Richards signing is very Sherwood the 110% effort is his idea of winning. The bosman move will cost villa in region of £2.5 mil to 3.5 a year. Signing on fee at £650 to 750 thou. We are looking at clauses and bonus for appearances, win matches any eng cal up and team performance targets. I feel glad of signing as it's a seeming replacement for big Ron. Big mica was a boyhood arsenal fan but he's welcomed to the club

The suggestions about 352 are misleading if you read the articles posted on here...the reference to 352 actually explains why he didn't get that many games in Italy rather than the formation change being to accommodate Richards.

I hope we don't consider him only as a central defender, if we're struggling on the right I'd like to think we're happy to move him out one and bring in a central defender to try to fix it, that flexibility is something we should always be looking for because as well as helping with injury cover it also means you can make tactical changes during games, I'm fedup of seeing Villa have 1 game plan that we follow regardless of whether it's working, we've had 9 years of that under Lerner and it's made us predictable and dull.

An interesting enough interview.

Refreshing and different interview that. Like how he doesn't always give the obvious answer, eg: playing for England. I can certainly see the point of people on here questioning his injury record. I don't think that is being overly negative. Still potentially a class act and if it's indicative of a change in our spending habits, this is great news (of course it could just be spending the Bent/Vlaar wages)

Not sure if this has been posted up (couldn't see it) but this is another decent interview with him from Football Focus. Obviously ignore the goal he got against us at the end.

I think he'd certainly be an improvement on what we have and I like how he comes across. He obviously wants to play regular football and has matured as a person/footballer judging from these interviews. He must be pretty determined/focused/desperate to play regularly to be willing to give up the beauty and weather of Florence. That speaks volumes to me. Big wages aside I hope he signs. I think he'd do well for us and be a good fit.

Let's face it, we'd be miffed if he was signing for Leicester or Newcastle.

Spot on

You have to feel sorry for the Arsenal physio. In the week he gets shot of Abou Diabi he then finds out he might be getting Ron Vlaar.

Why sorry? In the world of a physio the arrival of Ron Vlaar would be job security. Like a mechanic, he wouldn't be happy if there aren't any cars to fix. If Ron Vlaar was a car he'd always have a leak, a rattle or a Check Engine light on.

Shouldn't that website read:

One of the self-proclaimed finest defenders in Europe?

Very good potentially, I know who I would rather have next season, him or Vlaar. If we've offered him the contract we wanted Vlaar to sign, it's much better for us.

Vlaar to Arsenal then....FFS

There a lot of positives.

He's a first team player for one and better than what we have, with age on his side and the attitude too. He's a proven Premeir League player, a good one at that, and we have signed precious few of those in the past five seasons.

If we can add similar quality to the midfield, then we may be able to avoid repeating the same nonsense we have for years.

Would anyone else think that Richards could make an excellent holding midfielder? He hasn't played there (as far as i'm aware) but he has the physical attributes to give us the speed, strength and power needed to fulfil that role quite well.

He'd certainly be a better option than Sanchez in that position, so if he were tasked to do the job of breaking up play, winning the ball and laying the ball off to the more creative players then playing the "Coquelin" role could suit him.

Deal expected to be completed within a week according to Pete Colley, who I sincireley hope is £100 richer soon too.

I can't see why anyone would be unhappy with this.

the big reason for me is that his wages could cause problems amongst the existing players unless he is considerably better than the average (which I doubt he will be).  With these free transfers I would prefer that the wage stays comparable with the rest of the squad and bonuses/lump sums are paid when milestones of the contract are achieved.
