Well, nobody else could be bothered.
-
We won but it sounded terrible
-
We're in the hat. Let's be pleased with that.
-
Not so much 'name on the trophy' as 'name on the khazi'. We're shit.
-
It's very cold. We were woeful. But we won. That goal saved Lambert sone serious grief. I hope the bus comes siin can hardly feel better.
-
We're playing crap but not losing....I for one have to be mildly happy with that
-
We won (just).
-
goals being shown now on the red button
-
Lucky.
-
When's the draw?
-
Turgid crap. Problems still blindingly obvious. Only positive is that we're still in with a shout of the only cup that matters.
-
Class goal dragged us over the line but performance and tactics awful as always. We'll be having the same discussion next week, the week after etc etc. We are stuck in limbo and nothing will change until either more money is invested or club changes boss. Football limbo is where we are.
-
When's the draw?
Next Saturday. 0-0
-
When's the draw?
Is it sometime in the week after West Ham and Everton play?
-
Completely justified my decision to stay at home despite a) Loving Aston Villa b)being able to comfortably afford it c)having nothing else to do and d) knowing I wouldn't be able to see the game any other way.
Absolute shite, sorry to all those who made the effort to go.
Predictable response but I'll say it anyway. LambertOut. Just leave asshole
-
We are in the bag but any team would fancy they would beat us.
-
Monday evening I think.
-
Monday night's draw will inform us which team knocks us out of the cup this year. Time was we wanted to avoid The Top 4 away. Now , we welcome them putting us out of our misery humanely.
-
At least those who had "January" on their Golden Goal tickets are happy.
-
When's the draw?
Tomorrow night at 7pm.
-
When's the draw?
Next Saturday. 0-0
Very good.
-
Man Utd v Aston Villa FA Cup R4 2014-15 will be drawn tomorrow from 7.35pm on BBC1 before Ex Crazy Gang v Ex Culture Club tie.
-
Happy to win, but it just papers over the cracks
-
But Phil Dowd won't be confirmed as ref until after Fergie phones the FA.
-
When's the draw?
Is it sometime in the week after West Ham and Everton play?
Tomorrow evening at 7.33 yes 7.33.
-
that was shit (again)
-
Tekkers goal was nice, although I think the keeper should of saved it unless it took a deflection
-
Dreadful game, today's tactic out of the tombola was half hour with Westwood at sweeper!
Not a flicker on the bench when we scored...too much to hope someone had passed Lambert his crayons to write his resignation letter? Saying that there was barely any movement on the bench the whole game, are the new seats heated by any chance?
The new mentality of keeping the ball in areas that the other team doesn't want it is working beautifully, the stats will back it up....the protection of our 'nil' is working beautifully....think they've all forgotten how to attack with any vigour or cohesion, the coaching (insert own joke!) is working beautifully too.
Clark and Okore did well, Given actually took a cross outside his 6 yard box, Hutton tried hard, Cissokho is a defender not an attacking weapon....the rest went through the motions. Cracking finish by Benteke, shame he had an Ashley Young performance where he got frustrated and tried doing it all on his tod...guy needs SUPPORT and SERVICE!!
-
Today showed why Lambert is not starting games with Grealish. Has the talent, but he needs to bulk up a bit. Happy for him to come in as a sub, but he isn't ready to start yet.
-
Great goal , the rest was turgid shit .
-
Good goal. He had to make the goal himself like the one against man utd.
-
Thanks to Legion, i'm home and in the warm! And can feel my fingers!
Have to agree with LTA, Grealish was poor. That's 2 starts against lower league opposition and he has done very little in either game. And thank fuck Given still knows how to be a very good shot stopper and Fonz can't head the ball or we'd have been behind at HT.
-
You know things aren't going well when The Holte is singing "One goal, we only want one goal" late on in a game against Blackpool and mock cheering corners and anything approaching a shot. We even pretended to score.
-
Is there any point in mentioning the only positive in that we have conceded in ages?
Nah, thought not. We don't do entertainment do we?
-
Just got in and am thawing out.
I'n not quite sure how to say this, given that we have 'won' but, that was absolute, utter fucking garbage and that wanker of a manager needs to be gone ASAP.
40 mins before our first effort on goal.
60 mins before a shot on target.
Lethargic, predictable and clueless, against a team propping up the championship.
Over the next few weeks we will start slipping down the table and will soon be in our annual relegation battle, unless we change things now.
-
Is there any point in mentioning the ont positive in that we have conceded in ages?

English football is turgid right now. Playing 10 men behind the ball and committing very few forwards will give you half a chance against anyone up to and sometimes including the top 5/6. Very poor league for the past 4 years I've felt.
-
A win. A painful win. A win, nonetheless. Next round it is. It is our year, definitely.
Lots of average / poor performances indivually. Very little going forward but defence overall was competent
Westwood wss played too deep even as a sweeper. And why oh why do we still bring everyoneback for corners.

There's theory that it's easier to counter attack when everyone's back and facing goal.
-
Just got in
Another woeful display - against a team rock bottom of the championship .
What the hell was Westwood doing playing at Libero for the first 30 mins .
This bloke is completely clueless - haphazardly lurching from one mental tactic to the next.
Just go .
-

He started so deep it looked like we were playing with a back 3. Then we seemed to realise it was Blackpool we were playing and he pushed further forward.

It didn't look very turgid when I was watching 30 goals fly in on MOTD
-
Grealish proved Lambert is absolutely right to be using him from the bench, he was anonymous. It's all very well trying to play possession but it's pointless possession. There's no probing forward, just turgid sideways balls that allow the opposition to get in position, which in turn makes it difficult to create openings. We don't look like conceding but there's little threat and it won't change until we start getting the ball into dangerous positions. Benteke is utterly wasted and although the football of the last 2 years hasn't been great, at least the direct nature meant he got the ball in the final third. The new system starves him and we'll end up losing him without getting any benefit for his stay.
-
Cheer up you miserable gits. We won. :)
-
Goal is here
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30673475
-
Was I the only who kept thinking that when we did get a good attack going, that inflatable ball was going to end up on the pitch and cock it up?
*Cue jokes about an attack and making a change from a Villa player cocking it up*
-
It was a side very much lacking pace today. We've definitely got to get a couple of attacking signings in. A couple of players who can run with the ball, offer some spark and give us some pace.
-
Would anyone else be able to supply an alternate link to the goal please. This one tells me it's not available in my territory.
-
Cheer up you miserable gits. We won. :)

You're not wrong. It could have gone worse, as it often has under Lambert in the cup. Not much to be inspired about though, sadly. The lack of creativity is stifling.
-
And why the smeg were Villa fans buying half and half match scarves for sodding Blackpool? I despair!
Bizarrest sight of the day though had to be the bloke at the match with a bag from the Watford club shop.
-

Yeah, I wanted to see how Grealish and Cole looked but if we're playing just one up front and three men behind then we need someone with pace aswell so short term Gabby still probably has to be in there despite his shortcomings.
Or Bacuna. Not sure why he was back on the bench today. He's lively and can get forward.
Was Cleverley Mr Invisible again?
-
Cheer up lads, could be our last victory for a long time.
I wonder what Randy will think of the attendance today.
-
I genuinely don't get the half and half scarves. Hey ho though, if the sellers can earn some money for selling useless tat, then fair play to them.
-

