First game was a 2-0 victory over Shrewsbury just after xmas in 1970, it was a Christmas present along with the kit. Was just after the semi final win over Man Ure if I remember correctly.

That's quite a nice idea, getting the kit and a match ticket for Christmas.

My first Villa match was at home against Oldham 12/04/1975 when we were in Division 2. I remember going through the junior/oap turnstiles on my own (there was a separate block of turnstiles for adults) and then waiting for my Dad to come and collect me from the bottom of the steps before we made our way onto the Witton end terrace. We won 5-0 and it cost something stupid like 25p to get in and the programme cost 5p.

I remember this game well, I'd been going for 8 years by this time, but this demolition of Oldham as good as marked our return back to the big time - I remember the tremendous feeling around the place at the end of the game.  Followed of course by away games at Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday.

I saw us play Oldham 3 times that season.  Twice in the league and once up there in the cup.  We won all 3.

I'm wondering whether this home game was the one where Andy Lochhead returned as Oldham manager?  He got an outstanding ovation as he made his way to the dug out and commented afterwards on how emotional it made him feel.

It was indeed. Doug even commented on it in a column in the programme for the last home game v Sunderland.

For some sad, anorakical reason I remember that being written by Eric Woodward.

Definitely possible. That man was a visionary commercial director.

I seem to recall Sir Brian scoring a hat-trick in the 5-0 against Oldham? He scored so many goals in that second-half of the 74-75 promotion season. Who remembers the epic 2 leg semi against Chester in the League Cup?  We eventually went through to Wembley 3-2 in the Villa Park 2nd leg - again Sir Brian got the winner.

I shat myself at that game - 2-0 up and coasting then Chester equalised and looked like they would win. I was desperate, truly desperate to see Villa at Wembley (didn't get a ticket though!)

That must've been hugely disappointing Pat - in those days of course the League Cup Final was played alongside the regular league fixtures (just kicking off at 3.30pm to accommodate penalty prize as I recall).  Was it 1984 (Liverpool v Everton) when it was first put on live - although I seem to remember the 1981 replay (which we hosted) being on tv.

No the League Cup Final was not shown "live" in the 1970s, which must've annoying for some of our supporters as we got there 3 times.

For the 1971 and 1975 finals, tickets were allocated to season ticket holders and shareholders.  After that, it went by the amount of programme vouchers you had (programmes back then had a little number attached to the back page).  The only trouble was, you could buy back editions from the ground on match days.  By the time the 77 final came around, everyone had cottoned on and I was caught cold, being in about the 3rd tier down of required vouchers.  When I went to get my ticket, they had all sold out.  As a 17 year old, I wanted to fight the world and was plotting with others to take tickets from a tout on the day.  I ended up with 4 tickets and the only condition I was given was that I should not sell them over face value.  I never did, although I think that in hindsight, one of the tickets I let go went to someone who sold it on for a profit (that was me being 17 and nieve).

I remember the tickets I had (they had come from 2 separate sources) had "Birmingham City" or "Wolverhampton Wanderers" stamped on them.  The people who kindly gave them to me asked only that I did not sell them at above face value and I was only too happy to respect their wishes.

I have to say, ticket distribution is a lot fairer these days (even if it means that I won't get a sniff at an away ticket)

I've still got my programmes from these seasons with the little number on the bottom corner on the back page missing after being carefully cut out.  I remember the occasional match when a friend or two who couldn't go to the game would say "here's 7p or whatever it was, will you get me a programme - just in case !

As you say by 1977 everybody was street wise about it.

I envy you.

I had mine too until the mid 90's, when I gave them all to a mate of mine, whose son was about 8 or 9 and living, sleeping, breathing Villa.  There are so many stories on this thread (and others elsewhere on the forum) that have photos within various programmes, connected to the game in question.

I think there is the potential for several "Weir and wonderful" type of books from pictures in the programmes from the 70's and 80's.
