Watching Villa now you can see the difference with the passing and movement. You know that every player Lambert wants, that player can be comfortable on the ball and he would have been watched alot before he is purchased.
We are not going to get random signings anymore (Heskey, Harewood) or players who just might be available unless that player has been watched regularly and we know how he plays.

I love Villa at the moment, we will have off days and sometimes it is not going to work however you can see so clearly there is a massive plan evolving under Lambert.

Clean sheet, looked really comfortable and the third goal was pure entertainment.

Well comfortably through with hopefully no injuries and some cracking goals. Now we just need to take the defence through to the PL and get rid of that unwanted record of games since a clean sheet.

At times we looked brilliant, at times we looked sloppy, at times we looked labored. Never looked like losing though. The impetus went with the subs, but Helenius and Tonev worked hard. If you take 3 players with the quality of Delph, Gabby and Benteke out of any team, they are going to be much poorer for it.

Job done and I really enjoyed watching us play.

Top finish for the first, great cross and header for the second and the third was a bit special (KEA was superb in the build up to it and the final ball from Benteke was perfect).  Very easy win but did it in some style, think we could've scored a lot more but we seemed to just want to keep it neat and compact once we got the third.

Jed Steer - one game, one clean sheet.  Can't really see how Guzan can force his way back in.

I still have a nipple on from that third goal.  The first two weren't bad either.

We all have to remember it is still early in the season and there are going to be mistakes or passages of play that are disjointed. But when we score goals like our third you realise how far we've come, where we are going and that not many teams will be able to do that. Certainly not many of those teams expected to finish below 6th

Well, it will be interesting to see what sort of team Spuds put out.  With Eriksen and Lamela coming in, they look like they will have a big squad.  Big game under the lights though, the young lads will see the Carling Cup as their chance to win something and really kick start this era.  I think we'll be right up for it and it could be a cracking match.

I'm guessing most of the team balls were allocated today before tonights matches and anyone playing today got the later numbers.

I still cant get a decent gif that shows the build up in full. This doesnt do the third justice at all.

Just said the same here. Stunning goal, and regardless of the opposition, it was a truly brilliant bit of football.

Please Weimann looked much more like himself tonight. We need him like that, being a terror and working hard as it seemed to not be there last couple of weeks.

We didn't concede a goal!! In a competitive match!!

Surely the FA will hold some sort of inquiry into the betting patterns surrounding the fixture.

Because if there's one game this season where their misfits will definitely get a run out, it will be this one.

Don't know about the possession stats, but it's nice to see they'd got their fingers on the pulse in the live text for the third goal, just like I remember it :o

What are they on? Who is so crap at editing that they need that much time to line em up and shoot em out, for goodness sake.
I had a go at ITV last year for late highlights, but this is totally taking the proverbial and, and, and...

I imagine Albion and Blues on Tuesday and Us on the Wednesday, as they won't want Arsenal and Spurs travelling up on the same day nor Us and Blues playing on the same day.

Having difficulty getting my head round the concept that the opposition didn't score. Bar a couple of scares in the first half we were pretty comfortable throughout, and when we did get into 4th gear we played some lovely football and scored 3 quality goals. I still get a bit frustrated when we pass square and back too often, and sometimes I wish we had a shot rather than over-passing it, but in PL and his methods I trust. Delph is turning into a top notch player, and when he, Gabby and Benteke went off the pace dropped out of the game. Decent crowd (22,000-odd) for a tie against League 1 opposition - job done, back home quick, bring on Spuds

I thought they worked hard but all the urgency had gone out of the team by the time they came on, it was like watching a cat with a mouse, we probably could've had a few more goals but we just had a nice easy half an hour at the end of our 4th game in 11 days.  Fair enough for me, the game was comfortably won by the time we made any subs.

Just home from the match. Good result easily achieved and some real high points. But, there is a lot of improvement potential. Rotherham should have taken the lead when crap defending led to that ball flashing across Villa's six yard box. We did not start to pass and move until we took the lead. Better and more clinical judgement would have meant more goals in the last half hour.

I'd like to see the bit just before that tackle that got him a yellow, it looked like the rotherham player went through him so Delph got up and returned the favour, but they didn't show it on the replays.

They put that ball in across the box that no-one could get a touch on.
Perhaps that will be shown 14 times to show how the plucky underdogs could quite easily have gone ahead and it would have been a totally different game and we would all be looking at a big shocker on the back pages tomorrow.
But they didn't and we cruised through a game we should have cruised through.

It was ok, I thought we did a job.

Players who stood out for me were.....
Okore really impressed me, also giving Vlaar more confidence in defence.
Delph looking like a proper player now.
Weimann was all over the place, hardworking.