Elton likes to take in an away game each season!
-
Looking on the bright side:
We won.
We scored an actual goal.
We're in the hat.
We quite clearly ruined Pat Murphy's afternoon by the sound of it.
-
I wonder what Randy will think of the attendance today.
Same as usual I suppose, better than most got. Especially considering it was the third home game in a week at a time of year when money can be tight.
-

He probably forgot it was on.
-
Just back from a cold , barren villa park. We won that is all that matters . Id rather not focus on the performance.
We go again in the 4th Rd and roll on Leicester away this Saturday

Thats more like it!
Anyhow you are right about the creativity, hopefully it underlines yet again what must be done this transfer window.
-
Attendance announced as circa 21500?
Looked more like 14000 to me
-
This football is more painful than the past few abysmal seasons.
We now have zero entertainment.
I'd say we are exactly where Randy wants us to be and that has nothing to do with the game of football its about keeping his investment safe. Frustrating, but I guess you can see why he is doing it.
No aim but staying in the league - its limbo and not really football at all, its like we have no purpose.
-
Embarrassing performance. So cold too.
Please, Lambert, just fuck off.
-

Hard to tell for sure when you're in it but seemed plenty in the Holte Lower. Lower North looked full and middle of Trinity was reasonable. No idea about the Upper Holte, Witton Lane was emptiest. 21K seemed about right to me.
-

Hmm I love to see that twat moan when we win. Soo good its like an extra goal :)

I was lower Holte and I guessed 20k at kick off.
As for the game, like people have said, turgid, laboured, etc etc etc

Knowing Lambert he'll sign a left back, another center-halve then loan in a has-been striker on the 31st.
-
One beacon of quality in a sea of utter, utter dross. Even in the cup Lambert plays for a 0-0 draw. 60 minutes to get a shot on target against the team bottom of the Championship. The calls for him to go are rightly growing
-
This group of players and the club as a whole are being shackled by Lambert and Lerners personal plans. Lerner to get out with as much £ for as little effort now as he can and Lamebert to walk away with reputation in tact and a pay off.
-
Is there any point in mentioning the only positive in that we have conceded in ages?
Yes that is worth mentioning as in the past Milwall, Bradford, Sheff Utd our defence would have lost this match.
-
Would anyone else be able to supply an alternate link to the goal please. This one tells me it's not available in my territory.
Use this little gem and the world's your oyster: https://hola.org/

Right figure. Upper Holte had more than Lower Holte.

There's theory that it's easier to counter attack when everyone's back and facing goal.

Yes, the more congested the better.
-
I put money on Blackpool, even when we win they let me down.
-
Sounded pretty horrendous, but at least we won albeit against a shambles of a side.
-
I was north lower and yes it was quite packed in there (due to £10 seats I guess)
Highlight of the day was the Holtes loud and clear rendition of "we want lambert out" on about 80 mins.
And "we only want one goal".
-
I didn't hear Lambert out. May be only heard by people who wanted to hear that😳
-
Well benteke won't have to worry about a cup winners medal. If he does go he'll be cup tied...!!
-

Thank you. Much appreciated.
-

It was sung a few times in the Holte. Each time it was getting louder. I think it was three times and the last one was pretty loud.
-
Just showed the goal at HT in the Arse game, which is good of them as I've got an early start in the morning so I don't have to stay up for MOTD now!! Hats off to all who went.
-

Hats on would be better. It was bloody cold!
-
Fuck me it was freezing. Can anyone explain Ashely Westwood the centre back?
-
Sanchez was immense again.
Jack G should learn to cross first time otherwise he will end up playing for Arsenal the way he micks about in the area.
Joe Cole did give us some subtlety and craft but his team mates were not in tune.
Okore dealt very well with that walking Eiffel Tower called Miller. He is tough guy.
What was the point of playing Given?
Foy the ref was very good and kept the game moving.
-
Given's save in the first half was excellent. I thought it was in as soon it took a deflection.
-
I didn't hear Lambert out. May be only heard by people who wanted to hear that😳
You are either deaf or weren't there then. The final rendition was very loud.
Have to say didn't see much of lambert today. Seemed sat down most of the game (probably fast asleep).
-

Thanks for thd offer but no and yes it was freezing brass monkey balls weather!
-
Given's save in the first half was excellent. I thought it was in as soon it took a deflection.
His save late in the game from Miller wasn't too shabby either . That was going in.
-
Admittedly, I only go to 7 or 8 games a season so I might have missed something, but that was the loudest Lambert Out chant I've heard so far. And it was getting louder each time until the goal went in.
-
Attendance announced as circa 21500?

That's because that is what you predicted.

Really didn't look that many. As posted by others on other threads .
-

Went on after the goal as well
"We still want Lambert out"...
-
I don't think Villa would pay tax, VAT and Blackpool's share of 7,000 tickets they didn't really sell just to make an attendance look marginally less appalling.
-
For there to be an attendance like 14K, the Holte and Lower North would be at least half empty. Like they were for Parma. And which they weren't today.
-
I didn't hear Lambert out. May be only heard by people who wanted to hear that😳

That was quiet then as I didn't hear that after the goal.
-
For there to be an attendance like 14K, the Holte and Lower North would be at least half empty. Like they were for Parma. And which they weren't today.
Fair point. I was probably focusing more on the Witton and trinity .
What was the Parma attendance ?
-
Poor stuff today. The balance still wasn't right. Cleverley and Westwood don't need to be in the same side, while we had no pace at all. Grealish looked poor and we huffed and puffed our way to what was looking like an unwelcome replay.
I hate cup games like this. None of he season ticket holders ever turn up and you get a load of weirdos turning up. You get the one gamers during normal league games, but they're normal. These early cup round types though are an unusual species.
-
Parma didn't play today.
-
I didn't hear Lambert out. May be only heard by people who wanted to hear that😳

I heard it in the upper holte.

Never announced as far as I know, if I had to guess i'd say 11-12K.

Have there been any post match comments from Chuckles?
-
I never ever hear anything from the Holte End.

Paul Lambert said Villa were deserving winners in their FA Cup third round clash with Blackpool.
Villa saw off the Tangerines 1-0 courtesy of a classy goal from talismanic striker Christian Benteke late on.
Lambert was happy with the dominance Villa enjoyed throughout the 90 minutes - and the boss said he was confident the winner was coming.
He said: "We deserved to win the game.
"You have 90 minutes to win a match of football. It wasn't relief. We had so much of the ball again and the team sitting in against us.
"It's testament to ourselves that teams are falling right back against us.
"Credit to the players, it's never easy to unlock a team.
"We had Joe Cole, Christian Benteke and Jack Grealish in there - lots of talented players to make things happen.
"You just have to be patient with it. And the goal was great.
"We had chances before that and never managed to take them. But credit to the team for keeping with it.
"Hopefully that winning goal will kick us on.
"We had a lot of the ball. You've just got to keep knocking at the door.
"We never looked in trouble as such. You've just got to keep patient and build up to get the goal.
"All credit to the team for doing it.
"The lads are adapting brilliantly to the new style of play. You ask any of them how they feel. They are playing with the ball and having a lot of domination.
"You have to remember that the last few games, teams have sat in against us really, really deep.
"But the lads looked really comfortable with the ball. The last few games we've had so much of it.
"I am more at ease with looking at it. That's not to say you're not on knife's edge at times. You always have that feeling.
"But they look really good with the way they're playing and knocking it around and being patient with the ball.
"I am at ease with watching them playing.
"It was a brilliant goal that won it. The last few games, Christian has had big chances to score.
"But he's just come back from an injury so it could take him several games to get up to full speed. But it was a great goal."
Lambert also revealed Ron Vlaar's knee injury will be further assessed this next week.

