Yeah forgot to mention it in that post but from what we saw in the first few months of 2001-02 Alpay-Mellberg was shaping up to be as good a combination as Southgate and Ugo as they seemed to complement each other perfectly.

Mellberg was the same age as Lowton and Clark are today, says it all.

Quite a few over 40 years, Simon Stainrod, Warren Aspinall, Sasa Curcic, Nigel Callaghan are just a few from years gone by.

Gary Charles never appeared to be overly popular with the Villa Park faithful.

He was excellent in the season we did well under BL, and before he got injured.

Not really, for example God was still playing for St Pat's at that age.

Going back a bit but a player I remember getting vitriolic abuse from the crowd was the late Brian Tiler. If I remember correctly ( I am sure someone can validate this) the barracking got so bad in one match Tiler was substituted and replaced by Davy Rudge.
Tiler must have had some backbone however as he overcame the antithesis towards him and became a well respected midfielder whose performances led us to the League Cup final against Spurs.

I was only a pre-teen kid but remember Tiler being particularly unpopular. He obviously had something us fans couldn't see though  because I recall him being club captain and a regular starter under both Tommy Docherty and Vic Crowe.

I just seem to remember him and Alan Wright both getting dogs abuse for a period under Little.

I think that much of the abuse that Tyler received was mainly due to the simple fact that he didn't fit the prototype for a centre back in that era (nor did Bobby Moore, of course!).

I think the 'stick' Tiler used to get was because he was signed by Tommy Doc and was his 'man' who never would be dropped, even though his performances sometimes warranted it.
I remember his debut, he was only signed the day before I think, it was on Boxing Day 1968 against Cardiff on a snow covered pitch, he scored in front of the Holte and looked the part as Doc saved us from relegation and we also went on a great FACup run beating QPR and Southampton, remember Dave Rudge's winner in front of the Holte as one of my top ten Villa moments, 57,000 in the ground I recall.
Tiler was also used in midfield a bit, wore the no.10 shirt in the win over Blues in the last game of the season, but the next season when so much was expected of Villa his form dipped and of course the Doc was sacked.
Although he skippered Villa to Wembley and a decent season under Vic Crowe, the following season his form really dipped and he was in and out of the side that had George Curtis, Fred Turnbull, Neil Rioch and Malcolm Beard vying for centre half roles.
As Villa stormed to promotion from the Third Division and signed Ian Ross and Chris Nicholl the writing was on the wall for Tiler, and he signed for Carlilse.
The Villa fans barracked him a couple of times, I remember, because he was a player who was prone to error and mistakes because he tried to play the ball out of defence, but Docherty would just not drop him and publicly stood up for him.

Didn't Brian Godfrey skipper Villa to Wembley? I Reckon Tiler was gone by the time we played Spurs in the final.

Yes mate you are right, Brian was skipper then, but Tiler played centre back with Fred Turnbull.

Dreadnaught Ken also took some time to win over the fans after his signing from Everon.
Keown never did it for me, always looking to leave.
