Here's the article from todays Express in case anybody hasn't read it yet.

Quote from: "Express"
ASTON Villa boss Martin O’Neill is ready to open signing talks with Robbie Keane.

O’Neill is being urged to move for Spurs striker Keane by his Republic of Ireland team-mate Richard Dunne.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has not given up hope of persuading Keane to return to Parkhead after last season’s four-month loan spell, when he scored 16 goals.

But O’Neill will make his move as soon as Spurs return from their trip to America.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is on the lookout for new striking talent as he prepares to take the club into the Champions League for the first time.

He paid out £12million to bring Keane, 30, from Liverpool two seasons ago, but it is believed he is now willing to accept half that amount to get the £65,000-a-week man off his payroll

£6m? Go on then.

Yeah, he can forget that. We can afford to pay him that kind of money but we shouldn't.

Well with Harewood, Bouma and Sidwell (soon to be) off the books.

That'll be near £90-100k a week off the wage bill?

Quality, not quantity.

What's our top earner on? £54k a week?

The more I think about Keane, the more I'm warming to the idea. He's still got 2 or 3 good seasons in him.

That said (and I know many people's negative opinions of him on here), but I still maintain that Doyle would be a great signing who'd thrive with the service that we could provide him with. Not going to happen though.....

I quite like Keane, but our wage bill is huge, and although we'll have reduced it by getting rid of Harewood, Sidwell and (please god) Heskey, I'm not sure that much for a player his age is good business.

Wolves would dig their heels in and Doyle would cost us £15m and he's not worth that, when we could get Keane for £6m and we know he can deliver at this level.

I'm only guessing, but I'd have thought we'd have several players on more than that.  Milner, Downing and Heskey to name but three.

At £6m Keane would be great value and I'd be prepared to pay him something around our top earners salary.

I'd rather have Keane than Doyle, and £6 million would be ok.

A decade ago £6m was much more than it is now.  Shearer went to Newcastle for around £15m at the time, so cmparitively you'd be talking about £10m+ in today's market.

won't get him for 6m. Levy is tighter than a gnat's arse. They paid 12m plus addon payments, of which one undoubtably was CL qualification. more likely 10m or 8m plus add ons

I think who we can move out and how quickly is going to play a massive part in who we can bring in.