OS match report
Christian Benteke scored his first FA Cup goal to send Villa into the fourth round.
Just when a replay was looming, the Belgium international chested down a Carlos Sanchez pass and thundered home a powerful drive to break Blackpool's resolve.
The Championship strugglers had defended in depth for long periods, constantly frustrating Paul Lambert's men and prompting fears of a repeat of last year's third-round exit at the hands of Sheffield United.
But Benteke's stunning strike ensured that Villa's name will be in the fourth round draw.
Despite enjoying territorial supremacy, Villa continually found themselves thwarted by the visitors' well-organised defence in the opening half hour, with clear-cut chances at a premium.
Jores Okore met Ashley Westwood's left wing corner with a far-post volley that was much too high, while Alan Hutton felt he should have had a penalty when he was brought down as he surged into the area.
Referee Chris Foy ignored his appeal, however, and the Scotland international's frustration was summed up when he was booked for a tackle from behind on Charles Dunne.
Blackpool barely threatened during that opening 30 minutes, other than a Steve Davies shot on the turn which deflected for a corner and long-range efforts by Andrea Orlandi and former Villa striker Nathan Delfouneso.
But in the 37th minute there was a real scare when Orlandi's low angled drive forced Shay Given into his first serious save, the keeper diving to his left to tip the ball away for a corner after it took a deflection off Ciaran Clark.
After Tom Cleverley had fired over from 25 yards, Hutton's drive was blocked before it could do any danger, enabling keeper Joe Lewis to make a comfortable save.
On the stroke of half-time, though Villa produced the best move so far, Cleverley and Jack Grealish combining well to set up Benteke for a right-foot drive which crashed into the side netting.
Delfouneso was close to breaking the deadlock just after half-time, the striker controlling Jamie O'Hara's lofted pass before sending a low shot beyond the far post as Given narrowed the angle.
It was a let-off which seemed to spur Lambert's men into a more urgent approach.
Benteke's shot on the turn was charged down by a defender before Sanchez forced Lewis into an excellent save.
And the keeper did even better to tip the ball on to a post and behind for a corner when Benteke found space to unleash a powerful right-foot volley.
Villa continued to dominate, although Given had to be at his best to tip over a rising left-foot drive from Ismael Miller after the former Albion striker, on as a sub for Davies, had cut in from left.
But Villa's dominance was finally rewarded when Benteke controlled Sanchez's pass on the edge of the penalty area and sent a tremendous drive past Lewis.

Paul Lambert. The ultimate in self parody.

Have there been any post match comments from Chuckles?
I just watched his post match interview on AVTV. Very upbeat and pleased with the possession. Thought we should have scored earlier a couple of times.
Good to see him smiling and happy. Looks like the boo boys didnt get him down.
-
Lambert bemoaning sides sitting deep against us, yet for the vast majority of this season that's exactly what we've done against the opposition.
-
Sad to hear GREALISH was poor. But when I watch the highlights of the Blackpool and palace games (not to mention sunderland) he's easily the most prominent player in terms of creating chances
Keeper should definitely have got benteke's goal
I'm bored of following villa on Twitter so hats off to anyone going to the games. Jesus.
-
I didn't hear Lambert out.
You must have had mud in both your ears.
-
I cannot believe that any manager would want their team to play as slowly as we do, yet you watch us and you know that is precisely what is being asked of the players when they go out. Surely, the objective is to keep possession and move forward so you occupy the opponents defensive third and keep probing and attacking the penalty area? Or am I missing something. Maybe the new tactic is to make the opponents, crowd, those watching on TV fall asleep and then sneak a goal.
-
I wish he realised that the reason teams sit deep against us is because we lack any invention and end product and are extremely low on confidence in putting the ball in the net.
They don't sit deep because they are scared of us like we have done for the last 2 years!
-
Let's hope we can go on a cup run now.
-
Lambert bemoaning sides sitting deep against us, yet for the vast majority of this season that's exactly what we've done against the opposition.
Yes and after which he says "I couldn't see them hurting us. I don't care about possession. They didn't create many chances". It's very odd what he's doing. If this was season 1 id be much happier - I want to see us keep the ball. But it's very late for that and I'm concerned he doesn't see the problems we all see
-
The bit that gets me is:
"You have 90 minutes to win a match of football. It wasn't relief. We had so much of the ball again and the team sitting in against us."
After 2 1/2 years of saying he doesn't care about stats now one is in our favour he's making sure it gets mentioned often enough.
-
On the radio I thought it could have been Blackpool fans chanting Oyston out?
But no real surprise if Lambert out chants have started.
-
They did and were getting gradually more vocal until we scored.
-
I didn't hear Lambert out.
You must have had mud in both your ears.
No just a thick woollen hat💂

Well said Darren that is also my hope.

Highlight of the game for me was the mock celebration when Sanchez hit a tame shot comfortably collected by the keeper, very funny and obviously aimed at Lambert. This seemed to spark the increasingly loud chants of 'Lambert out ' and 'we want our Villa back'. The goal saved him from real stick, but did not hide the fact that we haven't a clue and must be so easy to play against.Saying all that he ain't going anywhere,if we'd lost this and followed that up with relegation I still think he will avoid the sack,so take the win and hope for a miracle!
-
Oyston's out was sung loud and clear by Blackpool fans.
-
Those of you who like Lambert deserve each other.

Jesus.
I think if the keeper had got his hands in the way he'd have lost them :)
There was heck of a lot of power in the shot. From where I was sat today it looked as if there was.
-
Those of you who like Lambert deserve each other.
There's no need for that is there.
-
Just back, really disappointing performance today against a poor Blackpool team. Oh we'll in the next round I suppose
-
Looking on the bright side:
We quite clearly ruined Pat Murphy's afternoon by the sound of it.
Hmm I love to see that twat moan when we win. Soo good its like an extra goal :)

