I've heard that Eduardo has signed for Shaktar Donesk in a €7 million deal.  Think he could have done a good job for us and if the quoted price is true, would have been a great bit of business.

If he was the sort of player that would have made a significant difference to us I think he'd be going to a better club than Shaktar Donesk.

Have to agree with John.
It's odd that not even a Fulham or Bolton were interested in him.

The Stripeyfilth are desperatefor a striker, but showed no interest.

Keane, if he comes, will do a very good job for us. I'm sure of it.

Not sure about a significant difference but for that kind of cash I think he would have been an improvement on our (hopefully) outgoing striker.  Still quite young with a bit of pace, perhaps a better punt than a proven, but possibly past his best, Keane.

I'd be worried about how he is following the injury, which is why I think Wenger is getting rid of him.  All things considered, I think Keane is a better bet.

In fairness, though, Shaktar are hardly a nothing club, they won the UEFA cup thingymajig recently didnt they?

They also pay big money, i understand, and have a team full of Brazilians, so Eduardo may have been swayed by that.

I'm not so sure if he's the type of player who would ever really have settled in English football, though, truth be told

Got to agree about him not really settling in English football. Had my doubts before his horrific injury, never mind after it. I also could never quite envisage him in Birmingham to be honest...

Keane for me as well. He's scored a goal every 2 or 3 games for most of his career and there's no reason to suggest he's going to stop now and it would be more rational to think he will than he won't do it again next season. If he scores 15+ for the next 3 or 4 seasons in a villa shirt, no matter how much he costs, he'll be worth it.
Keane even at 10 million,  scoring 15+ goals for three or four seasons and even with no sell on value, for me, still represents better business than what has happened with the likes of Sidwell, Reo Coker,  Curtis Davies, Collymore, Balaban, etc etc.

There's more chance of us bringing Sammy Morgan out of retirement to lead our attack next season than Keane scoring 15+ goals a season for three or four years.

Fulham, Bolton or the Stripeys could never afford his wages. Shakhtar aren't exactly short of a few quid though. They probably have far more money to spend than we do right now.

Not sure why not. He's lived in Croatia for most of his adult life.

This probably helps

Shakhtar, backed by a billionaire financier, are keen to strengthen for the Champions League and would ideally like to land a world-class forward such as Manchester City's Robinho, Ajax star Luis Suarez or Oscar Cardozo of Paraguay.

But the signing of Eduardo is more achievable and could go some way to convincing captain Darijo Srna, a Chelsea target, to stay as the Croatia team-mates are friends.

Well, he's 29 now so in that 3-4 years he'll be 32 to 33.  If we sign him and he's stll here still here then, I don't think he'd be a regular starter and maybe acting as our super-sub, a bit like Berger did in his last season.  However, as his game doesn't rely on pace he'll probably still have something to offer at that age.

Honest question - how old was Merson whe we signed him?

Merson was 30 when he signed for Villa.

Merson was 30 when we signed him and a superior player to Keane, but a good point well made.

I'm not worried about Keane's age if we sign him purely because, as you say, he doesn't rely on pace and also because we have plenty of youth coming through in that position.
