A fellow Villa fan has just e-mailed me with the following:
Just been stated on WM Radio that Lerner has a meeting arranged with Lambert at Bodymoor Heath early next week.
-
Don't rush Randy, plenty of time.
-
'Everything all right Paul? I don't really understand this soccerball'. 'Yes boss, we pick ourselves up and go again'.
-
After the transfer window has ended?
-
After the transfer window has ended?
Are you surprised? I for one am not one bit surprised.
-

Thats just my sarcasm.
-
How many meetings do they need to realise we are staring down the barrel.
It's a bit like the scene in Father Ted when Dougal is on the milk float with a bomb, and the other priests keep on saying another mass.
-
It is not meetings we need,it is some action and fast
-
Perhaps he might sack Lambert after the Newcastle defeat? (I predict we'll lose)
-
My only hope is he knows how to take a corner, and puts on an impromptu training session.
-

Right at the end of the transfer window. Figures.
We're not being told the truth.
-

we live in hope
-
If we lose against Newcastle then Lambert will be sacked at this meeting i would say.
-
I do feel a bit sorry for Lambert, I'm willing to bet he's not been given the money he's been promised
-
I do feel a bit sorry for Lambert, I'm willing to bet he's not been given the money he's been promised
Which is a major factor, but it doesn't excuse our defending at corners and appalling, disjointed second half displays.
-
I do feel a bit sorry for Lambert, I'm willing to bet he's not been given the money he's been promised
Have mentioned elsewhere that I was told this by a mate who knows Culverhouses sister at end of December, but I thought he was taking the p. Seems like it may be correct. That said, I will never defend Lambert after his tactics in the last 35 minutes against Bradford, was so embarrassed watching that
-

Maybe Randy's noticed that man to man marking doesn't seem to be working, so is going to suggest the zonal approach.
-
Is this their first meeting?

agreed, I also think Lambert's been well and truly shafted by Lerner. Doesn't mean he hasn't made mistakes but I reckon Lerner has seriously gone back on any spending promises.
It's clear in my mind anyway that MON had similar or just saw what a bunch of fuckwits they were so walked. And you could hardly blame him, would you want to work for such a bunch of incompetent fools?
-
Can't say the quality of his signings so far has particularly impressed me, particularly in defence. Everything Millwall did came down our left again.
-
Is this their first meeting?
PL flew out to the US last week for a meeting with Randy Lerner.

sorry, it was tongue in cheek

In that case he could resign and im sure mons lawyer would play the constructive dismissal card - as long as he goes i dont really care how it happens.
-
I don't buy the Lerner has withdrawn funds thing. I reckon he has been too stubborn to spend this winter so far. In fact, I am sure. Past history shows Lerner if needed will back the manager, the wage bill is much lower than it was, and we are in the shit.

The net spend since O'Neill left has been a couple of million or so.
Even when he bought Bent in January, it was using the profits from Milner the previous summer.
I don't believe for a minute that Lambert has been told he can spend x million but prefers to stick it out with things as they are.
The club is now self sufficient, well, I say "sufficient"...

No worries, I realised that but I think that it is strange for another meeting and so soon.
Perhaps Randy 's bringing some money over so that they can try and do some 'cash only' deals before Friday!

We're not being told ANYTHING!!! Got to the point where I'd settle for a little lie, just to tide me over
-
I know Paul Lambert can't organise a defence but is he also incapable of using a phone?
Or have Flybe offered us some special deal on Airmiles... fly 100,000 miles, get a free centre-half?

Is there any truth in this meeting talk , where did radio wm get it from ?
If true i suspect randy will take his chopper to lambert should we lose on tues.

Lambert said a while ago that he had targets lined up and was looking to strengthen in January. He was clearly promised funding and now it has been withdrawn.
-
I don't buy it neo.
The money required is not massive, so either Lambert's targets ended up not moving/ staying/ going elsewhere, or he has changed his tack on them.

