Be interested to hear your thoughts on them when you get them Jon. I'm thinking it might be an idea to swap running on the streets near where I live for the country footpaths now it's getting lighter in the evenings, but will need a decent pair of trail runners if I do.

Well I got the North Face shoes a week or so ago and I have to say I'm not sold on them, I also ordered a pair of Salomon Speed Cross 4 GTXs at the same time and I really like these, the NF shoes just don't feel like they're a good fit, can't go any bigger or smaller I think it's just the construction of the of the shoe just doesn't grip my feet and feels a bit unstable. The Salomon's on the other hand fit brilliantly. That said I have thin feet and high arches so what doesn't suit me may well be a good fit for you. BTW the Salomon's in black are on a deal on Amazon now for just £71 so significantly cheaper than the NF.

Oh and I managed to stay upright on the short test I did with the poles, got a nice quiver for them and can deploy and stow on the run very smoothly.

Once you get used to the poles you’ll find them really helpful.

I was out the other day and used my Salomons for the whole day (about 25 miles) over various terrain, and I loved it. My New Balance the sole had come off. Anyway, no aches or tiredness after at all and they were fantastic all day. And a fair amount of speed in them as well. Maybe I hadn’t got used to them or something properly last time I used them.

Hope the training is going well!

Slowly ramping the miles up and trying to stick to hilly terrain, not difficult round these parts, todays 18km run was 307 metres of climb, aiming for around 100m per 10km and failing dismally to find any flat routes unless I run the Exe trail. Today was all on narrow Devon lanes, if I head to a farm trail near me the gradients are brutal 15% upward and strewn with boulders so speed marching is the order of the day. Got my vest rigged now with a quiver for the poles, no chaffing so far but distances and durations will increase the next few weeks so we'll see how that goes.

I’d go for a pair of New Balance with Vibram soles. Great straight out of the box and handle all terrain exceptionally well. And you’ll get hundreds of miles out of them. I’ve also got a pair of Salomon speed cross 5 but they’re very aggressive and I wouldn’t want to wear them for particularly long distances

Just did a search for New Balance Vibram and came up with a big variety of styles. Which ones do you use for mountain walking? I’m in the market for something lighter than my Meindl Bhutans for summer use

I’ve had a couple of pairs of the New Balance with Vibram soles. The second pair were the Hierro 5 which had more support in the heel than the first pair I had. They were a bit firmer as well which I think I preferred. Both pairs have been excellent though

I’ve managed 5 c.5k runs since my son was born on the 18th March - all brutal!

I’m after this segment before we moved to our permanent home. Getting close now.
A nasty 500 metres at 12.5% lung buster.
Fastest this year.

Seventh all time, need to find 13 seconds.

And here was me thinking Roy Chubby Brown was a bit of a fat bastard. 😜

Am back running now as rest, physio, stretching and massage has fixed the Achilles. First running FTP had me at about 4:40 per km so not lost too much fitness. First event of the season on Sunday up at Croft in Yorkshire which was going to be full on but as I’ve missed so much training will just take it easy and use it to assess where I am before the summer training programme kicks in.

Your time is good Jon but 13 secs over 500m is a lot to make up. I'm sure if anyone can do it though you can.

It is, but I forgot where the segment started and didn't really push it until 100 metres beyond the start and I eased up too early like a div!

So second best ever 5k time at Yorkshire Duathlon today 22:23 which I'm well chuffed with following 3-4 weeks out with the achilles injury. To say I was trailing behind the GB boys on their World Champs Age Group qualifying would be an understatement!!! Good weather, bit chilly and a fucker of a headwind on far too much of the bike but good day out.

Thanks JD, was really nervous having just come back from injury and not properly tested things at full pelt but after a slow start really got into it.
