we go again...Absolutely ludicrous that it's the same midfield yet again and Sanson isn't even on the bench. And no Buendia in the starting line up either. Fuck me

Crap isn't it.

I can't stand Luiz and McGinn. They might be great lads, I don't care. They haven't performed for weeks.

As for Watkins and Ings...you might aswell have a boiled potato and a broad bean up front. Useless as a pair, and not that good individually, either.

Gerrard, like Smith before him, is making a rod for his own back.

What the hell is wrong with everybody, calm down. I don't like Watkins and Ings up front anymore than others but we had 20 shots on goal last week and didn't test their keeper once. I'd have personally played the extra midfielder but let's see how it goes.

Buendia dropped is a shocker.

An alternate view is that Buendia and Coutinho together has created an imbalance elsewhere and that by dropping one of them (he cannot drop Coutinho) he could create more of a balance - but for me the problem is he’s bought the Ings/Watkins partnership back which is baffling - it doesn’t work FFS. I’d have been happy with him dropping Buendia to the bench if he had brought in Sanson to sit alongside Luiz allowing Ramsey, Coutinho, and McGinn to maraude around with one of Ings/Watkins up top.

It’s worrying we are seeing no real creativity or nous from Gerrard at the moment - stubborn, tactically unaware, both??

Watkins/Ings played together for over 30 mins of that game last week. I doubt they completed 5 passes to each other in that time. Watkins performance was a complete joke when he came on. Yet he gets rewarded with a start in a proven formation that does not work.

If things go badly today then Gerrard position starts verging towards untenable.

He's a very poor manager with no idea other than his implementation of the flying fullbacks Liverpool tribute. He sees it all an audition for his beloved club . Purlsow the fan boy will give him all that he wants unbelievable really is.
The guy losing the players here though hopefully we won't turn into Ledds utd who are a disgrace to Premier league with the way they are approaching games and then getting battered.

Reading the last 6 pages, it seems we're unanimous that playing Ings+Watkins, Luiz+McGinn, and dropping Buendia (our best player!) is an utter clusterfuck from Gerrard.
He'd better hope it pays off, as he's in for a shitstorm come fulltime otherwise.

Falling into exactly the same trap as Smith before him - Smith couldn't find a winning team without Jack, yet persevered with that formation/style of play, Gerrard is the same - His style of play worked with Nakamba to shore things up, but without Marv, those tactics are footballing suicide. We can all see it, but he's too stuck in his ways to work with what's at his disposal - SQUARE PEGS > SQUARE HOLES FFS!

There is now way they will give Gerrard the bullet so soon. Unless we suffer a calamitous drop into the bottom three he will start next season as our manager. Also the form or total lack of form from Brentford, Leeds, Everton, Burnley Watford and Norwich gives us a fair degree of breathing space.

I never want to see Luiz picked again, and am getting to the stage where I never want to see Watkins picked again. Him and Ings up front is a load of crap, and Buendia should be starting.

I feel the same way. Let's hope Gerrard has seen something at Bodymoor Heath this week to justify the selection.

We said that last week
Dougie very tired and clearly needs a rest from his exertions in the summer.
People forget that he's been involved with international affairs (no not whk he currently dating) but his playing away in summer as well as all the fame last season and this. We should be happy he's found love as must be very challenging for him during Covid times
Lest get behind him shall we!

He isn't tired, he is just shit. A poor mans Westwood who doesn't even look like he is trying half the time. Sooner he goes the better.

Luiz is not the root cause - there is a reason his form has sufferered alongside McGinns - they are not being played to their strengths. That’s why Sanson should have been the replacement for Buendia today.

It’s just really odd.  Has he truly come to the conclusion that Buendia is the problem and a horrendously out of form Watkins is the answer?

I would of probably just swamped chambers for konsa and sanson for luiz. However, if he was to drop Beundia, i could probably see the logic if he brought in Bailey, to stretch the Brighton defence. This selection is a little baffling.
I do think the people calling for Gerrards head are the people who really didnt want him in the first place. He does need a win today and a bad defeat puts him under a lot of pressure.

What the hell is wrong with everybody, calm down. I don't like Watkins and Ings up front anymore than others but we had 20 shots on goal last week and didn't test their keeper once. I'd have personally played the extra midfielder but let's see how it goes.