In that case, where was a backup plan ?
-
I liked the comparison of the meeting with Father Ted and the bomb.
I think it will be more like the scene from Waterboy in which Henry Winkler visits the home of Bobby Boucher, the waterboy of the Louisiana Mud Dogs to sign him as defensive blocker. Momma Boucher says her son is never going to be allowed to play that "Fuzeball" so shut up and eat your snake sandwich.
Lambert has probably got one of those lads who were handing out the flags last Tuesday lined up to play fuzeball.
-
The twat will meet him the day after the window has closed.
-
I don't buy it neo.
The money required is not massive, so either Lambert's targets ended up not moving/ staying/ going elsewhere, or he has changed his tack on them.
Then you look for new targets. No manager operates expecting to get every single one of their targets. Thus they have 2nd/3rd choice targets on their radar.
-
To sack him ?
It will be to late to back him by then.
-
Paul will say "Gee whizz Randolph, apart from a couple of bad results, everythin's just going' reeeeeeeal swell sir". This will be enough and he'll fuck off back to Ohio or wherever until the summer, just in time to see them raising the npower Championship flags above the Witton Lane Stand.
Pair of incompetent ******.
-
Stay tuned for another episode in everyone's favourite disaster movie. It looks to me as if PL has been well and truly shafted here. Lerner needs to come out and show his hand, the tnuc.

There's a good chance that he will come over but it is probably WM just having a punt. If he doesn't show up it will be 'Lerner cancels plans to meet Lambert for showdown talks'.
You would think that local radio would not try to play the tricks of the big newspapers and would just report facts. I have no doubt that the whole thing is fabricated.

Should this be true it'll be a namby-pamby 'support' meeting. There will be no sacking, it's not Lerners style.

Any sacking he would skulk away from and leave the dirty work to faulkner.
As mcleish said he was very supportive and never gave him any cause to worry , mcleish went in expecting to discuss transfer budgets only for faulkner to tell him pack your bags.

It's all speculation that alleged money promised to Lambert has been pulled. Wasn't there talk from Pelty or some, supposedly authoritative source in August that Lambert actively chose to bring in lower wage earners from lower league sides? I think the Dempsey bid proved that there was scope for leeway in making a big signing (or more, who knows?).
Lambert could well have had targets lined-up for this window but maybe they've knocked him back after seeing our form utterly collapse in the last five weeks. Maybe the clubs in question have also raised their prices knowing we're desperate and thus we don't want to be made mugs of.
Lambert has praised Lerner a number of times recently unprompted. He spoke to MON before taking the job - presumably O'Neill had plenty of good things to say about Lerner as well as not so good.
We're all just looking for someone to blame at the moment and it's clearly a combination of an owner who doesn't seem sure of himself in this business, a manager clearly still learning at the the biggest job of his management career and a host of players who are suffering from a clear lack of belief and confidence.
-
"So Paul, have you come any closer to finding Rosebud for me yet?"
He's also busy looking for Lerner's childhood teddy bear, Bobo.

Statement tomorrow AM at 10:00 apparently.
Interesting. Imagine it will be backing Lambert.
True. I doubt it'll be new signings! I think it might be a re-statement of the General's leaked comments.

It's downright ignorant to not make any statement to your paying customers. Lerner is just fucking odd and a screwball. Just sell-up!
-
Wasnt there a public vote of confidence in mcleish last year? - not a peep from faulkner either .
-
Win or draw on Tuesday, they meet at Bodymoor.
Lose and they meet in Dougs back garden.

I'd go for at least 50% being a bit sh1t...

Yeah, saw that. To be honest, I'm not sure if it would have made any difference either way. It's not statements we need from the club, it's actions.

Seemed a bit odd - why would anyone issue a statement to say they are going to make a statement.

Under pressure: Paul Lambert is facing the chop as Aston Villa boss (Picture: AFP)
Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert says he will fight for his job following the club’s humiliating FA Cup exit at Millwall – but will have to reportedly explain himself to owner Randy Lerner next week.
Lambert has suffered another disappointing week in charge at Villa Park, with the club currently fourth from bottom in the Premier League and now exiting both cup competitions to lower league clubs, with the latest that crushing 2-1 defeat to Millwall.
They are the kind of results that have installed Lambert as the favourite to be the next Premier League manager to be sacked, but speaking last night, the Scot says he will fight for his job.
‘There are two ways to deal with it – you either accept it or come out fighting, and I will keep fighting because I’m not brought up to accept it,’ said Lambert.
‘I’ve got to handle it – you are the custodian of the football club and I will try everything I can to turn it around.’
Poor: Aston Villa players have not performed well this season (Picture: Reuters)
The comments could come too late though, with reports emerging that the Villa boss is set to face the owner next week to explain how he will turn around the run of poor form.
Lambert is hoping to be given extra funds to spend in the transfer market to help drag Villa up the table, but given their precarious position, Lerner is said to be cautious at investing.
Further news is expected after the meeting scheduled before Wednesday at Villa’s Bodymoor Heath training centre.
-
Randy probably make 30 millions pounds available after the transfer windows close then withdraw it when it open. Knowing our luck.
-
Eastie - note the word 'reportedly' in that quote who put up. That pretty well confirms it is bullshit.