Utter, utter shit. Lambert couldn't get this lot look threatening if he gave them all a flick knife. One piece of Benteke brilliance gets us out of jail, but don't be fooled. We are awful.
-
Those of you who like Lambert deserve each other.
what both of them ?
-
I didn't hear Lambert out. May be only heard by people who wanted to hear that😳
It was sung a few times in the Holte. Each time it was getting louder. I think it was three times and the last one was pretty loud.
I could hear it clearly from the Upper Witton, match highlight until Benteke scored
-
Dull, predictable shite. A slightly better team than Blackpool would have knocked us out. I've no idea what the logic of playing Westwood in a back three for the first 30 minutes was, baffling!
Grealish showed why he is not ready to start, too lightweight / casual.
We really need to get rid of Lambert, but it ain't gonna happen.
-
Those of you who like Lambert deserve each other.
what both of them ?
He's lacking assistant and coach...
-
Went today cause I won't be able to go for a while, and thought it couldn't be as bad as the Sunderland game. Actually it was pretty similar, I imagine that crystal palace wasn't too different either.
Up until bentekes goal, I think that blackpool had as many chances as us, despite being an obviously limited team. They had a few moments and half chances, and that's all we managed to create. So having the lions share of possession isn't really helping us in terms of either creating or stopping other teams.
Joe cole played well, I thought, and once he was closer to benteke looked like he might create someone. He was my man of the match, also I thought Clark and okore were fine and Sanchez did well, mostly for trying to inject some energy into the team. I think Clark looked really composed without being overconfident, seeing him play well is a positive.
Not a fan of cleverly - for me Westwood is neat and tidy in the middle and cleverly offers nothing different - no real quality on the ball, no really movement to drag defenders around. I'd drop cleverly and leave Westwood in the team, but I see what people mean about the lack of balance, or rather overly defensive and not creative midfield.
Grealish struggled once they started getting tight to him and forcing him backwards, someone said on here that he needs to learn to use his body to protect the ball and that's true, he's way too upright. He should watch joe cole (mostly) keeping the ball in tight spaces, but I like his style and it's good to see him start.
The full backs are the only players who add any kind of depth to our play, but cissokho is very limited going forward. We are crying out for genuine width in front of them.
Benteke had a very poor game for about the first hour, then woke up and played ok. You can see he is frustrated, I think we'd get the best out of him with weimann up front, who makes a lot of runs in behind, or joe cole off him, who moves well and creates space.
Seeing a couple of games live has really brought it home just how toothLess we are - blackpool must've looked at our last few games and thought 'well just keep our shape and they won't break us down' and they were almost right. For me our players aren't that bad, rather the team is set up in a very negative way.
Depressing to hear the holte end cheer a shot on target, though fair play to them for trying to liven things up in the second half. For the poster who didn't hear the lambert our chant, where were you? I was in the witton lane p3 and it got louder each time, by the third time it sounded like the majority and was it me or were there also boos at the end?
Bit gutted that that's it for me at villa park this season, but on the other hand I hadn't seen us win live since west ham when gabby scored, and last season just saw my teams lose and draw. So really 2015 has started off all right!

If its celebrations when we lose and misery when we win like Pat Murphy that you want but with a local flavour then try Radio WM!
Hard working local sports journalists exposing the evil schemes of Paul Lambert, week after week! He would have gotten away with it too if it wasn't for those damn kids! As a bonus just like Pat you can follow them record the glorious rise of the pride of the midlands West Brom!
-
I feel a bit punch drunk and fuzzy headed after 3 trips to villa park in a week . I have though come up with a positive .
We've been largely rubbish in all 3 games yet we are unbeaten and haven't conceded a solitary goal. Dull I know but it's surely something to build on.
Leicester will obviously be a sterner test .
-
When the Blackpool fans started singing 'Tangerines' I was just waiting for us to start chanting for Satsumas in response.
-
Job done. Five more one-nils and we've won the cup.
Piece of piss.

I'm a little concerned what will happen if one goes to penalties - surely that will freak the players out?

Thanks for the suggestion that I go follow West Brom, I'd give you a proper answer but those damn kids might be reading.... :-)
As for the actual discussion not the snidey comments....I expect the local press to challenge our clubs and their managers when they are doing badly....to reflect the various opinions of the fanbase...not just cozy up in the hope of an extra bacon sandwich at press confs or a bland exclusive interview to fill a page or two. Have you read one word of genuine questioning from the Mail or heard one word of sense from WM?

Lambert set up a team to avoid defeat, against the side rock bottom of The Championship.
Pathetic. Utterly pathetic.

Those of you who like Lambert deserve each other.

If you don't like him, don't go. It's counter productive to turn up and boo. I get the impression some are hoping for us to do badly so they can moan. Well stay away. Ultimately we all want the Villa to do well don't we?
-
He's been on skysports news talking shit about creating chances in each of the last few games. Then reporters asked him if the chanting hurt him and he said 'no doesn't bother him been happening all his career but it doesn't help the players'
-
Unconditional backing didn't help the players either! Complete nonsense that booing affects the players, are they really that weak? for me this lot & their leader have got of very lightly.
-
Didn't go today but to be honest all that matters is that we're in the next round.

Agree and hoping benteke will have taken some confidence from his goal and take that up the M69 on Saturday

I did and it doesn't.
Frankly, it was bloody disgraceful.

Playing one striker against a shite league 1 club at home. Expecting full backs to perform as wingers. Playing tom not very cleverly and nzog. Almost 6 hrs without scoring. It's a mess
-
Didn't go today but to be honest all that matters is that we're in the next round.
I did and it doesn't.
Frankly, it was bloody disgraceful.
It was shit today. But the single most important thing is being in the next round. I'd much rather have today's performance and result than to have played an absolute blinder and lost.
That said, playing well does somewhat increase the chances of winning.
-
Admittedly, I only go to 7 or 8 games a season so I might have missed something, but that was the loudest Lambert Out chant I've heard so far. And it was getting louder each time until the goal went in.
The loudest Lambert out chant was at Burnley. Three parts of our away end were chanting it!
Lambert didn't acknowledge the away fans when he walked past, unsurprisingly.
-
Didn't see the game today so I am unsure exactly how it panned out, however I can see the logic in westwood dropping into a back three as theoretically it allows the fullbacks to push further forward and also adds a decent passer to the defence. Liverpool used the tactic well with Gerrard last season.
The team selected today had little natural width (cole and grealish are not really wingers) so it was important the full backs could push forward knowing that they were covered defensively.

Don't get me wrong, I am of an age where winning the FA cup is the last remaining thing I want to win before I kark it.
To me and many others it is still the holy grail.
BUT, there is no way on gods earth this is team is good enough to win the FA cup.
Lambert was 2 or 3 minutes away from being strung up, but has been given (yet) another stay of execution by Benteke.
I am not naive enough to think that an 88th minute goal in an otherwise sea of shite, makes everything ok.
All I know is that the bloke is stangling the life out of the team and needs to be gone.

Never said it didn't, though I suspect our record over the last few seasons might not support the home fortress theory!
In a time when you are giving your fans very little to cheer support has to be earned a little & if some want to boo or chant for his job they have every right.
-
That was fucking awful, just so slow and allowing them to get men back behind the ball every single time, Lambert never seems to learn and needs to be sacked asap.
Westwood as a centre back?
Only bright spots where Okore, again, Sanchez, again, Cole and the goal. Everything else was abysmal.

Why would it bother the players and not him? They're not his children who get all tearfull when daddy Paul gets a kick up the arse by the only people who still have standards at the club. Boy does that man talk some bollocks.

Not what I meant. No I meant reading them record West Broms rise and our decline which is what they really want to see. Certainly not implying you should go support another team just because you disagree with me, if it came across that way I apologize.
-
My lad came with me today for the first time in about 2 years.
He's not really into football at all but loves me and The Villa enough to tolerate my strange obsession.
His very non-expert comments during the game were interesting:
"They're not very confident are they?"
"You know when they get into really good positions? Why do they keep passing it backwards?"
"Why don't they run towards the goal and have a shot now and then?"
Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings....
He's 30, btw!

There's no need for that is there.
Admittedly I've been sailing the good ship Caledonia Best for most of the afternoon, so the aul judgement could be even more impaired than usual (and that's going some). But I took that to be a flippant end of the pier remark. Take my Mother-in-Law. Please.

