Chances are most players would think twice about giving a verbal spray to a female lino for a contentious decision too. Positive discrimination? Maybe.

From personal experience I can confirm that is not the case at all. Most players are more likely to give you a spray because you are female and sometimes you have no choice but to flash the yellow or red as some players' IQ's don't justify you giving them credit for intelligence and trying a word on the run warning.

Well perhaps if you were to learn the offside rule they wouldn't be so nasty! ;)

It's puzzling that it's mainly men expressing their indignation.  Women can't have it both ways; we either expect a man to defend and protect our honour and fragility or we expect equality and demonstrate our worth on an even playing field, as Sian Massey emphatically did.

Having lived, worked and played in male dominated environments for many, many years, I am more than able give as good as I get, and that is what I consider equality.  The hypocrisy of certain female businesswomen who have connections with those in the soft porn trade does women no favours whatsovever.

I've got no time for the 'Sky Two', particularly Smarmy Keys, but personally I find it more 'sexist' for men to be offended on my behalf.  That is patronising.  Has anyone asked Sian Massey if she was offended?  I'm willing to bet that she, like most of us women, has dealt with far worse than a 'women-don't-understand-offside' comment.  She will have anticipated some abuse, as would her male counterparts, before assuming her position, so give her some credit.  Unfortunately her excellent performance on Sunday has been overshadowed by media mass hysteria.  Again, it is patronising.

There's no such thing as defending honour and fragility. There's defending equality. Giving as good as you get is falling in to the trap.

So, a man being offended because of a sexist act is more sexist than the perpetrator of the act? And you're being just as patronising by assuming we are offended and not looking at the facts in a cold "right" and "wrong" way.

Being, white, am I allowed to be offended on behalf of black victims of racism?

Unless I have totally misread your post, of course!

My take on it as well. It's got nothing to do with sticking up for "poor little women", but everything to do with highlighting utter stupidity and ignorance from people who should know better, especially if they are so-called experts in the area.

I failed to add that Perry Barr Pet is correct in what she says for some people, though. It's a wide spectrum of people on HandV. It's very, very hard not to generalise. I find it nigh on impossible sometimes to write things without adding caveat after caveat.

The other thing is though, of course it's going to be mainly men commenting on this thread. What's the percentage of male to female posters on here? It's hardly an even split.

I see the female assistant referee in question is at Crewe vs Bradford tonight. Sky could send Keys and Gray to cover this match as punishment!

Wouldn't miss either of them. Anyone got any tapes of Lawro or Hansen saying something they shouldn't? That really would be a result.

Shearer saying anything controversial about anything or even offering an opinion would be a landmark day in sports broadcasting.

Can't agree more

I don't actually agree with Perry Barr Pet that women can't have it both ways. I personally think this is a rather antiquated view of feminism. Being good at a job and "being protected" is not mutually exclusive. I think we are past the days when to get on women have to behave like men. People are individuals and have different skill sets not necessarily related to gender.

I actually earn significantly more than Mr Clogger (which helps pay for Sky and season tickets) and have got there on merit and do have equality with male colleagues. I am also more than happy for him to reach things from high shelves, carry heavy things ('cos I am a bit short and wimpy) and get all macho and protective when I am being hassled by lairy blokes in pubs.

Likewise I have mates who earn less than their husbands but are a dab hand at DIY, financial planning and gardening.

All equality means is that people, of whatever gender, race, etc have the right to take whatever path they choose and not be prevented from doing so, or discriminated against solely because of their gender or race or whatever...

Several people at the WM Villa forum shouting about free speech last night which totally misses the issue.

Nice to see that the vast majority on here do see the issue.

I think they will be going now, it even looks like their employers want them out.
Both have had a very long time at Sky, earned great money doing what we'd all like to do, and maybe it will be good to freshen up the programmes.
Ken Wolstenholms(sp) they aren't!