There were some spells where we knocked the ball around comfortably, which was good to see.
But there were also lots of misplaced passes and forced balls in the first half.

Really enjoyed the game tonight, lots of promise for the coming season.

I still think we need a midfield playmaker, it would really make a difference, and Milner would fit the bill perfectly.

By his own admission he's not too good in the air.
And tonight really showed that.
He's got a lovely touch on the ball and a good eye for a through ball, but I don't think we saw any of that tonight, more's the pity.
I think he needs to get some some faggots and peas down him and spend a bit of time in the weights room.
Don't wanna be there when he starts squeezing the farts out though! ;-)

Enjoyable game, beautiful evening. Good to see Sylla involved although he looked a bit rusty. Plenty of potential there IMO. The few touches for Helenius did indicate that he cannot win headers nor does he have much pace. Can that really be right?!

Agree totally Paul, he gets pushed out of headers very easily but also seemed to misjudge the flight of he ball, he was no where near 2 of em ???
At least he got 30 mins under his belt though.

Comfy win against Div 3 opposition, which is what it should be.
And it was.
3 cracking goals.
Clean sheet!
Glory be!
Bring on the Spuds!
UTV!

(Delph was outstanding - except for the silly booking - totally unnecessary; wish he wouldn't do that in that sort of position - brilliant goal!).

I'd like to see the bit just before that tackle that got him a yellow, it looked like the rotherham player went through him so Delph got up and returned the favour, but they didn't show it on the replays.
Agreed.
But would love him just to let it go now and again - rise above it sort of thing.
Thought the ref missed a few crude challenges tonight, but as long as no-one's injured from it we can overlook it.
(Thought Okore looked as if he'd copped an ankle twatting late on but played on).

According to the BBC stats, we had 48% possession of the ball.  Really?

We had so much of the ball in the 2nd half it was almost embarrassing - at least 65% I would have thought.

Re Helenius:

No he's not great in the air, despite his height, but is blessed with good technique.
I said when we signed him, that Cornelius at Cardiff would look the better player this season  as he's physically more ready for the game over here, but that longer term Helenius would be the better bet if he could adapt to the physical side of our league.

Think a more skilful, technically adept Ormandroyd instead of Crouch.

My brother-in-law described him as a poor mans Zlatan v Cornelius as a Andy Carrol light.

How does he compare to Crouch?

I'd say much better on the deck, a bit more pace when he gets going, but nowhere near as effective in the air.

I don't think you'll ever see him score a goal like Crouch's on his debut for us, with a flying header from somewhere between the penalty spot and the 18 yard line.

Patchy at times, especially the endless passing across the back 4, but some of the fast pace passing in tight situations across midfield was a joy to watch at times

3 great goals

Steer - Interestingly a guy i work with blames a lot of our defensive frailties on Guzan -tonight he just smiled as we change keeper and keep a clean sheet!

Bennett - Not sure he is going to make it at top level - looks more like a boyband pin up than footballer and his positional play is atrocious
Vlaar - So much better next to Okore
Okore - I can see a new Villa legend in the making here - gets stuck in and is as tough as old boots - very good defender
Bacuna - If there wa sa position between right back and right wing he would be perfect - as there isnt i cannot see him threatening the 1st X1 much
Delph - High energy, superb goal, silly booking
KEA - Looked the part and his workrate off the ball chasing and harrying was excellent - took 2nd season to find his pace
Westwood - More Carrick than Carrick - my MOTM - tirelessly and effortlessy ran midfield - took passes to ease rpessure and created space going forward - another one we need to tie up with a huge contract as he will be picked off
Weinmann - so much energy he must have 3 lungs - superb strike and never stopped
Gabby - Worked his nads off - will we see a better cross than that all season?  His run from own half to set up Westwood was orgasmic
Benteke - Made one sublimely, scored one majestically - didnt do a lot else other than constantly moan to ref (hope he stops that)

Lambert - really good banter with his opposite number, clearly enjoying his team as much as we are

Crowd - good numbers but atmosphere a little flat - shame really as performance was better than that

Your missing from Benteke that he played 3-4 lovely cross field passes to Bacuna and Weimann on the right, 1 in particular, midway through the first half, we should have done more from but there was no one in the box for Bacuna to cross to.

What would we do if benteke got injured? Is helenius ready? Or would we have to play gabby up top? Or change the way we play? Couldn't see Weimann playing that role.

The passing for the third goal was lovely, more like what we saw in pre season. I think a better team would have nicked it off us though. Hopefully we can sharpen up the passing as the season progresses. A 2 1/2 week break may not help us there, except for our internationals.

Lots of intense 5 a sides for me at bodymore over the next fortnight I reckon.