There is now way they will give Gerrard the bullet so soon. Unless we suffer a calamitous drop into the bottom three he will start next season as our manager. Also the form or total lack of form from Brentford, Leeds, Everton, Burnley Watford and Norwich gives us a fair degree of breathing space.

....and we've recently lost to half of those teams, so what does that tell you?

Agree well if we try and look positively chance to have integrated the youngsters yet he shipped them all out on loan
But also could be looking at developing the right blend across the from 4 and midfield combos yet he giving my mate Phil a luxury rehab back to fitness
It's the final straw for me if start bringing in Suarez in summer because Ings and Watkins haven't performed only because a really good manager works and grows what he has and develops things. All SG wants is fast track methods to success. Bemoaning the character and players

Anyway. Let's get behind them today as I really like a lot of our players so very much
The coach not so as he's draining the players

It's a weird team selection and one that if it doesn't come off will heap even more pressure on Gerrard.  So, you could call it brave...  Or stupid?!?!?

Anyway, the players need to justify their selection.  We will be chasing the ball for much of this game so when we get it we need to keep it.

Agreed.  But changing it now would be an admission of ballsing up the team selection.  The problem, or at least one problem is that we seem incapable of linking defence, midfield and attack.

The game can't sort out the total Horlicks that is Var to any satisfactory level. The anti racism strategy is token gestures and minimal fines at best.

But they can sanction players for over celebrating.   ::)

Or in the case of Matty Cash showing solidarity with a friend caught in a warzone.

Considering he's let so many things go by their lot I don't think strict adherence to the laws is his forte.

And giving a Cash a warning (at most) would have sufficed in that scenario. I don't think whoever monitors his performance is going to mark him down for that.

The law on this one is an ass and anyone who tries to justify it in this situation is an ass as well.

We started badly but have battled and that shows me they are still playing for the manager - good sign.  We do look like we don't quite know what the plan is though.  There was a passage of play at the end there when we had 3 good chances to get close to the byline and cross the ball but kept passing it back through the lines.  That looked like we didn't know what the fuck to do.  Which is a bit worrying.  Ollie Watkins needs replacing, he's suffering from a total lack of confidence and being played in a system that just doesn't suit him.

Brighton are a horrible team - niggly and dull with more than their fair share of ******.

Whatever your seeing from Ings I'm not seeing. It's like playing with 10 men.

They have both been rubbish, but Ings isn't on a yellow card at least.

Ings needs to be in the middle.. instead he’s wider right with Coutinho playing high in the center.

I don’t think Ollie has completed a forward pass yet and has lost the ball at his feet at least 3 times.

Pathetic from the ref, was obviously ukraine related.

The ref sadly had no option.

Of course he has, you take 2 seconds to confirm it was ukraine related and then show some basic humanity and leave the card in your pocket.

He's losing control of the game as well which means a red is coming soon.

Is there a law that says if you are making a political statement it's ok to take your shirt off then???????
The ref is poor agreed but here he had no option - the laws are the laws, the fact that we agree with the statement sadly doesn't affect the laws of the game

The ref can show balls and ignore the laws.

If that means losing a fee or two, it shows more balls than looking after yourself.

Nah it’s not the ref, it’s the rule.

You don't know that the ref even saw the message, he could just have seen Cash take his shirt off, and booked him.

I'm not trying to justify it, just merely point out that wether we like it or not the law is there. The yellow will not be reminded at all and `I doubt we would appeal it. There are plenty of rules we live under that we don't like, it doesn't mean that we change them  when we feel we have the moral high ground. I fully agree with Cash's comments on his shirt but am in no way surprised he was booked for it.  If the next player who scores takes his shirt off to reveal a comment about animal abuse should he be booked or not.. This is the kind of issue , who decides what is special dispensation and what is not, just insulting people saying they are an ass doesn't really help any argument. The referee is very poor indeed , has lost control and is allowing Brighton player to roll around as if they'd been shot. the replays show they were not touched . I fear there is a red coming!

but there's been plenty of people doing the same thing in games all over the place and refs haven't booked them all so it's not as simple as 'he had no choice', that's just a cop out, much like him booking Luiz.
