For someone who didn't want the job, and which we didn't offer it to, its a pretty impressive fuss. God knows what would have happened if he had wanted the job.

Most of the fuss has been from the fans and the press. And for someone who didn't want him, you are making more of a fuss then most.

Well the original point was about how we approached managers, which seems to be done through their club officially before we even know if they want the job or in our case whether we want them. I think its a daft way of doing things but each to their own. I'm pretty sure if we'd spoken to OGS off the record first then all the fuss wouldn't have blown up, and if it had it would have been when he agreed to join  us, NOT when we went to talk to him.

I think its a daft way of doing things but each to their own. I'm pretty sure if we'd spoken to OGS OTR record first then all the fuss wouldn't have blown up, and if it had it would have been when he agreed to join us us, NOT when we went to talk to him.

The big flaw with that is that, in every interview Solskjær gave from the Friday when he came here to the Tuesday or whenever it was when he said he wasn't up for it, he said he was interested. It wasn't like we flew him over, he said "fuck that, I'm not up for it" then we flew him back.

You speak a lot of sense on some subjects, Greg, but you've dug yourself into a massive hole with this one, and you're really only succeeding in digging yourself in deeper.

Not to mention the fact that, ultimately, when he thought about it, he didn't want to come, so really, what would we have gained by doing it any other way? The difference between yes I'm interested, and no I am not is really not going to be anything to do with us sending a jet to pick him up, and if it was, what sort of appointment would he have been?

Not sure about that Paulie. that first press conference after the Lerner meeting to me sounded like he wasn't interested, but others on here at the time thought he sounded like he was. I certianly didn't see loads of "come and get me" signals that others did, just wishful thinking.

Really don't want Di Matteo. He was rubbish for WBA, he's just a good fit for Chelsea. History with the club, and lenient on the super stars. I don't think he would sort out our squad.

I wouldn't mind Di Matteo, he wasn't rubbish at West Brom he got them promoted after getting MK Dons 3rd in the table.
Actually West Brom played some decent football under him and at the time I thought it was an unfair sacking even though they were struggling.

At Chelsea he did what was needed to be done at the time to get the right results, I think even I could stand negative football if we won something.

Spot on, same for me too

to defensive, i'm absolutely pig sick of being bored shitless at Villa Park, sick to death of the dross served up,
i want someone with an attacking mentality, i'm to old for negative tacktics i want some fun

To say RDM is defensive is based on their CL games.  Chelsea used tactics and a game plan to beat Barca and Bayern, two of the best teams in Europe.  They were hardly defensive when they beat Spurs 5-1 or QPR 6-1.  He would be good for us.

he's Italian, Negative is there default position
no amount of your stats will change that, there is no such thing as a Italian manager who has the same philosophy on playing football as say Martinez or Rogers or Wenger or Beilsa it just doesnt happen

you can make a case on the internet for him, but in the end he will be defensive, especially if he hasnt got players who are better than the opposition which is what he will have at Villa for the main part

this does not mean he cant be successful, he might even play winning football, but the backbone of his tactics will be negative, and any one that tells you different is talking nonsense

Ahh nothing like a national stereotype!  Mancini was negative in winning in the league and scoring the most goals wasnt he?!!

He said he was interested, and to the Norweigian press after the first conference said that he hoped to speak to us again. He batted his eyelids enough for us to ask his club to speak to him, I am 100% confident of that.

I think Martinez would be perfect. I mean he's got a rubbish team playing above themselves, has a decent record with developing players (Moses) and is not afraid to have a go against the 'elite' clubs. He's put himself into a position where he's ready for step up. I'd be more than happy given the other candidates out there and seems to fit the bill set out by the board, is passionate and has a very positive attitude.

On the other hand, he avoided relegation this time by an impressive end of season run of 9 games, prior to which he couldn't buy a win. Last season he stayed up purely on the freak results of others on the last day. He organised a minute's applause to celebrate staying in the league. Is that really enough to be in contention for jobs like Villa and Liverpool? If he has another season at Wigwam where they finish nicely mid-table then progress will have been made but everyone is jumping on the last nine games of his three years there and proclaiming him to be a genius,  whereas the vast majority of those years his team has been dire! Two sides to every coin I suppose, three if you look carefully!

EDIT: And a £3m 'transfer' fee and £2m/year wages, very expensive too. Is he really worth that?

He would'nt have jumped on the plane in the first place if he was'nt tempted by the idea.

Besides, did'nt the Molde directors leak answers to some questions they asked him which he said amongst other things said he would leave if offered the job, take one of his backroom staff and go back for their best player?

It's not a bad one is it when the previous poster said all Italian managers are negative because they are ... Italian, is it?!!

But his natural mentality has been negative since being at City in truth.

At times yes but you can't do more than win the league and score more goals than anyone else can you?

OGS said he would travel straight away if offered the job, and bring with him two coaches and a player.

How anyone surmises he didn't want the job at any point from this I have no idea.

EDIT: more or less what Clampy said.

And also, you know, it's probably wrong to give somebody any label based on their nationality. Or maybe I'm just new fashioned.

Its the same with the anti-Di Matteo lot. He's not negative. He was negative against Barcelona because it was Barcelona and frankly you get pummelled if you try and attack them, in the final he was negative because half the team was suspended or injured. He's no more negative than poyet or Martinez