Really enjoyed the game even though my seat had been sold despite being in the Cup Scheme and therefore having to move elsewhere. It got me into the right frame of mind for a match when I successfully fended off the attempt to charge me a £2.00 booking fee for the new seat!

Rotherham had a go "early doors" as was to be expected as they had nothing to lose but other than a few crosses into the box which made their supporters go "ooh" they did not create anything of note and Steer did not have a meaningful save to make that I can remember.

Three fine goals and albeit the opposition was limited but we look tighter at the back. Okore looks the business and Vlaar seems to have stepped up a gear.

Three quality goals and a clean sheet, job done.

Somewhat Ot, incidentally, I looked on the Rotherham fans site  and came across a thread about 'Best away support at Rotherham'

There's a post about Villa in '71 :-

"'Galant' wrote at 11:36 on 27 Aug:
Villa at home just over 40 years ago in the league we are now in - 16,000 there - I was amazed when they scored as the WHOLE ground erupted. Nearly got crushed on the way out - my dad - all 5ft 6in of him had to shield me to stop me being trampled on. By the way we lost 2-0. First trip to villa park tomorrow - my granddad told me we should have beaten them in '61 - a long wait for revenge eh!

I remember that game as well, Galant!

I remember going round to my mates house on Kimmy Park and we watched the Football Focus? programme on telly before we set off to Millmoor, and they were doing a feature on Villa and saying how they were breaking all attendance records for Div 3 that season!

As we walked over Coronation Bridge and approached Millmoor there were Villa fans everywhere!
It was a great atmosphere but not a great result!

Interesting read Weedy.

With regards to last night they were an odd side. They played decent football for the first 15 minutes and could easily have taken the lead, but once we scored they resorted to trying to kick us off the park. That Revell up front claimed for everything (as did their fans).

Pleased to keep a clean sheet and all 3 goals were excellent.

Thought it got Weimann and Westwood up to speed (don't think they've been at the standard they set themselves last season so far in the league).

Comfortable win.

Delph played well yet again (though I notice he still has the ability to commit stupid tackles).

Our stadium is fantastic.

I saw a picture very similar to this one:

But it was taken in the lower Doug Ellis next to the North Stand, right in the corner. It was at night, stadium was empty and the floodlights were on, wish I could find it, wanted it as my desktop background.

EDIT - In fact it was very similar to this, I'm assuming it's from the same set:

Walking back to the car after, a couple said that it's a disgrace VP doesn't get Cup semis anymore because of "that money-grabbing wembley". My brother has lamented in the past on how, no matter how long he lives, he'll never get to experience Villa Park as an away supporter.

wow , their fans on their forum rate us pretty highly.

Villa park holds something over 42k and when theres less than 30k in there its noticeable, all due respect Rotherham weren't going to wet the apetite of a lot of our fans, but I am expecting high 30k for spuds and then we will generate more noise.

the match last night , I think we were comfortable again Delph was the man, Al ahmadi is solid. great goal from Andi, Gabby made Bentekes goal. our goalkeeper was poor (fgs that's a joke) Bennett I like although I know his got work to do, and therefore I suppose I have to cut Bacuna some slack although I aint sure what he contributes and this unlike Saturday was against lower league so really he should of got around more imho. The whole build up and execution to Fabians goal was worth the entrance fee...

'Wet the ape tite' means apply water to a monkey's genitals. No doubt indeed that more Villa fans may have attended the match if they had not expected to be required to undertake such a ceremony. Spurs at home, on the other hand, should really whet their appetite.

Hardly sounds like World War 3. "threats of violence"  Could just have been two groups of 4 gobbing off at each other. Same thing that happens on a regular non match night down New Street.

there where at least ohhh 12 Villa fans aged between 12-17 gobbing off at 3 teenage Rotherham fans who to their credit stood their  ground whilst our so called fans kept at least 20 foot  away making empty threats if it's the same incident I witnessed in the main concourse. I was speaking to the Rotherham lads to try and get them to move away but our top firm just followed shouting and making the usual empty threats, the nearest it got to a row was when I nearly twatted one of the Villa boys. This was about 22.30 after getting off the train after the match.....trouble my arse

Oh and a big fuck you to the buses. I get to the 7 stop within minutes of final whistle and no 7 for over 20 mins. How hard can it be to work out that at the final whistle some of the 20,000 will want a bus into town?

The trains weren't much better. Not enough of them and never on time.

As for the game I was once again impressed with how we played. Rotherham did have one decent spell but Weimann's goal put an end to that.

I agree that Delph's goal was the pick of the bunch but they were all very well worked. There are occasions where you wish someone would just have a shot, but on the other hand every likes a pretty goal!

Spurs will be another challenge altogether, but if we can maintain our rate of progress over the next month we don't have anything to fear.
