Final point regarding the number of goals keane would add.  3 goals this year would been enough to get us 4th, everyone knows which games they were needed in.  If Keane scored 7-8 all season but every one of them won us the game 1-0 he'd be worth the money.  People get very hung up on 20 a season but that means nothing if it includes hat-tricks against sides like blackpool and hull in games where you win 5-0 anyway.

If he did that, he'd be worth a lot more than £6m.

I agree, I was just making the point that the amount of extra goals he provides wouldn't be the value, rather when and where he scores them.

EDIT:  Darren Bent would provide the number of goals but I don't think he'd score them at the important times, certainly not in our side.  That's the real difference.

If we can get Keane for the £6 million quoted then I think that's a fair deal. Maybe a slight wage cut too.

Whilst not convinced he's still up to it at that kind of fee it would be a decent enough deal.

Kevin Phillips won the Blues quite a few points with some really crucial goals last season.

How old is he, by the way?  A lot older than Keane, so no reason to think Keane won't get 15 +  for the next 3 or 4 seasons as previously stated.

I think £6m would be a superb price.

Ok he's 29 (?).

But he will get at least 10 goals next season and will cost less than other strikers that probably won't. Zamora & Carlton Cole for example.

Said much the same thing about Bent myself when we were debating signing on here last summer.

When you score the amount of goals Bent does, most of them are important. Besides, Gabby scores important goals. I'd love Bent to make a few 1-0s and 2-1s more comfortable.

Same here.  It's not like Bent is like  Marlon Harewood, who scored nearly all his goals for us when we were 3 or 4 goals to the good.

I'm thinking that if Milner goes, we'll need a reliable penalty taker and Keane definitely falls into that category.  Assuming he can convert them and maybe turn draws into wins/losses into draws etc then £6M would represent good value, especially at £1m a place or whatever they pay.

I'm warming to the idea...

In terms of his attributes, Bent is pretty much like our present strikers, other than he's more clinical infront of goal.  In those tight games he wouldn't have the movement to create extra space or the skill to beat a player that Carew or Gabby wouldn't.  With him I think we'd win the games we win now more comfortably, but not have any greater ability to break down the bus parkers.

All accademic now anyway as he's a Sunderland player and they won't be selling him.

Exactly my opinion John.  I'm all for a goalscorer, but only if it's someone significantly different to what we have.

Tottenham scored 15 more than us last year (and had +13 in terms of goal difference) and made 4th place but that doesn't mean we need to find 15/13 goals.  There are 2 games that are hugely significant in those figures, tottenham getting 9 past wigan and us conceding 7 against chelsea.  If you put more normal results in there the actual gap is, as I mentioned, only a very small number of goals at the right times.  For Tottenham last year the player who scored those goals was pavlyuchenko when he came into the side around easter and made the difference in games where they were struggling.

Villa need that player, I don't know if Keane will be it but I'm happy to give him a shot so long as it doesn't bankrupt us.

I'm not convinced about using Keane's age as a reason not to sign him. Carew is 30 and he's still seen as a major player in our squad. Shearer was still banging them in well past that age, as was Inzaghi, Larsson, Van Nistelrooy, Raul...to name a few. I don;t think Keane is in such exalted company but to pass him up just because we're not getting him a couple of years earlier is just silly to my way of thinking.

I reckon Keane would score 15+ easy cos if Jimmy goes he will take the pens. We may lose a few from midfield tho
