First of about four if we're lucky.

Welcome Joe.
I hope you settle in well and quickly.

Hunch? And is Bowery one of the four?
-
As i've mentioned a few times in the speculation thread I really rate this guy and think he'll be a very good addition, welcome aboard young man!

er...why would you put a photo from your personal collection on here? If you and Joe have something going, I suppose that's ok and it's your business. But spare the rest of us JP ;)
-
Could be a good bit of business that!
-
Reckon he'll be a cracking signing.
-
Welcome and good luck.
-
Welcome Joe!
-
Welcome Joe. Hope you're better than your brother Gordon who i've heard mentioned a lot over the years down VP.

aul Lambert is convinced that Joe Bennett will "thrive and fit in exactly with what we are trying to build here" as the England U21 international defender completed a four-year deal which will secure his future at Aston Villa to the end of the 2015-16 season.
Bennett's capture from Middlesbrough has increased the number of signings made by the club in this transfer window to six, following on from fellow defenders Ron Vlaar and Matt Lowton, midfield general Karim El Ahmadi and wide man Brett Holman, along with goalkeeper Brad Guzan who re-signed following four years previously at Villa Park.
The 22-year-old left-back has been lauded by Boro boss Tony Mowbray for his "quality, speed and technique" and for Lambert his youthful enthusiasm, desire and energy proved compelling.
"Joe's a really good player, young and hungry to succeed and he's exactly the type of player we want here at the football club," said Villa boss Lambert.
"There's no doubt in my mind that he will thrive in this environment and he fits in exactly with what we are trying to build here.
"His energy level is really high and he can get up and down the pitch really well, which will be important for the team and important in terms of how we want to play as a team.
"He's an exciting signing for the club and I'm really pleased we've been able to take him here."
Bennett started 84 games in all competitions for Middlesbrough, appearing on eight more occasions as a substitute and scoring one goal after graduating from youth level at the Riverside and signing his first pro contract in summer 2008.
He was an ever-present for Mowbray's men in 2011-12, playing in 45 matches in all competitions and completing 41 appearances in the Championship.
In 2010-11 he was voted the club's player of the year and young player of the year when he played in 31 Championship games and 33 in all competitions, while his performances last season earned him the North East Football Writers' Association's young player of the year accolade.
"I am really excited to have joined a massive club in Aston Villa and I'm eager to fight for a starting place and get in the team," Bennett said.
"It's up to the manager to pick the team, of course, but it would be great to go back to the north east this weekend and make my debut against Newcastle at St James's Park.
"When I first heard about the move a lot of things ran through my head. There was excitement and nerves and most of all a real buzz about the prospect of coming to Villa and playing in the Premier League.
"Now that it's come around so fast, I'm just raring to go. I've had a look around the stadium and the training ground and the facilities are top-class. You can tell straight away this is a massive club.
"I know a few of the players from England U21s, the likes of Nathan Delfouneso and Nathan Baker and that will help in terms of settling in. I'm looking forward to it.
"My approach has always been to get forward and try to create things. In my opinion Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy are the best full backs around and if I keep working on my game and improving it I know I can succeed at this level and help the team.
"It was not long ago that I was given my professional debut at Middlesbrough by Gareth Southgate and it is a real privilege to now follow in his footsteps and join a club with Villa's heritage.
"I am very grateful to get this opportunity and I'm very grateful to the Middlesbrough chairman, Mr. Gibson, all of the Middlesbrough staff and fans and, particularly, Tony Mowbray for giving me the opportunity to prove my ability.
"I am fully focused now on my career here at Villa and I'm really eager to get started.
"My priority will be to impress the manager and gain a place in the starting XI. It will be a special moment when I pull on the claret and blue shirt for the first time.
"I'm determined to earn the respect of my team-mates and the Aston Villa supporters. I know it's going to be really exciting here in the years ahead and I really want to play my part."

Welcome Joe.

Welcome and good luck Joe.

I wonder if the Holte can come up with a version of this for him.

Hello Joe, goodbye Warnock?

Boro fans not bothered he has left which is worrying.

And rate Warnock more! Lets hope this is one for the future, like the other 3 potential signings and we are actually going to sign some really good players who are ready to come in now as well.
Anyway, welcome Joe.
-
Don't know much about him to be honest but I trust Lamberts judgement on him! Welcome joe
-
Welcome to the madness, Joe! You're only young so we're all hoping you have a long, successful career with us. Best of luck.

He has just come back from injury and hasn't played yet this season (I don't think) so I'm not sure if he will feature straight away.