Thank McGrath for that...I look crap in stripes :-)
I don't think there is a vendetta or favouritism shown, I just think the clubs aren't challenged at what they are doing / not doing - look at the BLose reporting, do any of the local media do their own research or just take sound bites from a website? They should be over that like a rash. Pat Murphy has a beef with Lerner never speaking to the media, others do with Peace at Tesco likewise. Just seems there is no opinion anymore and the media are little more than extensions of the club comms depts!

Well I am 58 so much older, you two might see us win an 8th F A Cup, I am hoping to live a good while longer but I do wonder whether I will see it happen.
-
Aye, no worries! I do think Murphy has had it in for us since Mon left to be honest, its not just a Lambert thing. Its why I have it in for him :)
So while I would like there to be a smart / critical reporter out there, I find the likes of Murphy approach it in a very insincere and petty manner. I don't think he wants us to get better regardless of Lambert, I think he wants us to fail.
-

Agree - cissokho isn't good enough on the ball to hold it high up the pitch/ do anything really apart from pass to the man in front of him. How many times does he cross into the first man?
Also Westwood dropping into a back 3 and pushing the full backs on is fine, but he doesn't need to play as a centre back to do that - Gerrard didn't. One of he or Sanchez could do that from midfield, the problem with this is that, as has been pointed out, our movement from midfield and deep full backs/lack of attacking width means we don't capitalize on any space created anyway.
A few times in the last few games someone (usually Sanchez) has played a cross field ball to Hutton or cissokho, but they can only pass backwards and the defensive net just shifts across the pitch.
For me the big problem in the first half hour til Westwood moved forward was cleverley - I don't see what he contributes
-
When's the DVD out?
Some of Lambert's comments post match come across as arrogant. He knows he is untouchable and clearly does not even contemplate the notion that fans might be unhappy with the job he is doing. There's an interview with Westwood where he harps on about the new style of play as well. It's absolutely bizarre to find professional sportsmen lauding themselves for doing the most basic element of their sport (passing to someone in the same shirt) well without any apparent notion of how ineffectual it all is.
The most worrying aspect of Lambert's comments are his assertions about other teams sitting deep against us and making it difficult. For starters, teams who knew how to keep possession effectively would work out how to break these teams down. But secondly, I think he is of the belief that better teams won't sit deep and we will pass them to death, which is complete bollocks of course. Better teams will hound and press us and given that the player on the ball very rarely has any mobile options to play too, we will just constantly lose the ball and be back to square one.
If he came out and said that we are keeping the ball better but we need to start moving it quicker at the right moments and playing between the lines more readily then fine, we could see that he has identified what we need to work on. However he and some of the players genuinely seem to be of the belief that just having the ball for large chunks of time constitutes a good side showing effective attacking strategies.
It was obvious what was needed again today. Width. The one time we had a player break wide and forward in the first half, space was freed up inside and Grealish played in Benteke. Sanchez made a couple of bursts down the right in the 2nd half and it bought about chances, corners and genuine pressure. It's so screamingly obvious yet a man paid millions to run the team plods along insulting the intelligence of everyone else watching the match. I have had enough of him now, the Westwood sweeper move is just another example of him trying to pin the tail on the donkey.
-
Thought Westwood played well today and was my MOTM
It's good he's back for Leicester
-
Some observations
1)From the Family area I could hear the Lambert out chants , it started with the Holte but there was some from the North Stand too
2)Cleverly ..pointless.With all players available and playing a midfield 3 its Delph Westwood and Sanchez , it our situation there is no way she should be considering him at anything over 4 mil to be aback up player to those 3.
3)Lambert for the love of god your fullbacks are not creative enough to be left to provide the attacking threat from wide area's.This is our patten of play pass sideways ball reaches full back , nothing ahead of him so checks back pass's inside this continues back to the opposite fullback. He has nothing in front so check back and pass's inside/Lambert talks about possession well any half decent bunch of players can pass sideways whilst the other team sits back and lets them
4)Benteke , mostly isolated. There was one moment in particular in the first half that summed up our attacking threat. We broke quite quicky for once Benteke and Grealish were the only 2 players in the box both surrounded by Blackpool players , Benteke was wide and lost the ball.No other players were supporting.
5)Grealish , still a little lightweight and needs to release the ball quicker at times but is worth persevering with in a wide position over Weimann for me.The problem he has alongside Cissoko and Hutton is the ball out to them comes so late they are all faced with 2 men to beat.We don't move the ball quick enough out wide and into space.
6)Sanchez ,MOTM for me is literally the only player in midfield who injects pace into our play.He is everywhere on the pitch and makes good runs off the ball to create space.
Overall is was a woeful performance , which comes on the back of 3 goalless games in the league. As an attacking threat we are hopeless and as well as the defence are playing they can't keep a clean sheet every game.Possession means nothing if you are not able to hurt the opposition .61mins until the keeper made a save it's not good enough.

I've been mulling over his tactics since I got home. I think the possession game we play I'm theory is a good game plan.
Westwood suits the strategy but doesn't need to pay as a centre back to bring the ball forwards. He coud play a deep lying play maker and interchange with Sanchez.
The problem is definitely Cleverley. He offers nothing.
I'd stick with Cole, on the basis we can keep him fit and would love to see us get a foil for Benteke IE a playmaker or a support striker. When Benteke gets doubled up by markers we can't brake teams down at all.

Sometimes I'd like to see some of them have the attitude of 'gonna ram those boos down your throat' than do as Lambert as done and use it is an excuse. Probably never happen but it would be nice to have a team of leaders...perhaps we have to go pink & fluffy with the modern day player :-)
-
What we lack is width and movement . It's great having a Sanchez and a Westwood in control on the ball but we need a forward outlet .
Watch Rooney when he plays the Westwood role or Stevie Mee. They play raking 40 yarders to wide men on the move who then stretch the play and allow further space and movement inside .
-
The player I feel most sorry for in this dreadful state of affairs is Benteke, and I fear he may be off this January. When you're hardly getting a sight of goal all game due to the ineptitude of the manager and the players behind you (bar Sanchez, Grealish and occasionally Delph), its no surprise that sometimes he misses chances he'd normally score if we were keeping him busy and sharp! It must be incredibly frustrating, particularly if we're playing a team we should beat, seeing the ball continually moved across the back four and deep midfield without any penetration. The amount of times you see him peel off the shoulder of a CB calling for a through-ball before never being given it is just ridiculous. It's also no surprise that towards the end of these turgid matches he ends up showing his frustration, throwing his arms up etc - he's just replicating what we're all doing in the stands!!

