next time there is a stand to be named I'll suggest that our 4 founding fathers should get a name check somewhere.

Or maybe just combine the four into one and name it The Admin Stand.

Chuckles.

By calling them a troll? Yes, that's how you disagree with someone. Anyway, I like the Risso/fibrai idea of a gas lamp and 4 blokes around it. In front of the Holte would be nice as there's quite a bit of space there. Would prefer in front of the Trinity but wouldn't want that area to become too cluttered.

I like that idea too.

So do I.

He wasn't manager though. McMullan was our first manager.

Fuck that. He got mentioned by a commentator (along with his honours) during the Cup Final I think it was. He deserves it and so do we. We shouldn't deny our own mythology, nobody else does.

Hear, hear!  I'll also be spinning this fact to all and sundry by pointing out that Ramsay masterminded our successes without the help of Sky TV and financial doping - which makes  him a million times the gaffer Fergie ever was.

We did have financial doping though, to an extent. Our stadium and attendances made us able to pay far better wages than many of our competitors.

We only stopped winning everything so regularly when they introduced the maximum wage in 1901.

A fair point, though I'm sure I read somewhere that Villa weren't the biggest payers of the era (I think Liverpool and Wolves were).

There are plenty of tributes to our founders around the ground - the words "Aston Villa" are everywhere.
Very few other clubs still play under the name given them by their founders. And no other club has such a fantastic name!

Looks like this idea has got legs. I'm not going to get in touch with the club immediately.

Who'd've thought a Stephen Ireland suggestion would be so popular.

So a gas lamp is being unveiled before the Southampton game

Will it be on the pitch, holding a scarf over its head?

Quote
Legend has it that on November 21 1874, four members of the Wesleyan Chapel male adult bible class met under a gas lamp in Heathfield Road to form Aston Villa.

The four founding fathers of our club are believed to be Jack Hughes, William H Price, George Matthews and William H Scattergood.

140 years on, we were delighted to receive a letter from Villa fan David Rose from Sutton Coldfield about creating a lamp that could pay homage to that special moment in our club's history.

And - we liked the idea so much that the production process began almost immediately.

The lamp will be over three metres tall and set on a plinth with brass plates that tell the story of the foundation of the club.

As with the statue of William McGregor outside the Trinity Road Stand at Villa Park, David believes the lamp will act as a point of interest for fans young and old and a place for generations of fans to meet.

He said: "I'm very excited and honoured that the Founding Lamp is going ahead.

"The main idea behind the lamp was so parents could stand under the lamp and explain the heritage and meaning behind it to their children.

"It's something that's very close to my heart and I can't wait to see it at the Southampton game."

David will be helping the club unveil the lamp alongside descendants of Jack Hughes and William Scattergood prior to the Southampton game (7pm).

We are yet to track down descendants for the other two gentlemen but welcome any information that fans may have.

Please send to facebook@avfc.co.uk.

The unveiling is a public event and you are welcome to come down and watch.

A replica gas lamp outside the ground somewhere would be quite a nice idea I think. A nod to history without going down the full blown statue route.

I wonder if David robbed this?