This is the best but of that forum
"Yet more shyte we've got rid of eh?
Just like Graham, Morrison, Cattermole, Downing and Johnson.
Remind me again what league we're in?"
-
I don't know much about Joe either but welcome to the Villa.
-
Only time will tell if Joe is a good buy or not, but it's the manager's call, so he has to stand by his judgement, which by the way, I'd take over the 'boro fans forum, especially as they rate Warnock as a better player. Can't believe PL would think that.
Good luck Joe and welcome to B6
-
Good news. Hopefully a couple more signings to come!
-
Welcome to Villa Joe. Hopefully an end to our what seems everlasting left back worries. Likewise Darren I know nothing about him, hopefully a good signing.
-
Had never heard of him until a few days ago (sure that's my fault, not his) but it sounds like an exciting signing. Welcome Joe!
Right, who's next?
-
Welcome Joe, good luck.
-
I really like the fact he is pleased to sign for Villa and obviously holds the club in high esteem. We've had too many players recently that have been happy to settle for Villa and not have the hunger to succeed.

Welcome.

-
Welcome kidder. You will do fine.
-
Welcome, young Joe.
Looking at the photos on the OS, somebody should take him out for a balti or three, the poor lad looks malnourished.
-
Fuck off, Bennett.
Private joke that will only be understood by 2 other people in the world. In any case they live in New Zealand and support Hull so won't be looking at this site anyway. Slightly pointless post, all in all, but I just couldn't help myself.
-
Welcome Joe and good luck.

Welcome and good luck.

Good to have a player called Joe. It is a lucky name and carried by plenty of great Villa players over the years. I also like the name Bowery. I hate having my photo taken but somebody took a picture of my son and me larking about in The Bowery in our Villa shirts so it has to be a good omen. Welcome Joe.

I've never seen you play so no idea if you're good or shite...welcome to Villa and good luck! :)
edit: very good comments in his interview as well...now show us what you've got and do your talking on the pitch please.
-
If we can ride the wave of a couple of mixed seasons,we could have a crop of experienced players in their early twenties to really move on to the next level, could be wishful thinking, but least there seems to be a vision.
-
Gotta feeling this guy can step up to the PL plate. I hope I'm right.
-
Joe welcome. You have joined a great football club probably the best club. Now play your part in making the current team the best team.

Excellent. We needed to rebuild our defence...job done, hopefully. Welcome to VP my son and let's hope it's a long and happy stay.

How much was the actual transfer fee?
-
Does this mean the enda Stephens?
-
How much was the actual transfer fee?
Supposedly around £2.75m.
-
If he ever starts getting wound up on the pitch and is in danger of getting a red card can we all shout, in best Ahnuld Schwarzenegger impersonations: "Let off some steam Bennett!"
Hopefully a good signing. Sounds promising and it's another desperately weak area that Lambert's looked to address. So far his signings are doing well enough, so Bennett should follow suit.
-

Not bad! I'd assumed it was more towards £4 million. We might have genuinely got a bargain on this one.
-
A few years back I'm sure it would have cost us an extra 2 million and we would have paid it too.
-
Does this mean the enda Stephens?
Won't we need back up players?
-
I don't know much about him but hasn't he got a refreshingly plain, no-nonsense name.
I expect he'll play in black boots and pop in the outdoor for a bottle of brown ale on the way home.

Boro will receive £3m up front, with the fee rising in instalments for every 15 senior games he plays to a maximum of £4.25m. The Teessiders have also insisted on the inclusion of a sell-on clause.
-
Fair play to them adding a sell-on clause. We should think more carefully about that when we sell players - the one we had for Cahill was ridiculously small.
-
Is he still injured or will he be ready to start on Sunday ?

Yes, proper names, black boots, no tattoos and traveling on public transport to the game along with supporters is the way forward. Well, maybe the last one is a stretch too far but you know what I'm getting at.
Welcome on board Joe.

That's a good deal for Boro. £4.25m isn't peanuts for an unproven full back. Fingers crossed he's up to it.
-
Welcome to the club Joe, may you prosper!
-
Welcome to Villa young man. Now get on with it.
-
If its true that they insisted on a sell-on clause they must think highly of him and think that he will go places.