That's amazing two Villa fans 43 years old! If you both live till 2057 and at 86 years of age please travel to Wembley together to see us lift the cup.
-
I hope we're not gonna be last on MOTD again. I've got work tomorrow.
-
Take a day off tomorrow. There will be nothing going on and you deserve it!
-
Well we won.
It was cold and dull. I went to Palace as well and can't believe how drab it was. There was no pace, movement or tempo to either game. We'd get a break in a good position a few times but the final pass or movement leading to a ball being played in is just not there. Three passes later its usually back at the centre-halves feet as we start again with a bit of urgency before the 5th sideways pass slows everything down. He's a willing trier is Cissokho but neither he or Hutton have the ability to play the attacking wing-bacl position well enough to make this system work. If we had a willing capable full-back who can do the overlaps and get behind defences and create either a chance, score, or at least stretch or cause some panic in the opposing defence.
As it is its seems to be a confused team not really knowing what they're doing. Yes we've got a change of system but all that is is us keeping the bloody thing. We've proved we can do that but not brilliantly well and have it usually where we can't hurt teams. But the players always look lost in the last third. \surely they don't have to be coached to the degree that a bit of movement and a higher tempo is totally alien to them?
You have to look at how we're being set up and how we're appraoching the game. The manager is totally at fault here and changing something that was rubbish but at least showed a smidgeon of attacking intent to one that really seems to devoid of any attacking know how and with a lack of craft or guile.
Lambert really has panicked and I don't think he really knows what he's doing or how to improve things. He and we are at a point in time where we're both just hoping for wins. Expecting them, even against a poor and desperately poor Palace and Blackpool, is something we, and I suspect he, no longer do. For that he has to go. Even after the goal I have to say that the Lambert out chants we a joy to my ear. They were louder today also. The tide of support that Lambert maintained for a good while is starting to become a more vocal current going the other way. It won't take long for things to be different in the terraces if the side doesn't start winning games a little more regularly and play better than this. The atmosphere today and Palace to a degree, has felt different. You can sense around you that people have had enough.
Whatever you think/thought of Lambert it just felt like evryone has had enough of this. I've just watched his poet-match interview on MOTD..."we played well"
I mean. Seriously. Even the pundits started talking about us the way that many of us see it now. We're bloody awful.
That aside...I took my 5 year-old to both games and he thoroughly loved both of them. Came home sing Holte-Enders in the sky. Ahhh, I see it as job done but I'm not resting on my laurels.

Unconditional backing didn't help the players either! Complete nonsense that booing affects the players, are they really that weak? for me this lot & their leader have got of very lightly.
Why do you think teams have better home records than away ones if home support means nothing?
Never said it didn't, though I suspect our record over the last few seasons might not support the home fortress theory!
In a time when you are giving your fans very little to cheer support has to be earned a little & if some want to boo or chant for his job they have every right.
Without wishing to turn this in to a " who has a right to boo" discussion, booing will detract from the teams performance then make them play worse. So booing and moaning the team play badly is a self fulfilling prophesy.
Sometimes I'd like to see some of them have the attitude of 'gonna ram those boos down your throat' than do as Lambert as done and use it is an excuse. Probably never happen but it would be nice to have a team of leaders...perhaps we have to go pink & fluffy with the modern day player :-)
I'm more inclined to symapthise with the no booing school but sometimes its worth risking the obvious negatives to hopefully get a better outcome for the team.

Think so.
They sang "boring boring villa" towards the end of the palace game .
-
If we are losing at Leicester in pathetic sideways fashion I think it will be messy for lambert as there's a big away group attending (3300)
-
Bizarrest sight of the day though had to be the bloke at the match with a bag from the Watford club shop.
Probably a groundhopper who had lost his Tesco Bag For Life.
-
What we lack is width and movement . It's great having a Sanchez and a Westwood in control on the ball but we need a forward outlet .
Watch Rooney when he plays the Westwood role or Stevie Mee. They play raking 40 yarders to wide men on the move who then stretch the play and allow further space and movement inside .
I think having both of them in midfield unbalances it as they both do the same job. When you add in Cleverley's minimal contribution, it isn't hard to see that we are going to struggle to create anything from midfield.
-
3)Lambert for the love of god your fullbacks are not creative enough to be left to provide the attacking threat from wide area's.This is our patten of play pass sideways ball reaches full back , nothing ahead of him so checks back pass's inside this continues back to the opposite fullback. He has nothing in front so check back and pass's inside/Lambrt talks about possession well any half decent bunch of players can pass sideways whilst the other team sits back and lets them
Totally agree, yet he lets it continue for 65 minutes before even contemplating a change. I'd prefer the old tactic of getting it up to Benteke and go from there over that garbage.
-
I have just been reading on several sites that Lambert was surprised at the calls for him to go,as we were having more of the ball and playing well. God, he is a bigger idiot than i thought !Two goals in five games, three wins out of the last seventeen games and he says he is surprised we are not happy.
-
Another clean sheet ..... Wahey
Playing two holding midfielders in Westwood and Sanchez hardly makes sense against the likes of Blackpool. The same for playing defensive full backs if they are the ones supposed to be providing the width. Disappointing to hear that Grealish made little impact. Cole will come back in for Leicester.
Implementing a new style of play does take time but Lambert maybe only starting to figure out that the personnel we have aren't suited to it.
Formation wise he still seems unsure if we wants three flat midfielders/ 2 holding and 1 further forward/1 sitting and 2 further forward. Trying to get more out of Benteke seems to have flummoxed him aswell. Hopefully Cole can provide some imagination against Leicester.
-
I'm sure I've read somewhere that when playing for Belgium Benteke likes the "no 10" role playing off the centre forward. Given that we have no creativity, no wingers to cross for him we could try that with Weimann up front playing in his best position, or Robinson.

I can't see why it's one way or the other. Why can't we mix it up a bit? We now seem to never want to play a long early ball.
-
I didn't go yesterday so I don't know how good, bad or cold it was. My cousin went and said it was ok but all the fannying around against a mediocre championship side got on people's nerves. Getting though was the main thing I suppose, but three shots on target at home over 90 minutes against a team bottom of the championship dosen't read very well.
-
There was a lot of ball retention. Plenty of passing to the left and right.
-
There was a lot of ball retention. Plenty of passing to the left and right.
Ball retention in your own half makes the stats look better, but is unlikely to create many goal scoring opportunities, as we have no one with vision in midfield or the technical abiity to make 40 yard accurate passes going forward, plus when we do move forward it's far too slow and predictable as there will be a packed defence we are unable to break down.
-
As I never tire of saying the idea of football (when it was invented by god knows who) is to get a round piece of leather into your opponents
goal more often than they can get it into your's. If you keep passing it sideways ( a la Ray Wilkins) or backwards just to keep possession you
are not going to achieve the objective of the game are you Mr Lambert?
Most of all it is boring to watch.

I made that very point . I think Westwood is capable of making Rooney like 40 yard balls but we need players to make the runs down the wings.

I like the sound of that. Weimann, preferably.

We might get Aaron Lennon for between 5-7 mil. He will do for a couple of seasons or Rosicky who still looks capable, to create chances for Benteke and......there isn't anybody!
-
Me too. However, given how nobody else scores for us (and that Weimann and Gabby panic like priests in a lingerie section when they get near the goal), I can't help but feel that keeping Benteke as close to goal as possible is the best option at the moment.

I honestly can't recall Lennon in a game in the last 3-4 years. I've never been a big fan. Much like Zogbia he had 1-2 periods of looking very good, but most of the time he's been inconsistent. End product has always been a big issue with him.
He'd probably improve us to be fair, if he stays fit, and I would hope we could snag him for less than 5 million. That said we need to look for better.

Is it 2012?

Not sure about Lennon. Always have the impression he wouldn't "travel" well outside of London, may be wrong.
Either way I don't see it happening.

He's from Leeds. He runs like a girl.