is that after Tuesday's match?
-
Hasn't Lambert stated that Villa have enquired about a number of players but they were out of our range, taken at face value it could be that the bar has been set on wages and the type of player he wanted ere too expensive. Whatever, the incompetence is breathtaking.
-
I do feel a bit sorry for Lambert, I'm willing to bet he's not been given the money he's been promised
I think you are wrong on that .
-
Didn't we spend the Dempsey cash on Benteke?
-
Randy ' Hey Lambo , another shite result last night against those Newcastle'
Lambert ' Sorry boss , I didn't expect Newcastle to get 7 corners , are you sacking me? '
Randy ' why no , Villa can't get relegated from the Prem can they ? They don't relegate teams in this league do they ? '
-
... shit!
Some of them will need to improve to be deemed 'shit'
Haha very good. Got me laughing.
-
I think the first question RL will ask is 'How did we get on last night?'
-
Lerner does speak to Lambert . He puts a letter into a bottle and throws it into the north Atlantic Ocean.
-
I do feel a bit sorry for Lambert, I'm willing to bet he's not been given the money he's been promised
I think you are wrong on that .
Me too. I think this is much more a stubborn scot not wanting to spend and prove he is right or get value for his £, than an tight American refusing to spend.
Also, I imagine he will see spending as conceding defeat on what he has spent already. He seems to have dug himself a hole.
-
How much do you think he can spend?
I find it hard to believe that he's been given millions to spend in January and is just sitting on his hands.
-
Dunno, it is just a feeling from watching the way it has gone this month. Not a huge amount, and that may be hindering who he wants, but I reckon he could get a couple in.
If we lose against Newcastle how his position remains tenable is beyond me.
-
I know Paul Lambert can't organise a defence but is he also incapable of using a phone?

-
Why on earth would he do that? As shit as he is, I can't believe he actually enjoys the current situation.

Eastie, you seem convinced of this, and based on what I don't know.
But I'll wager that the reality is you know as much as I do, ie. sod all.
-
Thats fine leeb - he has said it himself countless times -
Manager Lambert has money to spend during January on possible newcomers and believes club owner Randy Lerner's investment in Villa should not be underestimated during his six years in charge.
The Villa boss said: 'I always speak to Randy. I've always had a good relationship with him.
'If you look at the years he's been here, I don't know how much money he has put in but it's a lot of money.
'If a couple of players come in during January, then great. But you can't fault Randy for what he's done for this club, that's for sure.
'January always gives you an opportunity to bring people in.
'We have conversations all the time and it would be wrong for me to say there is "X" amount available.
'You can work with what you've got and if one or two come in, then great.'
Lambert remains confident Villa will survive and preserve their record of 25 successive years of top-flight football.
He said: 'Do I still think Villa will be safe? Yes. Because? I just do. I said that from day one. I just do.