The only way they'll get the full amount is if he plays the equivalent of two full seasons. If he does that it'll be a bargain.
-
Quote from Joe Bennett on the official site talking about his sole appearance in the Premier League for Boro:
"I only made one appearance and then we got relegated that season. I am just looking forward to it again and can't wait to get going."
I hope it's the first bit and not the second that he's looking forward to.
-
I'm Just making a comment so all the new signing threads are at the top ha ha
-
I hope you are a star in the making and make us forget all about that last left-sided prick we got from Middlesborough...
-
Who was that??? We have never signed anyone else from Middlesborough have we? Not in recent times anyway.
-
I hope you are a star in the making and make us forget all about that last left-sided prick we got from Middlesborough...
As a person he is a prick, but we pretty much doubled our money on him.
I think we should celebrate Downing as we made a killing on him. We need to sell more average players for 20m in my opinion.
-
Not convinced. Seems to be a bit of a weak link.
-
He should have been sent off with two yellows yesterday but, then again, that was not a penalty; the foul began outside the area. So, Hughton had no real reason to moan, on the 'even out' rule. JB is flakey when defending, for sure, but then he is very young and slight of physique. He links and crosses well. He should improve. I'd like us to sign a seasoned centre back e.g. Lescott in the summer and use Baker or Clark at LB. Lambert won't do either.
-
Other teams see him as our weak point. That said, he has improved a lot in the past few games. He has a lot of potential but I think we should slot Clark in at left back for the next game (if fit). Clark is no world beater (yet) but I feel we would be a bit more solid defensively with him in for Bennett.
-
I like Bennett , i think he offers a lot going forward but he does need to work on his defensive game a bit and could do with beefing up a bit like gabby did - yesterday he had a bad day and i agree could well have got another red.
-
The way I see it he has great natural ability and with more experience and coaching he can become a better defender. A lot of the top teams have excellent attacking full backs who aren't that great defensively anyway. There aren't that many great wingers knocking around these days so hopefully he will be good enough to not be a liability. I'd take him over Warnock any day.
-
Good going forward, dodgy at times defensively. Sounds much like when Kyle Walker was here yet nearly everyone seemed to love him.
-
I don't know if he offers enough going forward to compensate for the percieved defensive frailties. Kyle Walker et al offered a lot more when they bombed forward.
-

Kyle Walker had amazing recovery speed though. Bennett is a constant source of worry. Hughton was right yesterday. Bennett should have seen a second yellow even before the penalty.
-
He was extremely foolhardy yesterday,
could easily have cost us the game, we don't need a liability in the last two games of the season, for all his natural potential ability he also needs a bit of common sense, which he seems to lack
at the moment
-

One of the problems is that there isn't a traditional left midfielder in front of him, so he is often left isolated one on one with wingers without any real support. Teams have definitely targeted him this season (including Bradford!!) and he has struggled at times.
-
Agree, that definitely adds to the pressure on him. Without traditional wingers, it's up to Gabby/Andi to track back, and they're often not deep enough to help out when the opposition wingers overlap with their fullback.
-
Just because MOTD pinpointed Bennett even having a shit yesterday give him a rest. Why oh why cant we be content were moving away and others are in more trouble than we are. The tug on the edge of the box they got a free kick never a booking. The pen was outside the box. He got booked yesterday it happens. It was only monday people were creaming their pants over him. I appreciate its a forum and points of view and all that but some just always seem to want scapegoats. We aint in a position to have Josimar or Roberto Carlos just yet were a tad raw. Watch and enjoy or go and cut the grass.
-
Post this on Post Match thread but perhaps better here.
I see the Bennett knockers are out in force again. Shirt pulling is part of the game these days and unfortunately Bennett got caught at it a few times. Look at what goes on in the penalty area these days and Bennett's were mild in comparison but it is far easier for a ref to give them outside the box. He must learn this and he will.
He was targeted yesterday due to his inexperience and he will learn to cope with the experienced PL players he comes up against. This is his first season in the PL for f**** sake. I am sure the coaches will work with him during preseason and tell him to not get so close to his player as he has the pace not to need to.
One thing that would help him is for the defenders and midfield players to play better balls to him. Constantly they knock balls behind him so that he is facing his own goal rather putting it in front of him.
He has been improving of late and I would put that down to confidence as much as learning. Yesterday was a high pressure game, the like of which he may never have been involved in. To keep on knocking him after a poor performance is not going to help him.
-
He should have been sent off with two yellows yesterday...
I'm not so sure, it seems every foul these days has to be a yellow card. He was guilty of a few pulls and pushes but it didn't warrant a sending off.
If it had been one of his own players Houghton would have argued the opposite way.
-

Personally, I cut the grass earlier, learned punctuation at school 40 years ago and have a sensible view, that Bennett will improve but Villa have no cover/ competition at left back.
-
I only saw the highlights of yesterday's game, and ok he made a few fouls but the only time he could have been sent off was the penalty and that wasn't inside the box. Maybe a bit fortunate, but nothing scandalous.
On the other hand I watched the whole of the Sunderland game back after the event and thought he was outstanding. Defensively reasonably secure, though he gave Johnson a bit too much room on one or two occasions, and maybe could have covered for the Sunderland goal. Other than that he was a stand out performer and thats a few times this season now where he has looked a real prospect.
Others have said that Lichaj did well yesterday, so maybe he should fill in next weekend, but I'd stick with Bennett in the long run.
-
I think Bennett was a bit tired yesterday. He just didn't seem fresh and I think that was why he made so many mistakes. Maybe he was not just physically but mentally tired too. Lambert spoke about players not being fully recovered from Monday and I think it showed most with Bennett. Perhaps he needs to work on stamina in training or it will come with age but I think a rest against Chelsea then he will right as rain.
-

He is definitely one of a few players who need to bulk up. Delph falls into this category as well, though maybe his injuries have stopped him from doing so.