He does. He'd give us width though and that's something we sadly lack.
-
I'd be wary of anyone who wears gloves from mid September onwards
-
Lennon has been linked with a move to Sunderland - I doubt he would be on Lambert's radar - he is a winger after all.
-
I'd hope he's not on our list, a winger who can't cross the road isn't what we need, if he wasn't so quick he'd never have made it as a premier league player.

Ron I am getting evermore concerned about Lambert's philosophy as a Coach. I thought he was better than he is. When he comes out with comments like "we have changed our style" I think about Shankly, Clough, Paisley, Saunders and other great coaches saying anything stupid like that. I always had a view that better coaches know what they are going to do and get a team together to do it. Everyone knows the way to score is to get the ball into opposition box as quickly as possible. OK easier said than done but that's where a Manager justifies his existence by having a plan and executing it. The big question does he have a style of play and evidence is he has not so therefore he is in a job that is too big for him.

Media staring to crank it up a bit? From the guardian:
14) Lambert risks the wrath of a forgiving Villa faithful
The discrepancy between Paul Lambert’s press conference assessment and the FA Cup tie witnessed at Villa Park yesterday left the attendant media somewhat bemused. The Holte End had just turned on the Aston Villa manager for the first time in his tenure, three minutes before Christian Benteke’s winning goal broke Blackpool’s resistance. Lambert said he found their vehemence “strange”. With 12 goals from 22 games this season, and three wins from the last 17, it is stranger that Villa fans have remained supportive of Lambert. In these days of short-term reigns and so little loyalty, strange but laudable. It is as if, with Randy Lerner hitting stony ground thus far in his attempt to sell up, the Villa crowd have become accustomed to mediocrity.
After the relatively heady days of three successive top-six finishes and two Wembley visits under Martin O’Neill, Villa fans never bought into Gérard Houllier. They positively howled at the moon until delivered with Alex McLeish’s head on a plate. Yet after finishing 15th in the Premier League in each of the past two seasons, with one run to the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup (where they lost to Bradford City from League Two), and now facing a third successive campaign endeavouring to keep their heads above the relegation parapet, Lambert has received very little grief from the crowd.
Benteke was a superb signing, even if he has flattered to deceive in the past 18 months, and the likes of Ashley Westwood and Fabian Delph have developed into good Premier League midfield players. The players work hard for him and are now trying to adapt to a preferred passing game, but still lack touch and movement. Lambert is deluded if he thinks maintaining harmless possession in recent games against Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Blackpool equals progress. Lambert has been fortunate to avoid too much criticism thus far. But if he continues to praise Villa’s performances every week, not distinguishing between the good and the bad games, then he risks alienating supporters further. In these dour, difficult days for Villa he needs to keep a forgiving fan base onside. Peter Lansley

Just because it is the first time the media have heard us complain doesn't mean we have been happy for over a year!
Sign a wide-player and a play-maker (a year late) and then let's see...
-
Singing lambert out at burnley away will go unnoticed but when the Holte all sing it in unison it gets noticed as it was on MOTD and now in the nationals .
He's running out of time and his post match remarks are now being scrutinised .

I think it is because the media have picked up on how shite our "new way" actually is - the stats are there for all to see - he has had it easy with all that "young and hungry" blx they bought into
-
You only have to look at his demeanour in the press room and on the touchline to see that he's under no pressure from our weak owner and even weaker CEO. Plus the likes for Charlie Nicholas and Alan McInally keep banging the drum of, "he's doing fine, he just has no backing".
Businesses that don't accept the reality of their situation invariably go to the wall. in the same way, football clubs in denial over poor results and form invariably end up sliding through the trap door.
-
There is something ironic in that if it had been a league game, there probably wouldn't have been any Lambert out chants, just stoney silence.
There were none of the season ticket holder regulars by me, yet the people that had turned up for the day all joined in the song. Cheeky bastards! You need at least a full blown season of watching us flounder before you can complain!
-
I don't know , for those of us who had done all 3 parts of the Christmas Nilogy , it was very much tipping point yesterday .
It just boiled over and it had to after 80 mins of hapless sideways passing against Blackpool .
-
The "harmless possession" quote in the Guardian is spot on. Possession without purpose is how I have termed it as I like alliteration.

A new contract in the summer demonstrated that he is under no pressure from above. Mid table plodding is enough to keep Lerner happy for now and that is what is being delivered.

Paul's purple patch producing purposeless possession.
-
We look like we're defending a goal the way we play. We take the sting of matters and keep the opposition at arms length, the major problem being its 0-0 at the time.
-
That's a good article and sums the situation up extremely well.
It's good to know that there are some proper journalists out there who display insight and perceptive analysis of our team/club rather than short, sharp, sensational soundbites that mean little or nothing.
bit of alliteration in there for you joe!

Preposterously pointless passing
-
The passing isn't pointless at all. We look even less like conceding a goal now than we did at the start of the season when we were defending well. Which is the point.
This is football played under fear and the fear of being relegated is all that motivates 12 clubs in this league.

win, clean sheet, next
Whilst that is true and the win was the most important thing, if our manager chooses to ignore the nature of the win then we're doomed to failure.

We could draw our way to 38 points a season... would that be acceptable??

Thanks for posting HWV

The performance was insipid and dull, we were bereft of ideas of didn't look like scoring until we did.
That said i can't understand the fans who go to a game like this, sit in silence for 80 minutes and then belt out "we want lambert out" like they were marching to war.
There was a quality section of around 50 lads in L7 for the game who got behind the team for 90 minutes despite everything. Plenty of people in the group think Lambert should go but booing the team at half time and chanting for his head druing the game isn't the way to go about voicing those concerns. I doubt i'd still be following the villa if i went for the football because it's fucking tedious stuff, i go to have a good day out with mates and to back the team till i can no longer speak. The last three games against Sunderland, Palace and Blackpool have been mind numbing affairs but i've had a quality time because the sections in L8 and L7 have been bouncing, if there is one positive to take from the game against Blackpool is that we had a section of fans who sang for 90 minutes solid, if we were to replicate that on a bigger scale, even involving 1/5 of the Holte then Villa Park would be an intimidating place for visiting teams to come and might make some small difference to the confidence and mentality of the team.
-
I think that most of us go to the game wanting to get involved, to get behind the team and support them but they don't half make it hard. There are plenty of tales of old managers on a visit to a certain ground saying to their players 'lets keep this crowd quiet for the first half an hour and they might then turn on their own team', its almost like PL says the same thing at frigging home games.
-

I agree that it's depressing stuff on the pitch and if you focus on it it's hardly going to inspire you to get behind the team, i actually think there's more inspiration to be had from the fans standing around you than on the pitch. Now if all the fans around you are mutes who wait for the boos to start to make a squeek then obviously that isn't going to help much either. However if you're surrounded by 15 - 20+ people who are going to sing all game then that too becomes infectious and that's the only thing for me that gives me any enjoyment at the Villa at present.
-
I've every respect for the lads who make up whats left of the atmosphere but I've done my singing over the years and now I want to be entertained by the football, I'd stay in the pub if I just wanted a chat and a sing song, although if it wasn't for the pre and post match entertainment I'd knock it on the head completely.
-
What was the song they were singing repeatedly? I couldn't make it out?

