I think the manager job would be very tempting for a young ambitious manager.

He would be starting from a low base if the older players with only a year on their contract to go leave.  There would be very few 'big ego' players in the club.  Providing the manager is given time by the supporters and the club, he could build a team that was a true reflection of how he wants to play football.

If a young manager has enough belief in is own ability and has vision, AVFC manager is a fantastic opportunity and let's not forget, goes with a circa £2m salary.  If the current managers have thoughts of managing the Man Utds etc, they are not going to get there straight from the likes of Norwich, Swansea, Wigan etc.

Before we even start looking for a new manager, Randy needs to sit down and consider what he wants to do with the club. Only then can he cut his cloth in the shape of a new manager. The thought of wearing rags for another season is not an option. The sooner he realises that, the better.

...and that person will be Italian. And he's doing a temporary job at the moment.

With the Lerner/Faulkner knowledge of the football world being what it is, I assume you're talking about one of the waiters at your local pizzaria...
Very good.
This bit should be taken with a pinch of salt as with all ITK's........I heard yesterday that an exploratory approach has been made to the gentleman in question.

I'd be happy with him but even if he doesn't get the Chelsea job I think he'd turn us down and hold out for a bigger job.

The gentleman in question didn't exactly rip up trees at one of our esteemed neighbours (although he did have a good start), but has to be better than our present encumbent

  For me

   1st...................Martinez
   2nd..................Hoddle/Wilkins combination
   3rd...................Rodgers
   4th...................Lambert

I can't believe we can't attract any one of those on the list.

I don't think anyone with a good reputation is going to come here unless we've got money to spend. The squad needs and overhaul and I don't see the likes of Lambert or Martinez coming unless they get the money to overhaul it.

The likes of Dunne, Collins and Warnock are on the decline and will be content to see out their deals for the final year, unless we are willing to take big losses on them (and then stump up the cash to replace them). And that's before even considering replacing Guzan, Cuellar, Petrov and Heskey.

We do have some promising kids, but they're not guaranteed and it's not going to be enough to entice a coach who has no previous knowledge of them. That's why I think that if we can't spend big, and we're relying on 6 or 7 players who've got less than 50 games under their belt we might as well give it to Kmac and Sid. Atleast they know the kids inside out and will get the supporters back onside.

i cant be doing with Wilkins he was an overated player, and only did any good at Chelsea for about a year as a go between for the manager and players, he is totally out of his comfort area in management. he has been an abysmal failure everywhere else

his comfort zone being talking unoffensive driffell especially about Man Utd and Chelsea

Hoddle? Seriously?

I know this kind of thinking is a little out there and might get me put in the nut house, but isn't there someone on the bloody continent that we can attract?

And please, I never want to hear again that the future manager must have PL experience. What a crock of shit that is.

A big 'no' to Hoodle here. One thing we must learn from is not to bring in a manager that has been out of the game for some time. O'Leary, MON and Houllier all had their faults and much can be put down to them easing their way into the job.

We need somebody that will hit the ground running.

Lambert or Rodgers would be great, someone off centre a little would be Laudrup. Had some mixed results where he's been, but tries to get his teams to play the right way, done well with Getafe and at Mallorca under extreme circumstances.

if Aston Villa cant attract the likes of Rogers, Lambert,Martinez who else will ?

the days have gone when Man Utd will offer the job to a up and comer to take charge like last time,
the top 6 will not look at them as the clubs they are at are to small to challenge for much apart from winning the battle against relegation every year

so there next step is teams like Villa, Spurs, Everton, Newcastle,( Leeds and Sheff Wed  if they were in the prem) clubs with bigger support bases ie 35k and above, that coupled with a 2 mill salary a year should be enough to tempt any of the names above.

the reason it didnt last time with Martinez is because we went round it the wrong way and got our knickers in a twist about what we were doing, i think they will have learnt from that and do things a bit better next time

Hoddle is a no no. He would completely knacker things up. Lambert or Martinez would be good but i don't see them coming, especially Lambert when he has work in progress at Norwich.

Despite the season we've had, Aston Villa manager is still a massive job in football for somebody with ambition. I just hope Randy realises this.

I think youre right John. Even in our current state we should be able to attract those types of managers. A far superior salary, far bigger fan base, our history and ground all come into play. A whatever we think of him on here,it seems that Randy would be a good bloke to work for.
