This explains the basis of the deal.  So looks like we won't be seeing him again.

Paid loan for one season and obligation to buy after the season.

If there's an obligation to buy, with no get outs, that's fair enough.

I would rather have given him a chance at this level, but if the manager doesn't rate him then it's better to let him go while we still get some cash, than it is to keep sending him on perpetual loans while his value dwindles.

You see this increasingly now - isn't it basically a way of the buying team putting off the transfer fee/paying it in installments via loan fees? We'll probably do much the same with Johnstone.

To be fair, he is only really ever going to be effective in one position (the 'number 10' role) and we:

a.) may not want to play a system that incorporates that role
b.) may think there are a few players ahead of him in that position (Grealish, Lansbury, McCormack) if we did

I remember one of his first games at VP in the FA Cup against Bournemouth (who were in the Championship at that time) and he caused them all kinds of problems.

I think he can play as out and out winger, indeed that's where I remember him playing against Bournemouth.

Bruce doesn't seem to like wingers though, the boring twat.

Apart from him picking Adomah in nearly every game last season.

I can't remember which came first,  but around that time he came on against Liverpool and played against Bournemouth and looked good in both appearances.  I have to disagree about him being a wide player because I don't think he is quick enough and doesn't defend well.  In fact, I remember one of the first few games of Sherwood's time here (might have been against Stoke) where he was playing wide and didn't track back.  Sherwood went barmy on the touchline and Gil was soon off, hardly to be seen again.

No, Gil's not a winger. He could possibly play out wide and drift in but not as an out and out winger I don't think.

The indications seem to be that we are changing to five at the back with wing-backs this season, so no wingers.

I'm struggling to see why we would be after yet another right back otherwise.

Other than last night where we played 4-4-2 in both games and started with wingers.

We haven't signed him yet.

I hope you're right, but I see no point in us signing a wing back if we don't play with wing backs.

Isn't the alleged wing back actually a winger that can play wing back? Or am I going to disappear into a wing vortex?

Didn't Gil score an absolute worldy in that game against Bournemouth, playing on the right wing?
