Merson and Dublin were the right moves. It was a lot of other golden oldies that our money was wasted on.

he is or was a good striker. never denied that.. whether we should be pursueing him at the arse end of his career when he won't be getting any better is my problem

Dublin
Merson
Friedel
Dunne
Withe

None of these were in their "age prime" when we bought them - they did not do a bad job!!

May I add McGrath

Those links don't work for me, but what are the prices being quoted?  If we could upgrade NRC for Witsel for say £3-4m that would be good business!

maybe, but merson and dublin were at least part of the reason the two managers following on from gregory didn't have two pennies to rub together.

Not exactly true. The money was there to be spent at the time.

I think this is the guy that doesn't like celebrating any goals (not that there would be much celebrating) scored by Heskey.

If the figures are correct as reported Liverpool are going to be paying the best part of 18m to Cole over 4 years.  That's a guy who's missed 2/3rds of the last 2 seasons with injury.  Decent enough player (but no more than that in my opinion) but his agent has played a blinder getting that deal, even if he never picks up an injury and plays great it's still a big risk to have put that on the table given recent history.

It's the same reason I'd want us to talk Keane down to 40-45k max and no more than a 3years deal (but with clauses to extend tied to number of appearances/goals).  Not a huge fan of Keane but he could do a job, I'd definitely cap the fee at 6m though, he's not worth any more than that and spurs want rid so they can get someone else in.  I'm not sure about witsel, haven't seen enough of him to decide but 10m seems a bit steep and he's got a rep of a bit of a kicker, not sure how I'd like him and petrov together either as I doubt there'd be many goals from them.

Final point regarding the number of goals keane would add.  3 goals this year would been enough to get us 4th, everyone knows which games they were needed in.  If Keane scored 7-8 all season but every one of them won us the game 1-0 he'd be worth the money.  People get very hung up on 20 a season but that means nothing if it includes hat-tricks against sides like blackpool and hull in games where you win 5-0 anyway.