Crikey, what a load of utter nonsense.
As if the people criticising him are not happy we are moving towards safety.
People are saying he was lucky not to get sent off yesterday, it's hardly the most controversial assertion, and nobody is calling for him to be hung, drawn and quartered.
-
I don't mind Gordon, but he could easily have been sent off yesterday.
-
If he was to get a second yellow it would have been for persistent fouling, not for the pen. Pulling a someone's shirt as they're falling over isn't a booking. He wasn't the last man either.
He could have cost us the game though yesterday. That isn't us picking on him, it's a valid point. He gave away too many free kicks (in dangerous areas). It could have cost us big time.
-
Bennett is a good player. His performance against Adam Johnson in the Sunderland game highlights his ability. We all know he is pretty good going forward; he's smart in keeping possession, can beat a player and can deliver a wonderful cross at times. Defensively, he hasn't been great but it takes a long time for defenders to get used to defending at the top level. I can point to players such as Gibbs, Bertrand and Rose from recent times that look shaky when first thrust into the team but after 2-3 years of exposure they look competent at this level. This is what we need to give Bennett, 2-3 years of belief and first team experience and I think he will be as good or better than the three names I listed above. He certainly has the potential.

Well said sir.
-
Joe Bennett seems to be our Marmite at the moment...you either love him or loathe him. He's a young inexperienced player learning his trade at PL level...he may get caught short a few times but he has the potential to improve his short comings whether that be his physique, defending or decision making. Teams have clearly been targetting him as our weakness but the flipside to that coin is that the more teams that do it then the quicker JB will learn and improve.
edit: it was a blatant intentionally clumsy challenge yesterday but it should have been a free kick rather than a penalty and the Norwich players who dropped like a tonne bricks because of a minor shirt pull should have been booked for being play acting pussies...Holt and Snodgrass I think were the main culprits?
-
It's possible to discuss a player's strengths and weaknesses without wanting to 'scapegoat' him. And discussing weaknesses doesn't mean we don't want the best for him, or think that he won't improve.
-
Good one to debate and everyone in agreement, basically. Alongside Sylla, probably the relatively weakest player in the team, but still doing good jobs and learning by the game. Well brought up, Legion.
-
What's evident is that the step up in division defensively has been tough for Bennett. He needs a dominating leader back there to coach him and bring him along. Put Lescott at the back with Bennett and he'll get better quickly. In fact, someone like Lescott will make everyone better.
-
Can't see him becoming a top class left back tbh as he struggles against anyone with pace and good movement. In time he might become a decent left winger.
-

Like most that come out of the Championship and lower leagues do to start with. Give him time before writing him off.

Agree.
I find it amazing that a few players had 'off' days yet not a whisper. Joe Bennett had an off day and nearly everyone's having a pop at him.

You reckon I think they're all "lower league garbage" then? From the first couple of games I thought Lowton and Westwood would be good players for us and despite poor form over xmas, both have been brilliant for us since March.
I think Sylla is looking like a solid midfield option for us aswell.
John e made a point on the Guzan thread sometimes you have gut feelings on players when you first see them, Bennett has improved recently but still too often when teams target him he struggles.
Not every young player will turn into a world beater hence Ridgwell, Steven Davis, Moore, Gardner, Whittingham all leaving us in the last 5 years.

Agree.
I find it amazing that a few players had 'off' days yet not a whisper. Joe Bennett had an off day and nearly everyone's having a pop at him.
We have such a great base to work with next year. We are building a really good team, something that we should aim to hold together for as long as possible. As others start going into transition (Everton, Spurs surely will soon?) we could sneak back into the top six within a couple of years.
-
I think he's played well in the last few games and certainly has skill going forward, but yesterday was a bad day. As the gentleman standing next to me, a well-known fanzine editor, said: "A red card waiting to happen". It's not so much Bennett's ability as his recklessness that worries me.
-
I am not having a go at Bennet but when opposition point him out as a weak link surely PL will have to consider bringing in competition for his position ? He needs a summer in the gym and he will be more confident when he has more strength to challenge players without tugging shirts and giving away dangerous free kicks. I actually think he was tired yesterday and did not have the energy to track players and get in the right positions. He had a good game against Sunderland but i think it took its toll on him in this match .........
-
He didn't have a great game, if he is struggling in the Prem next season I don't think he should play every week.
Tough times might make him grow up faster, or too many shockers might destroy his confidence long term.
Some competition in the squad for places (including Lb) would be very welcome.
Lowton and Westwood have stepped up the leagues and adapted, but different players mature at different times.
Phil Neville took longer to make the grade than his brother for example.
-
Yes he didn't have a good game but he was targeted by physical norwich. A more experienced centre-half may have helped him more, or a deeper lying left-sided midfielder. Apart fromthe fouls - which I accept are part of the problem -hedealt with theaerial challenge of Holt, and whoever else was on him quite well. Our tactics isolate him, and Lowton, and his attacking side ofthe game is coming on.
i do think there is a player there. and a decent defender. He's new to this level and has found the tactics haven't helped. A new player needs to built into a team but he hasn't had that luxury. If we survive, the experience of this season will stand him in very good stead. I think he will come on in leaps and bounds next year.
-
He's good going forward and can play a decent ball into the area, but the defensive side of his game is woeful. He's either always out of position or giving away silly fouls because he tries to make up for getting beaten.
-
I think that Joe Bennett is a bloody good footballer. I don't think however, he is a left back. His defensive decision making is too poor. I could see him being a good winger/wide midfielder.
-
He'll be fine.
-
If he was to get a second yellow it would have been for persistent fouling, not for the pen. Pulling a someone's shirt as they're falling over isn't a booking. He wasn't the last man either.
He could have cost us the game though yesterday. That isn't us picking on him, it's a valid point. He gave away too many free kicks (in dangerous areas). It could have cost us big time.
He was just bloody stupid though. I said straight after the booking they are going to get tight and try and roll him, because he can't help himself, Bennett has to grab every shirt near him. Should bind his hands before a game, would make him better!
-