There's nothing to suggest that Lambert wouldn't be spending if he had a reasonable amount to improve the team.
We all know the purse strings have been very much tightened for years now, how people have come to the conclusion it's Lambert deciding not to spend is beyond me.
-
Maybe Warnock going will lead to some action. Sometimes these things happen in a sequence. As for the meeting, they may speak everyday for all I know.
-
There's nothing to suggest that Lambert wouldn't be spending if he had a reasonable amount to improve the team.
We all know the purse strings have been very much tightened for years now, how people have come to the conclusion it's Lambert deciding not to spend is beyond me.
Maybe because he sat on sky tv last week saying it was his decision not to spend so far .
The Villans currently sit 17th in the league, but the 43-year-old is insistent he will only sign players who he believes can improve his squad.
“There is a chance of no signings at all,” he told reporters. “There is also a chance you might try and get someone in so it works both ways.
“We’d try to do something if I thought the people we could get in would make it better. But if we can’t do it and I have to go with the group that’s there, then I’ll go with what’s there.
“What I don’t want to do is fill the place with people I’m bringing in just for the sake of bringing them in.
“It’s the wrong thing to do for this club. It’s wrong if they’re no better than the ones who are already here. I have to bring in people I think will make a major impact.
He said: "That's the decision I've made. The football club has been in relegation battles for the last few years. This isn't just new on them because they've been in it for a few years.
"It's something we are trying to rectify in a different way and we will still go that way.
-
Problem is with Paul's methods.
We need big, strong, young and experienced player with sensible value and sensible wages demand. but from what he want to pay
1. He need to buy aboard
2. He can't get the experienced player
3. Everyone know how desperate we are for players.
4. Players might have high wages demand to put Aston Villa off as they don't want to join a sinkinig ship.
5. Players might not be available
-
How much do you think he can spend?
I find it hard to believe that he's been given millions to spend in January and is just sitting on his hands.
If he is choosing not to spend it then he choosing relegation instead of survival. Bloody strange choice don't you think ?

Assuming Lambert does have some money to spend I agree it is only worth spending if it is on players who will improve the present squad.
If we are saying that every player across Europe who could be presently available to us is of the same or lower standard than what we presently have then they must all be of a shockingly low standard.
-
Agree dan, players should have been in long before now - too many huge points being dropped - risky strategy - all this "we wont go down , we"ll be fine " stuff is highly dangerous because i sure as hell cant see what he he seeing.

Seems that way , getting in the excuses in preparation , when he says weve been in relegation battles the last few years , we have only actually finished bottom half once in 5 years .

Lies, damn lies and statistics.
We spent most of Houllier's season in the bottom half it was only in the last couple of games that we made it safe. So we've been relegation contenders for 3 seasons now. In our efforts to trim the wage bill we got rid of too many players too quickly.
It seems obvious to me that what we need is a period of stability, not another change of manager.
-
He's believed 'from Day One' that we won't get relegated. How many other managers would even contemplate that at the start of the season?
-
In fairness to eastie, he's heard the same thing I have by the sounds of it. We'll see how things pan out.
-
He's believed 'from Day One' that we won't get relegated. How many other managers would even contemplate that at the start of the season?
Most would, when taking over a side who spent the previous season in a relegation battle.
-
For all RLs faults, its fair to say he has put his hand in his pocket. But just when we need it the most be seems to have pulled the rug. It makes no sense. Or is it the case that PL just hasn't been able to find the players he wants.
It would be good if the club let us know after the window closes.
-
In fairness to eastie, he's heard the same thing I have by the sounds of it. We'll see how things pan out.
We know that. He quoted you in a list of three people who knew it so it has probably come from the same source. There are only so many variations:
1 - Lerner won't spend.
2 - Lerner will spend but Lambert won't let him.
3 - Lerner wants to spend and Lambert is trying to find someone to buy.
-
Chris correct. if you are taking over a team that has been into two relegation fights you would consider relegation. People should stop chewing the fat on Lamberts words in such minutiae to look for what they term as excuses!

Just a pity that he isn't being very convincing in his beliefs. What an inspiration of a Manager!
-
Ignoring the words, I can't really see any defence for our recent performances. I think that's the biggest concern, our constant repetition of the same mistakes.
-
In fairness to eastie, he's heard the same thing I have by the sounds of it.
I think No3 is the most likely scenario.

Oh, I didn't see that "list" so awfully sorry.
I think #3 seems to be the most accurate as far as I know, which isn't much.
-
If Lambert does have money, and there is so much smoke and mirrors I haven't got a clue any more, and he has chosen not to spend it, then I think that is a gross dereliction of his responsibility as Aston Villa manager.
Christmas told him everything about what that squad needed to steady us and give fresh impetus. January has been the most desperate time since I started supporting the club in the 70s. We had a fantastic opportunity to get points on the board against our rivals and get to Wembley and his stubborness may have thrown it all away.
It makes me want to weep with frustration to be honest.