I agree, booing during the match or at half time strikes me as a bit pointless, and i totally understand why you go to the match - one of my most enjoyable seasons going home and most aways was the 87-8 second division year, and that wasn't because we played brilliant football, it was because we had a series of really great days out, both home and away (and away meant getting pissed in a lot of places I'd never been pissed in before - and haven't since, in many cases).
However, just as you go for the social side of it as well as the football, there will be a lot of people who go mainly for the football, and will therefore be judging the match on totally different criteria to you.
People in the Upper Trinity, for example, or older people wherever they sit, don't go to shout themselves hoarse or bounce up and down for 90 minutes, so they are clearly going to be judging things on a slightly different basis to most people in the Upper Holte.
I just think it is dodgy territory when anyone (whatever the argument) starts to find fault with what others get out of the matches, or how they act, when really, we're not all going there for the same thing.
If I thought we merited it, I'd boo at full time, too. But I wouldn't boo during the match, and I wouldn't throw insults at the manager, either. However, at matches before, I have seen people doing both those things.
I just put it down to them having a different experience to me, and that people will react differently to poor performances.

Come May we will be acknowledging this win as a master stroke of a tactical genius.

Apart from the win and clean sheet, the only positives were not picking up any more injuries or suspensions.
Clark and Okore in particular.

-
paulie!
I sit - rarely - on the back row of the Trinity Middle - I'm not blocking anyone's view so the stewards are often prepared to turn a blind eye - and DO usually shout myself hoarse, get pretty irate like a number of those around me, and am a bit of a pain to my lovable, patient stewards. Some of our clashes with away twats in the boxes just behind us have become a significant feature of some games v ManU, Arse etc.
But, I know exactly what you mean.
A fair majority of those around me are very passive and tend to be less passionate in their behaviour. The looks on their faces, however, tell a different story. I never leave before the end of a game, for instance, but many of them do. They look soaked in a marinade of dull inevitability.
I would never boo the team myself - wherever I sat/stood - and those around me rarely do either. I just don't think it helps achieve anything at the time.
An organised protest after the game, or at some other appropriate date/time to create maximum effect, would get my full support. I'd be there, depending upon its purpose.
The mood created by the vociferous, ebullient Holte-Enders can be very infectious!
Spent 40 years in there and loved it!

The only thing I'll say in favour of booing during the game (and the lambert out chants) is that they're the things that the press pick up and there's been a pretty clear shift in how our game was reported with a lot more focus on just how dull we've become. Protests after the game or boos at full time don't do that, that's why things like McLeish' Bolton game happen, everyone knew he was a dead duck after that game and the rest of the season was just stalling the inevitable.
A home defeat in the next couple of months could well become the same point for Lambert if he doesn't find a way of making us worth watching.
I don't like the booing and I don't think I could join in but I totally understand why people do it and I think it's incorrect to assume that it doesn't make any difference.
-
The booing is sometimes at the result, sometimes at the performance and sometimes aimed at a manager, it seems to rarely be aimed at the team collectively.
I sang for Lambert to go, only the second Villa manager I have ever done that to (TSM the other) in 40 years - I think we are singing it 12 months too late to be honest.
I did it because I am sick of turning up and watching the various forms of tactical stupidity he is inflicting. It may be better that I don't turn up if it upsets others if I have my say but I don't think it makes much difference to be honest. Having a protest after the game isn't going to happen. Marching up to the McGregor statue pre-match may be noted?
-
I've read most of this thread but, I don't think I've seen much mention of just how good a pass that was from Sanchez to Benteke for the goal. Outside of the right foot wasn't it? Apologies if it has been mentioned.
-
IMHO we should turn up.
I want to watch and support my team...I want us to win and I want to play my, albeit minimal part in that. I want the players to love us cheering them on and appreciating us inspiring them to that bit extra that we can give them. But I hate what Lambert seems to be doing to that team and I don't know how I can communicate that opinion.
Booing the team at any point in the game doesn't seem right if we can see it's the shite set-up that's the problem.
I don't know what we can do tbh.
-
Unless we are getting twatted out of sight i'm not a fan of booing etc during a game. Open season at the final whistle though.

One of my points on another thread ds.
He plays a brilliantly safe game imho but varies it now and then with a risky/opportunistic/positive pass designed to catch the opposition out.
His pass on Sunday was a perfect example.
But watch him - he does it all the time. Passes to a player who seems to be marked but gives it to him on the side where the player can easily move away from his marker and go on and do something else...easily taking the marker out and opening up the play.
He is also one of the few players who gives the ball and immediately moves into space to get it back, if needed.
IMO he is the best player we have by a million miles!
Has he got a few mates back in Colombia?

I doubt i'd still be following the villa if i went for the football because it's fucking tedious stuff, i go to have a good day out with mates and to back the team till i can no longer speak.
I agree that's it's fairly pointless in suggesting how people should support the team and i don't expect any the Trinity to spontaneously break into the huddle, but we've had so many people calling for more support for the team at home, I think it was 97% of those asked in the supporters trust survey thought that the atmosphere needs improving and a lot of those people questioned must go to games. Improving the atmosphere isn't rocket science, it's a matter of singing and clapping. Now i know some people want to sit and watch the game but to hear nothing from vast sections of the Holte apart from a couple of renditions of "we want Lambert out" is a bit soul sapping.

It is really reflecting the nature of our games these days, which are also soul sapping - :-(
A chicken and egg situation, really, and you could put forward a decent argument over which of those needs to come first, but the fact is, there are a load of depressing statistics about Villa these days, and the ones at home are the worst.
It's not really surprising things are like they are.
In fact, if anything is surprising, it is that it has taken this long.

And Lambert has always, consistently, said that the team need to give the fans something to shout about.
The fans' response has been slow in coming but is exactly in line with his own beliefs.
Apparently.

Thing is we know that Lerner doesn't want to get rid of Lambert. So, the only way we can at least show that this really isn't all right is to boo. I'm not a booer but I'm happy to hear it if it forces Lerner's hand. I don't like booing the team but how else do we get across our dissatisfaction?

As has been pointed out the booing is a means to an end. It gets picked up by the media and gets across the Atlantic to the owner, the single person who can take sufficiently radical action to halt our slide. The last two weeks has seen a massive change in attitude by the media towards Lambert albeit fifteen months overdue. Lambert has been Lerner's human shield kept in place to distance the owner from the consequences of his own mistakes.
As for Paulie's observations about contrasting fan behaviour patterns the Holte is where I started and it is where I shall finish, shouting and bouncing up and down and shouting myself hoarse and growing old as disgracefully as possible. Never seen the point of behaving any differently.

I have always been a Holte Ender even if I have occasional forays into what is the human jungle of the Upper Trinity - I go to sing and shout and act like a kid - I go in K3 or K4 s that is where people tend to act in the same way - standing during the match is sometimes a problem as my 55 year old spine often complains but I still prefer it.
At no point have I ever gone with the intention of booing the Villa - if people think doing this during the match makes them play worse then they haven't been watching very closely for most of Lambert's tenure as they play the same whatever we do.
Vivre la Revolution!

It would be nice to see the press start to hold him against the inconsistencies with this sort of statement and the "statistics don't matter" statements against what he's now coming out with.
As he's not Moanrinho or Ferguson they might just do it instead of blowing smoke up his ass.
