I thought Gil got a rough deal against Stoke. Perhaps not the ideal game to show off to the boss. He'd not looked that powder puff before hand, but he had in fairness just come back from an injury, which may have played on his mind a bit. I'm sure he'll toughen up a bit. Players like that are good at evading though. Like Silva. A gnats fart could blow him over but players can't get near him and if they do they give away a free kick.

I'm glad he's gonna get a chance. I think there's plenty of promise there.

I agree completely, I can just understand why you'd watch that and think that he probably wasn't the right guy to have in for the run in
I can see that in isolation, but for me it just doesn't tally with why N'Zogbia chugging around the pitch and occasionally falling over WAS the right guy to have in for the run in.

When I look down the years at players we've had at Villa, N'Zogbia must be up there with the most useless, pathetic, half-arsed ponies we've ever had. I'm glad Sherwood has seen the light with Gil.

When transfer fee x wages x length of contract x potential resale value are all factored in, there can't be too many who have cost us more compared with what they have delivered.

I reckon N'Zogbia would probably still win - longer contract, bigger transfer fee.

I can think of a couple of games over the years that N'Zogbia put in good performances, and one in particular (West Ham at home 12/13) that he won by himself.  Its not a lot but its more than Ireland ever managed.

"On 31 December 2011, Ireland scored his first ever goal for Villa in a 3–1 away win at Chelsea, scoring the opener and assisting the third goal in a man of the match winning performance. At the end of the season, after some impressive displays, Ireland was voted Aston Villa's Supporters' player of the season"

He's overall career was rubbish but I still think he did more than Charles.

N'Zogbia was alright in some of the games in the run in.

Ireland was a waster of epic proportions. I guess the real issue isn't who was worse out the two, but rather that one replaced Milner and the other Young and Downing. Therein lies a significant reason for why we went from 6th the 16th.

That Chelsea game was the one bright spot in McLeish's time with us.

I don't agree with the degree of his exclusion and I'd not have nzog anywhere near the team but I can only assume that TS thought both were a risk and he was happier taking the risk with nzog than with Gil.

I honestly have no idea how Stephen Ireland won player of the year. He was fucking terrible. Maybe he was slightly less terrible than some of the others, but I'd still have had Petrov for half a season, or Robbie Keane for 10 games ahead of Ireland that season. Or Given.

Yep, it just confirms that he was the least terrible player that season.

When transfer fee x wages x length of contract x potential resale value are all factored in, there can't be too many who have cost us more compared with what they have delivered.

It's forgivable of course, but surely you haven't forgotten Balaban?

Nah, I don't reckon he's a contender.

If we were doing something along the lines of "minutes played versus total expenditure" then he'd probably be right up there, but a £5.8m transfer fee and £20,000 per week for two years doesn't come close to £9.5m plus around £40,000 per week for four and a half years, even allowing for inflation and increases in income.