Got to get rid of the wasters first, and no I didn't hear that in the last hour.Shift a couple out, bring a couple in.Still a paper thin squad(apart from Dunne of course).

Agree, with the rider that the budget is small and he doesn't fancy what's on offer (at the moment) at the going price. If that's the case I don't blame Lambert.

Too many critics and sceptics on here when information is shared but paulie, maz and greg know where this is coming from and i trust them to keep it that way-
Ive heard again in the last hour lambert has always had money to spend in this window , he is the one choosing not to spend it so far , the money is there .
Lets hope he spends it wisely is what i was told a fortnight ago and also an hour ago.
Its no secret i would like lambert to be gone , but that appears extremely unlikely to happen .
There you go then.

For the record I'm disgusted at how ineffective we've been in the market so far when it was clearly paramount and has, in my opinion, ruined our season regardless of what happens next.
And whilst I'm loathe to consider yet another managerial change I'm fed up with the side not being able to get the Chelsea result and the avalanche of terribad that has followed out of their system. We know the team is young an inexperienced but it also shows a lack of leadership behind the scenes that has come as a nasty suprise.
It can still be turned around but this factory of sadness has to change production lines rikki fucking tick.
-
Stability would be great. But if that stability is in the form of Billy McNeill mk II, forget it.

By chosen not to spend it , lets say so far, i think he will surely spend it but it could all go down to a frantic last day , we signed westwood , benteke and bowery on deadline day and i wouldnt be surprised to see 3 more this time around .
Personally i think too many points have been dropped when we should have already signed players by now - but we will have to wait and see.
Im sure clampy will be manning all communication posts for us on deadline day .

Absolutely, why mention it? It's like a clumsy cleaner knocking over the Venus de Milo and saying "Oh, but its arms had fallen off anyway."

Maybe Warnock going will lead to some action. Sometimes these things happen in a sequence. As for the meeting, they may speak everyday for all I know.
As countless others have stated the problem is the wages - Warnock going is an extra million we won't be forking out to an underperfoming twunt for the next 6 months. Unfortunately Ireland, CNZ, Given, Hutton aren't going anywhere - so that's 6 million or so we will be spending and getting very little in return - this sea.
I think he has about 10m but doesn't see / can't attract players many of those who would play for a struggling team on short term contracts or with huge reduction in wages if we don't stay up.
Not that this would happen but (following a comment, or 9, Eastie made yesterday) I would love to see Lambert forgoing a huge chunk of his basic pay which is recompensed + 40% say if we stave off relegation.

Up to lambert to get the players now.

Pack it in the pair of you.

I laugh that that your ITK tells you nothing that anybody else doesn't already know, and you give the 'in the last hour bollocks'.I repeat he has told you nothing.

I repeat - pack it in.

So that's £20 on option 2, £20 on option 3 and £5 long shot on option £1. All bases covered. Just need to check the odds. If either party leave the club, it will be considered a non-runner so money back.

We will have a can of Tango for CB and a fucking KitKat in midfield. Fucking joke.

He said: "That's the decision I've made. The football club has been in relegation battles for the last few years. This isn't just new on them because they've been in it for a few years.
He's started getting this one in of late, I've noticed. A bit of back covering while things are crashing down around his ears.
I don't think we got rid of people too quickly, most of their contracts were run down, save for those who were any good. Oh and Downing thanks to Dalglish living 20 years behind the time. Their replacements have been almost to a man not good enough. CNZ, Ireland, Hutton, Given (past his best), Jenas, KEA, Holman, Bennett and the youngsters haven't developed Bannan, ALbrighton, Clark, Lichaj even

Think of that fresh orangey taste as we watch guzan picking another ball out of the net.

aye. I think most people realised the squad needed to be cut down form pubeheads time - its just the way they went about it. The sensible thing would have been to replace the *star* players with premiership experienced players, and the reserves with youth, so you have a situation of good players backed up by promising youth players or people bought in cheaply. We got star players replaced by youth or not at all and mental situations as an experienced reserve 'keeper almost certainly on far more than the 1st choice!

