I have heard, in fact only this morning, talking to someone that still scouts for the club, that McLeish is on a tightrope, and in noway is he being guaranteed next season.

That makes very little sense when you consider that he's already been allowed to recruit one player for next season.  If you aren't sure you'll be keeping your manager, then you wait until you know before giving him money to spend.

Thing is John, players join clubs all the time with the knowledge if thing go shitways then the manager gets canned. Holman has joined Villa to play in the PL, not McLeish. He's relatively oblivious to most things Villa right now, so he won't really care who the manager is the day he arrives. He'll be playing in the PL for a big club. He'll have got what he wanted.

True. Barry joined Citeh because Mark Hughes wanted him, then Hughes was subsequently shipped out. Bent joined Villa under Houllier's shaky tenure and Ireland joined Villa when we didn't even have a manager.

I see Jamie Redknapp has an article on Sky Sports that says we should follow the Newcastle route. It's actually surprisingly not too bad an evaluation of our current predicament on the whole. Although I'd add in get rid of Mcleish.

I'd rather see the 'Newcastle route' in operation for another season before wanting to go down it. I have a sixth sense they will fall away rapidly next season although one has to acknowledge what a good year they have had, albeit in a league where achieving somewhere around 5th place is probably as easy as it has ever been. More's the pity we can't take advantage of that ourselves, even if it does result in the less than appetizing platter of Europa Cup matches on a Thursday evening and subsequent 1pm kick offs on every subsequent Sunday!

I agree, I'm thinking more in the scouting approach. There's no doubt they've picked up some very good players for a relatively small outlay.

...

I'm more than happy to do my bit. No more salads for me.

Unfortunately his advice is about 6 years too late.

I think thats the only way we can be sucessful in the transfer market nowadays, especially with the price of British players, look how much Liverpool over spent last summer, even players in the lower leagues are over priced. I think Palace turned down a 6.5 million bid for Zaha in January,he has potential but has only played a season or so in the Championship.

Were not gonna be able to afford or attract established players,so up and coming foreigners has to be the way forward, its worked for Wigan for a few years now,we need to do it on a higher level.

I think both you and Paul are probably right. As I have said previously on here, Racist FC have done a damned good job of immitating us from about 3 years ago in paying vastly over the odds for 'good'ish on their day' English players. Like us at that time, they can't attract the cream of the crop, what precious little of it there is these days - certainly as far as English talent goes -  and so have to settle for this second tier of signings

Newcastle have been smart enough get players who cost little outlay and I would imagine much lower wages than buying from the UK market. The players they have brought in the last 12-18 months are all gettable players we could of had with better scouting

Fine but why not the Swansea route? Or the Everton route? Maybe even the Sunderland route!

The point is surely this: it's about picking the right manager for the job! The Barcode / Swans / Everton route is about getting a manager who can work within the constraints set by the owners. The three clubs mentioned above have got the right manager for their circumstances ... and I'll leave you to decide how to complete the sentence re Villa's ciircumstances!

Has nobody thought that maybe Newcastle have just been very lucky with their signings? How many teams, even the top teams, can claim to have a success rate like they've had of late with the signings they've made? None.

I'd settle for that.  The rest of Europe doesn't seem to have an issue with the Europa League, not sure why we look down on it so much.

Its all well and good making the right signings but the manager has to get them playing as well.  Look at Chelsea for example.  Scolari came in, started off well and then fell away and got then sack.  Hiddink came in and lifted the team and they improved.  Proof that manager was at fault.
Pardew needs to be given some credit for maintaining their form consistently throughout the season.  They have made good signings but calling them lucky signings?  bit harsh on them

Thats where we're screwed,as were gonna be stuck with McCleish for at least another few months, except if we go down. My fear is that if he hangs around,he won't have the ability to help our youngsters to progress by playing the shite football we play.
