ropey enough first touch and his range of passing is quite limited. He looks to be running on empty too last few games. No zip to his movement at all.

I thought he looked quite resilient under pressure in possession, he just seemed quick to join in with the mode du jour of giving the ball back with a shoddy pass after doing the hard bit.

I'm blaming the blue shorts, they're as cursed as claret socks.

We didn't play a diamond against West Ham.

I wish we could allow him more attacking freedom, he is not an ideal 10 but he would not give defenders in posession an easy ride.

Seems a very strange match to highlight his performance to be honest, I thought he was largely awful.

It’s because I bought a pair (of the shorts).

I took from that article to say that McGinn and Luiz are doing a better job of protecting the back 5 this season than they did last season. We would have lost that game last season, probably by some margin. The squad needs to evolve over the next few windows to a point that nobody is a guaranteed starter and there are genuine options to change things around without having performance levels drop off. If we can bring some of our kids through that will help too.

Needs dropping.

Barkley needs dropping before McGinn - bring in Sanson and give McGinn a bit more freedom to get forward.