I get your point but if you look back (even to when Barry left) and tracked who left and who they were replaced by you will see that we started with a policy of replacing the best players with experienced players and then more recently, experienced players (of lesser quality) with young players.
I cannot be bothered to list the players but the outcome is that the replacements (even from the sale of Barry) have either not been as good or we have not been able to sell one to get two in to strengthen the squad. Add to this the change in playing styles that have made some of our players redundant and injuries to key players, you end up with a squad that is not good enough to compete.

Perhaps he might sack Lambert after the Newcastle defeat? (I predict we'll lose)
Right at the end of the transfer window. Figures.
We're not being told the truth.
We ain't being told fuck all...

It's not worth its own thread and I am not sure where to put it, so I'll put it here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2013/jan/26/randy-lerner-aston-villa-paul-lambert (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2013/jan/26/randy-lerner-aston-villa-paul-lambert)
If Doug Ellis were still in charge, it is fair to say we know what would have happened by now. The knock on Paul Lambert's door would have come the morning after the night before. And when I say the night before, I mean the Bradford match rather than the ignominy that followed at Millwall. Men of considerable wealth do not tend to appreciate being shown up in public. The lawyers would have been notified. Then Lambert would have been escorted to the exit, his belongings sent on in a Jiffy bag.
Unintentional apparently, but the Birmingham Post certainly rubbed a motorway gritter's worth of salt into a very open wound when it announced Randy Lerner was fifth in the newspaper's annual rich list last Wednesday. No doubt Aston Villa's supporters were thrilled to learn that the club's increasingly elusive owner had added another £300m to his fortune, taking his personal worth to £1.1bn, as they tried to make sense of how Bradford City, from the puddles and potholes of League Two, had left them on their knees.
It does raise the question about whether Lerner should still count as an honorary Brummie when he has pretty much been running Villa by remote control from his place in Manhattan and it is difficult to find anyone who can be sure when he next intends to pay us a visit.
He was not at Millwall on Friday for the latest ordeal in a season of basic ineptitude that is threatening to leave England's second city, as they still like to call themselves, without a top-division team for the first time in a quarter of a century. He was not at Villa Park to see the meltdown against Bradford and the incongruous sight of a fourth division team celebrating in front of a stand where the two tiers are divided by a banner carrying Brian Moore's commentary from the 1982 European Cup final: "Shaw … Williams prepared to venture down the left. There's a good ball. Played in for Tony Morley. Oh, it must be! And it is! Peter Withe!"
History now. Memories of another century.
Ordinarily, Villa's supporters might be able to take some form of malicious pleasure about the crisis that has taken hold of Birmingham City now their owner, Carson Yeung, has had his assets frozen ahead of his April trial in Hong Kong for his alleged part in a money-laundering venture.
Birmingham's problems navigating a way from one payday to the next certainly put Villa's into context. The entire squad at St Andrew's is for sale, at discount prices, before Thursday's transfer deadline. The club turned down a £6m bid from Southampton for Jack Butland last summer because they valued him at twice that amount. Now they would accept £2.5m. Twenty players are out of contract at the end of the season. All but three of their 29 signings since dropping out of the Premier League in 2011 have been freebies, loans or short-term arrangements. It is a tangled mess that could very easily lead them to the weed-strewn car parks of League One next season.
Villa, though, are in no position for schadenfreude. The whole of football is rubbernecking in their direction now. Their manager is not wearing the stress well. The crowd are restless, bordering on mutiny but holding back for now. All the signs are in place of a relegation waiting to happen and this, remember, is no longer the era of the yo-yo club. The string has snapped if you look at Bolton, Blackburn and Wolves, for example. All relegated last season, all now in the lower half of the Championship.
More than anything, there is this sense that Lerner has let his interest in the club slide since those early days when he talked such a good game and demonstrated his commitment by having the rampant lion, taken from the club crest, tattooed below his sock-line.
His last appearance was the 3-0 home defeat to Wigan four days after Christmas. Nobody sees Lerner having a quiet pint in the Holte pub these days. The club have become secretive about his scheduling, just like Chelsea when Roman Abramovich is going through one of his more elusive spells. Nobody seems to know if Lerner will be at Villa Park on Tuesday, when Newcastle's visit brings together two sides straying dangerously close to full-on collapse.
Presumably he would contest any allegations of losing interest and, to give him his due, there had been a £200m outlay before he stopped coming to the table and brought in a new strategy built to a large degree on developing academy players.
He might also point out the overall wage bill in the 2010-11 season was £25m higher than Everton's and that there are only three clubs – Manchester City, Chelsea and Stoke – above Villa in the transfer table of net spend over the past five years.
Yet Villa have made their worst start to a season in 43 years and it has been clear ever since that, if he was indeed still listening, a message needed to be absorbed before the damage reached the stage when it started to look irreparable.
As it stands, four days away from the transfer window clanking shut, we might already have reached that point. Who, seriously, would be taken aback now if Villa, confidence shot to pieces, could not clamber out of the Premier League's quicksands?
That is not to say the only antidote whenever a club runs into trouble is to write another cheque. It can help, though. Villa are fourth from bottom, with the worst defence in the league and 19 goals scored from their 23 games. At least Reading, directly below them, have some degree of momentum. Wigan have shown a few times that they understand the spirit of togetherness that is needed for an end-of-season feat of escapology. Even QPR are showing flickers of recovery.
Yet Lerner says nothing. The Birmingham Mail has already delivered a list of questions (No1: Are you still committed to Aston Villa?) and been ignored. Trying to explain another ghastly embarrassment on Friday, Lambert shunned every question from its correspondent. Four times he looked the other way and left the Millwall pressroom suspended in awkward silence.
It was pathetic stuff. In his position, Lambert might be better advised trying to ingratiate himself with the local paper rather than masquerading as a junior Sir Alex Ferguson.
In Lerner's case, he has no duty to be heard. There is nothing that says a football club's owner should be accessible to the media and public. Yet it might at least give him the chance to demonstrate he is still committed, determined to put it right and not planning to have his tattoo removed by laser. Turning up on Tuesday might be a start.