We could really do with adding someone who can play in both full-back positions to the squad in the summer. I know we have been in for him before, but someone like Kyle Naughton from Spurs would be ideal.
-
There is one constant in our games and that is that the opposition play everything down Bennets wing, he has been identified as the weak link, that is not scapegoating him or sniping him it is a fact just have a look at the Norwich replay. The lad has skill no doubt but he is not over quick and is easily knocked off the ball, yes against a certain type of apponent he may do well and if we were mid table and safe we should persist with him but these last two games are so important we can't take the risk.
-

Hasn't pretty much everything that Norwich have done all season gone through Snodgrass? Who happened to be up against Bennett.
I didn't notice Sunderland focusing on him anymore than Lowton, even though he was up against their (supposed) best winger.

Another advantage of bringing Lescott in (if at all possible) is he's very comfortable at left back too.
I've seen enough of Baker to think there is something there to work with. Maybe not a guaranteed starter, but could be a big player for us in years to come. A further 15/20 games next year should bring him on further. Enough games to keep him involved, but not to the point that we're relying on him. Yet.
Clark -as a CB- I am less convinced about. Far too error prone, and doesn't seem to learn. He's been in and around the first team since 2009 now, so he should be looking more assured. If he wants to stay and fight for his place, kudos. But I'd be at the stage where I'd listen to offers -unless Lambert has a rethink and tries him at defensive mid.
Bennett (like Baker) isn't good enough to be a first team regular either, but could be in time. So an experienced CB who can offer genuine cover at LB would be a good option for us.

Before they got swamped, Sunderland tried to get the ball out to Johnson as often as possible and he saw a lot more of the ball than Larsson in the first half. Manchester United did the same the week before with Valencia, just as they did at our place in November when Stevens was playing there. It's a pretty simple tactic really - get the ball out to the right wing as quickly as possible and the lack of cover out there means the winger will more often than not be isolated one on one with JB. Even Bradford got some joy out of playing that way.
That said, I think the lad has ability and has had some decent games this season. He seems to have the natural ability to beat players and can whip a good ball in which, as others have mentioned, suggests he might be better employed further up the field.
-
Some of Bennetts defending is absolutely ridiculous. This habit of shirt pulling when the opposition player is facing away from goal is amatuerish. Perhaps Lambert will solve this problem over the summer break. Bennet has got talent thats for sure and could be a huge success in a left midfield attacking role
-
His crossing has been outstanding all season, but his decision-making in defence is appalling, as demonstrated clearly on Saturday. There is a great player in there, but either he needs move into midfield or he needs some serious defensive coaching to improve the obvious weak parts of his game.

Sunderland clearly targeted him, as did United, but I thought against Sunderland he dealt with Johnson really well. The difference being 1. he knew his game pretty well from Boro days, and 2. Johnson is not a physical mismatch, so Bennett did not have to climb all over him like a rash. Against United he would have been ok had the linesman been awake!
I do think he could genuinely play the wide left role of the attacking 3 even in the long term. He has good feet and a stunning left foot. I would love to see him shooting more. Bet he scores some crackers in training.

