Van Der Vaart cost just over £8m

Adam - £8m ha ha ha, very funny

You see a lot of this on football message boards. If Player A cost X, then no way is Player B worth Y etc, etc.

You simply cannot compare the ability of footballers in this way, as many other factors come into play. How old the player is (which affects re-sale value), how long does he have left on his contract (the buying club is effectively buying him out of his contract), and whether or not the player is English, which carries a premium.

The last one causes some confusion but agents will argue that English players have no issues settling in, are proven in the PL and won't have to spend a week jetting halfway round the world just to play an international friendly every few months.

You're first point is correct, but I don't care what criteria you use, no way is Charlie Adam worth £8m.  When they get relegated and he leaves for nowt, they'll wish they sold for a decent fee.

Secondly, partly true, but even Scotland have to travel to play European and World Cup qualifiers!

I wasn't trying to argue that Adam is worth £8M, or any other figure, but simply that comparing fees is a false way of comparing the worth / value of footballers.

On the second point, yes I should have said 'British' players. The point applies to Adam as his home internationals are played up the road in Scotland whereas, say, Carlos Tevez's home games are played in Argentina

Anyone remember in the 80s blues loaning Coventry Mick ferguson- he scored the winner for them in a 1-0 win over blues and blues ended up being relegated- if anyone wants Carew they should stump up at least £1m- my guess is he will go to west ham.

Loan players can't play against their parent club these days.

The problem is if we want shot of Carew, and I think we do, it's only likely to be teams near the bottom who would take him. In any case, surely our outlook is more positive now and we should be worrying about the top half of the table.

There's the rest of Europe to farm Carew out to
Let's not be naive here

Agreed Chris, but it's still too risky to loan the likes of Albion a player like Carew in my opinion.

Our outlook may be more positive but we have three difficult league games in the next couple of weeks and we may be back in the bottom 3 then. I wouldn't let Carew anywhere near a team in the bottom half of the table. He is well capable of hitting the ground running and making a short term impact.

That's all supposing that their is interest from elsewhere and that he is willing to go. If it's not the right offer he can just stay put.

No dave, but a team with new signings and lookinG as though we have turned the corner is a more attractive proposition to some than a team battling relegation- I really feel we will finish in the top 10 and all this bollocks in the press about joining a team battling relegation will be put to bed.

Something very exciting is happening here and I see good times around the corner.

you can get 20/1 for vila to finish in top ten.. I reckon thats a good bet

Its great value. Who's that with...??

We're not having the piss taken out of us then, good. Wurzel will have an unhappy bunny on his hands though maybe. Lets move on to another target. Lets use the Adam money as a deposit to get Milner back. Or Honda from CSKA.

Wouldn't pay 8m for adam, but i guess since Bent arriving all the selling clubs have doubled their asking price when we come calling. Carew was supposedly interesting west ham, though i guess thats dead now due to MON bottling it. If he goes to WBA we should make sure we get a few clauses in - money for goals scored, staying up etc.. They'll pay it if they're that desperate

Hopefully Holloway will start his press conference sneering and taking the piss out of us as Adam walks out behind him wearing a Villa shirt, throwing his locker keys on the table in front of him.