How the meeting will probably transpire:
RL: Paul, I'm disappointed with our elimination from the FA Superbowl at the hands of the Millwall Soccer Franchise.
PL: We'll pick ourselves up and go again...The lads will be really, really fine.
RL: Awesome!
PL: Any chance of some funding?
RL: LOL!!!!
PL: :(
RL: What progress is being made in the Premier Soccer League?
PL: We know we are in a real battle...We'll stay up.
RL: Stay up?
PL: You know...avoid relegation to the Championship.
RL: The Championship? Is that a rival league?
PL: No, it is the league below the Premier League.
RL: THERE ARE LEAGUES BELOW!!!!
PL: Sigh!
RL: If that is the case, then we must do something to prevent us being eliminated to this 'Championship' you speak of.
PL: Now we're talking :)
RL: You're fired!

Fuck me eastie make your mind is he going to spend yes/no.
I would be having a word with your ITK again.
The money is there - he hasnt spent it yet .
Will he spend it - surely he will .
But last night your ITK told you PL had decided not to spend it.I know 12 hours is a long time but come on.
Decided not to spend it so far - doesnt mean not at all obviously!
Well we all know that.Your ITK knows as much as the rest of us.The short side of fuck all.
Nice try - Im sure if he could read that he would be laughing his head off
Your ITK...is he dead?...maybe eastie is getting his info from the man above?
Perhaps he's blind?

How the meeting will probably transpire:
RL: Paul, I'm disappointed with our elimination from the FA Superbowl at the hands of the Millwall Soccer Franchise.
PL: We'll pick ourselves up and go again...The lads will be really, really fine.
RL: Awesome!
PL: Any chance of some funding?
RL: LOL!!!!
PL: :(
I think the exchange would end about here personally.

Very accurate? Lerner sacks another manager but refuses to provide funding? Yeah, that'd be ace!

So Randy isn't skint after all.....in fact, his wealth has increased by another £300M taking it to £1.1Billion, and he can't find poor old Paul £10-15M to buy 2 or 3 ''experienced'' players to virtually ensure our survival and the riches of the new TV deal kicking in from next season. Smart businees Randy!

How many meetings do they need to realise we are staring down the barrel.
It's a bit like the scene in Father Ted when Dougal is on the milk float with a bomb, and the other priests keep on saying another mass.
I'm all for another mass, I think the last mass went well