I think the whole defence could do with some coaching.
Whatever our views on Bennett, we need to support him over the next two games. Getting on his back is the last thing we need.
-
There was only one occasion when fat man Holt beat him in the air; the gut wrenching 92nd minute when Guzan came flapping. He wasn't great, but considering their plodders targetted him, he didn't do too badly.
-
I've only seen norwich on MOTD, but a difference I noticed from sunderland was how often he seemed isolated. The support he received from Delph previously didn't come on Saturday. Personally, I don't care who the full-back is, leaving them isolated is a recipe for disaster. He also appeared to be dragged inside a fair bit, leading me to believe the communication across the back four isn't all it could be; Vlaar ain't all that, so maybe Baker should be more vocal, he plays left-side, he should be more aware of what's going on over his shoulder, and let his teammates know about it.
All that said, I do think we have a cracking footballer in Bennett. Whether his future lies in the number three shirt remains to be seen. As much as I hate to use him as a comparison (again), I seem to recall Bale was a pretty shit full-back. Perseverance shall pay dividends, I have no doubt.

The communication thing is key. That's where we've lacked a Laursen. In all honesty, our defence under O Neill wasn't fantastically organised by any stretch, but we had Laursen, or later Dunne, who knew what they were doing and get keep the backline held together. Okay, so Dunne didn't really care about being here and his effort dropped significantly under Houllier.
What we need is a quality centre half, with enough experience at a top level. If not Premier league, then an equivilant standard. Someone who can organise things. Keep the young lads sharp and alert. Vlaar is not that. Baker is never going to be that, and I think long term, isn't good enough.
I also think with a dominent centre half who is vocal and commands his box, and Guzan wouldn't be rushing out to take affirmative action in the 93rd minute, and almost drop us in it.
Lescott could be that player. Otherwise I'm sure there's plenty of quality scandanavian centre halfs we could get or someone from the Bundesliga.
Next season, I would be worried if Baker or Clark were a first choice. I also think we need another fullback to push Bennett. The jury is still out on him. In terms of ability, he's got it. It's his footballing brain and positioning that is a problem. Those can be improved upon. That said, it amazes me with footballers sometimes, just how many moronically pointless free kicks and pens they give away.
Bennett and Lowton both need to work on their upper body strength too. My Mrs took one look at Bennett and asked me why we were playing a 14 year old.

I agree with a lot of what you say - or I at least understand where you're coming from - but I think the jury is out on both of these guys. I'd like to see what the close-season reflection time and personal development does to each of them.
I'm a fan of CC but I do think Baker may have progressed beyond him this season and - with more composure and some passing-the-ball lessons - he may be a very good CB next season. I remember Jonny Evans and Spurs' Dawson (to name a couple) who were flaky in their early games but both have come out on the other side of their early development and become reasonably accomplished. Even Cahill was somewhat flaky ...
-
Clark and Baker may prove useful still, and certainly could be good as back up options. That said, if our defence is to improve we most definitely need a top signing in the middle. Then Baker, Clark and Vlaar (who's not done enough to be the main man) can fight it out for the other spot.
Actually, the one I think who could benefit the most from us finding a new Laursen is Clark. He's got plenty of ability, he just needs a strong leader next to him. Curtis Davies looked a hell of a lot better whenever he played next to Laursen. When Laursen wasn't there, Davies looked like an accident waiting to happen. Had Laursen stayed another year or so injury free, at this point, Davies might have been a totally different player altogether. As opposed to plodding along in the 2nd tier now.
-
If we stay up, then the defence need a huge overhaul in the summer. We don't have any central defenders who can be relied upon. If we get a good, dominant player in, ie a Mellberg/Laursen/Southgate type, then any of Clark/Vlaar/Baker may come up to scratch, but all three of them have been hopeless this year. Clark just doesn't look like a defender to me, whereas Baker does but lacks Clark's quality.

I would go along with that. Vlaar ball watches and lets his man go far too easily. Clarke on the other hand gets too close, is turned or gives away a free kick that usuall costs us. And with Bennett I can't see on the basis that he has an ok cross on him but with all his other downfalls, ie. defending, then he might be the next Bale!!
One 28yr old + CB and LB for me next season is a must...if we stay up.
-
I would disagree with the people writing him off. I think it takes time to adjust to playing at the top level. Even Ashley Cole wasn't great defensively when he started out, it came with experience. Not that I am saying in a few years JB will be one of the best LB's in the world, just that his game will become more rounded.
-
I think people forget how dodgy Baines was for a long time too, until he really kicked on. Everton played Lescott at left back a lot in front of him. I think full back is the second most important, and definitely the hardest position to play in the modern game. I think a player like Naughton would be a good signing to give full on competition for both full back spots. Shedding Lichaj and Stevens, and signing 2 new, better full backs would be good.

Ash Cole wasn't a brilliant defender when he started out. He was quite suspect for his first few years at the Goons. That said, though Bennett has potential, I'm not saying he'll turn out to be the next Ashley Cole. He can improve greatly though.
The key is having a top class centre half who can help these kids during the game.

