I'd say this is a good move.  He has good experience has worked at a high level, and is level headed.  He could a good sounding board for Sherwood.
It will only work if he has quality players to work with.
See fulham where he was a disaster.

So if we have bad players we'll do badly and if we have good players we might do well?

Definitely an upgrade on what we've been used to recently and what seems like forever - since Little/Gregory/Evans. He has experience and contacts within the game and a high profile.

That said I couldn't stand him as a player - 86 Caps for passing the ball sideways and a meeja darling to boot. Every thing that was wrong with English football at the time. Excellent goal in Cup Final though

I dont remember his playing style that much

I know Big Ron called him the Crab , but he played for Man Utd and AC Milan so he must have had some ability ???

Of course he did. He was a much a victim of the English safety first mentality which probably stifled his creative ability a little. Had a very good first touch.

That said no way did he deserve 86 Caps. No way. Not when a certain Mr G Cowans got a whole 10.

I remember us losing to Portugal, drawing with Morocco and stuffing Poland in the group. Might have been Morocco.

If I remember correctly, we lost 1-0 to Portugal, during which Wilkins was sent off. We then drew 0-0 with Morocco, during which Robson did his shoulder in. We then beat Poland 3-0, with Lineker getting all three.

I thought Wilkins was sent off against Morocco?

He was for throwing the ball away I think  ? and Robson got injured that game

the thing that sticks out for me in that game was Wilkins waiting for the ball from the ball boy and shouting "give me the F****** ball" which came over on the TV
quickly followed by Brian Moore apologising

No he didn't - only 53 according the Wikibible. That makes it worse. Hoddle was a much better footballer than Wilkins.

I agree with Rob. Wilkins and Robson were like Lampard and Gerrard. Lots of people, managers especially, rated them very highly, but they were always a let-down in tournaments. Hoddle, however, really was a great player. Him only getting 53 caps was a joke.

Cowans and Hoddle should have been the first choice midfield. Sid was great in his first nine games. He was there to stay IMO, then he broke his leg.

BTW, anyone remember who got in the side for the next game and made a huge difference? Clue: he was from the same club as the bloke who did exactly the same thing for England at Italia '90.

Oh dear  :-[

Ray Wilkins ?

I would really like to know who iniated this appointment. Fox or 'Tactics' ?

Ray Wilkins is a "recovering alcoholic" - 4 times over the limit on his second drunk driving arrest, whilst on bail from his first drunk driving. Jeez.

Whilst he was christened "the crab" as a player --- by the immortal Big Ron ---for always passing easy sideways, rarely finding a forward runner at Chelsea, it is his
Manager /Assitant Manager / Caretaker Manager roles I have a REAL PROBLEM with
his chronology:-

Fulham - SACKED
Chelsea - SACKED
Watford - SACKED
Millwall - "Went with Wise"
England U21s - Dispensed/ Not retained
Chelsea (again)- Publicly advised "contract not going to be renewed - will leave immediately" 6 months early

Fulham (again) - 2 months - removed

Whatever it is about him, God Knows, but his average time as a Manager or Assistant Manager, Coach or Caretaker...is....... 8 and a half months.

His average life as a pundit, TV/Radio goes into years.

Chris Evans  once said (after Ray had bad-mouthed Gazza for being a drunk --YES  :'( ) that Ray Wilkins was photgraphed more, coming out of Soho Square FA Headquarters, whilst out of work, than Gazza had ever been outside a pub or club.
Evans would know, as he was doing TFI -(whatever his Friday C4 show was called  :D)
at that time and would have had all the papp & goss rubbish.

Ray Wilkins is a networker/brown-noser supreme, imo, wherever he has worked, what on Earth has he achieved?

How long has he kept a job ? :'(

Some managers they say are good for 6-9 months, same for their coaches.

We have an excellent Asst Manager/Coach already - why do we need Wilkins ?

 :o

I agree and especially as guy is old and out of touch. He's 60 has a lot of problems off field and is old school rather the progressive. Its a global game but this is just jobs for the boys. The only thing in his favor is experience. Seems like twood wanted to help out wilko for a distraction to his drinking. But then grealish cant listen to any talks about being. Sensible offf piitch if coaches aren't the same.

I heard James Beattie came into Swansea and soonner have him. Villa need either a coach with knowledge of premier league and recently played to relate to players. Rio Ferdinand, Phil Neville , shay given even Joe Cole

I don't mean to be rude, but that post was hilariously bad and basically absolute rubbish. Bringing Chris Evans into a post about football says it all really.

The age thing is irrelevant, being able to consistently pass the ball to a bloke in the same colour shirt transcends all eras of football. If he can get us to do that it would dramatically improve us as a team.

With Man U, Rangers and Millwall also on his CV, that's quite a collection of objectionable former employers he has. I wonder if anybody can boast more?

That was a great advert. I've just looked it up on Wikipedia and it only aired ten times.
You forgot arguably the most objectionable of them all. Chelsea.

No, he didn't

He did Richard, he started his career at Chelsea, though he was known as Butch in those distant days.

I never rated him that highly as a player but I do recall him saying something to the extent that the ref should hav been lenient on Hendrie when he was sent off for two yellow cards on his debut at QPR  He seemed genuine when he said it, which is why I recall it.
i was at that match. Most pissed I've ever been at a villa match