I wouldn't so much as say a huge overhaul as - like you said - a dominant centre half is what we really need. Baker and Clark, I thought, really struggled together, but stick them alongside a decent, experienced centre half and it improves things immediately.
I am still far from convinced by Joe Bennett. I am not saying we should move him on or anything, he may turn out to be good enough - and has looked the part far more often the last few weeks - just that I don't fancy risking another season with him as our only viable option at left back.
-
Go out and buy Ashely Williams and stick him next to Bennett and he will be just fine. He's young, naive and raw and needs some leadership next to him on the pitch (as do the others) Vlaar isn't the man to lead us (it doesn't appear that way anyway) we need a real PL experienced CB to give the others chance to grow into the role. Do you think Williams is gettable? Liverpool bound?
-

I have never said one bad word about Bennett even when we were getting trounced by everyone in December, so I wouldn't class myself as a Bennett nocker, in fact I have always believed this group of payers have great prospects if we stick with them
But on Saturday he was an absolute lability, some of the silly things he was doing were just mindless in a important game like it was,
I'm all for sticking with the youngsters but if he plays like that again he could cost us our premiership place, nothing to do with ability, just stupidity in his case
I know you are like me a Lambert lover, but how you can say 'he didn't do too badly' against Norwich when he was a disaster just waiting to happen is beyond me
-
When Bennett has a bad one, he has a nightmare.
Having said that, i think he has played well recently. He plays well for me when he starts well, played well against Walcott, and Lennon in the 1st game.
He is only 21, and it is first season in the Prem.He has pace, good feet, good cross, he lacks concentration, and strength, they will both come. The comparisson with him and ACole is a good one, he has the same strengths/weaknesses as ACole, and if he turns out to be half the player of him, then i will be pleased.
Thought Eric played well when he came on Sat as well.
-
I am a fan of Bennett and think he will be a quality player for us , however he was poor at Norwich and could have been sent off .
-
He gave awqy a lot of silly fouls and was lucky to stay on, but then he was targetted areially and did well to compete. We defended pretty well on Saturday, largely because we had too given how we kept giving it away.
-
I think both full backs suffer from Lambert insisting we play very narrow in defence thus inviting the ball to the wingers who have time and space.
-

I don't think we gave it away a lot, Norwich were playing five across the middle and at times we were outnumbered.
I thought both Bennett and Benteke were singled out on Saturday. They'll be come wiser players for it though.

Another point is how injury prone Teflon Ron and Baker are. I do think Baker has come on well these last couple of months, I much prefer him in central defence to Clark.
-
I think he might be ok in time, but we could do much better. Danny Rose for one would be a young but significantly better option.
-
Danny Rose will not be better than Bennett. I think Bennett has a lot of potential, but like Baker needs to work on his positioning.

Which Danny Rose? You can't mean the one who is woefully out of position for Sunderland so often.

Woefully out of position? Would be a step up in our back 4 then!

He's being quoted as £8m - is he honestly that much better than Bennett? Given that he's played about twice as many games in the premier league? He strikes me as another in a long line of player who seem to be rated by villa fans almost immediately after they score against us.
-
Rose had been sunderland's player of the season.
I think he'll be back at WHL along with Andros Townsend. They need both players at the moment.

Yes but in a side that are worse than us. I agree we need to look at an option at left back as Bennett is very hit and miss so far, I just don't think £8m on a player who is barely an upgrade is even worth discussing. Very average player as far as I'm concerned, with pretty much the same strengths and weaknesses as Bennett.
-
Townsend is a good player, impressed me with QPR.
Wouldn't mind him coming in as a pacey wide option.

He's looked ok in the worst side in the league, for a handful of games. Nothing more or less, I wouldn't go there personally, I think there are much better options around.

Disagree Paul. He looked a real threat every time I have seen him play this season, including against us. I'm sure his form this season will bump his asking price up to a level where there are probably better options around. I would love us to sign Dries Mertens from PSV, who is the latest off the seemingly endless quality Belgian players. Plays on either wing and has a very good scoring record. Probably out of our league though at the moment.
-
I think Bennett is slowly getting to grips with the Premier League but like all young players will let himself down with silly tackles every now and then. I thought he was superb against the Black Cats last Monday, best game in a Villa shirt so far. I'd be happy for Villa to stick with him. He will have learned an awful lot from this season and will be stronger next season. That said, if someone much better became available, liek most players, I'd drop him like a shot to improve the side.

Agreed, he was really good against Sunderland, then followed it with a shocker against Norwich. He still needs to do a lot of work, but there is a player in there somewhere
-
A shocker? I think he learnt a lot in that game, up against the Gorillagram that is Holt. I thought Norwich did a good job in trying to isolate him and get at him. Lucky to stay on pitch, but i think the experience will do him well, especially after playing so well against Sunderland. As for the pen? he fouled outside the area, and was no longer fouling when they got in the box. For me, a poor decision
-
I heard that one on MOTD - that he was 'lucky to stay on the pitch'. He was just giving as good as he got against a dirty forward, who was also sly enough to get the fouls.
-

This is true, but Grant Holt is officially liked by the media so they were always going to round on Bennett. That said, he probably was lucky to stay on the pitch, but we've had our fair share of bad luck so I suppose there is a certain degree of evening-out here.
We should reserve judgement until next season at least, certainly. Of our young players, he's among the youngest, and clearly has enough talent to deserve some time to settle in.
-

His arm was still wrapped around Snodgrass while Snodgrass was on the area. It was a perfectly legitimate penalty.

If the offence starts outside the box and carries on inside the box, then it's not a penalty.

If the offence starts outside the box and carries on inside the box, then it's not a penalty.
If a defender starts holding an attacker outside the penalty area and continues holding him inside the penalty area, the referee must award a penalty kick

Interesting that dave, I wasn't aware of that law .
-
I wouldn't worry - it would appear that Joe Bennett wasn't either!
-
Personally I dont see him good enough as a left back. At 23 his positional play lacks discipline and is shocking. Witness him run away from the man and on to goal line rather than close a player down. Watch as he lets players cut inside or run round him. Numerous occasions of shirt pulling. I think he will never play for anything than a lower half prem club and can be a squad player or stop gap at best. Granted he has some movement on the rare occasions he moves forward to the other half ..and has a left foot which can produce some nice balls. Needs to show lowtons application getting forward and back. The guy lacks confidence. I support him but think he is not really the standard. I worry how he ll be against chelsea Saturday.
-
23? No way, i thought he was about 14, 15 tops. Dave, you may well be right, i thought his arm was away from him once they crossed the line, and he wasnt "fouling" him then, and the momentum took them both down. At worst it equals up that fucking Saints penalty
-
I wouldn't worry - it would appear that Joe Bennett wasn't either!
What a silly law. Great spot, but if a guy slides on someone outside the box but their movement takes them in, it is a free kick outside. The foul, in my view, should be where it starts, not where the attacker fancies falling over.
-
Teams keep targeting him which makes his job even harder. Still I am not sure what the alternative right now.
-

What a silly law. Great spot, but if a guy slides on someone outside the box but their movement takes them in, it is a free kick outside. The foul, in my view, should be where it starts, not where the attacker fancies falling over.
In your example then it is free-kick. If it's a foul outside and the attacker falls inside then it's not a penalty.
However the FIFA law (and what happened on Saturday) is just a sensible application of the advantage rule. Carry on playing to see if the attacker can get an advantage - and if the defender is thick enough to still be trying to foul him once he is in the box then the advantage worked and it's a penalty. If there's no advantage then bring it back for a free-kick.
-
Fair play - I wasn't aware of that. Is it a new rule change?
However, I do think it's daft. Two reasons:-
1. Does it now benefits the player to keep going and fall in the box, thereby promoting diving? If he can stay on his feet as he runs into the box, why does he then fall once he crosses that line?
2. The advantage rule brings the play back to the pojnt where the foul first occurred, not where the ball was when play is stopped.
-
The penalty was for pulling the player down not holding him. i'm sure that's what i saw friend mouthing on the MOTD highlights - they're still on-line so could be checked. If so, then it was a free-kick. The only foul commited was outside the area. His arm was still around Snodgrass (as was Snodgrass's around Bennett) but no foul was being committed. As it is its a moot point.
What isn't, and where Freind should be congratulated (I think he was the ref) is this
http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/afdeveloping/refereeing/law_12_fouls_misconduct_en_47379.pdf
he decided that the foul(s) were careless and not reckless and so he didn't warrant any further cards. the one he did receive did fit the reckless category.
-
Peter, I dont think he should have received a yellow for the pen. I think he was lucky to not get a second yellow in the first half when he was attempting to wrestle shirts off Norwich players. But im bloody glad he didnt, and i have seen far worse this year, especially in shirt pulling that has gone unpunished. (doesnt mean it is right though).
-
Oh and moving on, just holding a players shirt does not warrant a yellow. For it to be a caution the player being held must be being denied gaining possession of the ball or an advantageous position. In the case of Bennett holding Holt's shirt in the first half neither of these applied and so, again, the ref was right to not book him.
you have to respect the fact that the ref has not come out - not that they can - after hearing criticism directed at him bu Hughton and others and say simply that the Narrchhh manager should learn the rules before commenting.
After reading that link you have to say the blind useless bastard was pretty much spot on.

Point 1 is what I was trying to get at, if Bennett starts holding or grabbing outside the box, but Snodgrass basically runs past a line and flops down just to get a penalty it is not right, it should, for me still be a free kick. The advantage rule goes back to the original infringement in other areas, so should here too?
Also, Bennett was not being thick by still holding on, by the time he was in the box Bennett had lost footing completely from his initial attempt to get the ball, he got a little but not enough, and was a passenger. Not sure he could have not been holding by then. Still a free kick for me.
-
It feels disloyal saying it, however, I hope he is the one Lambert signing that is replaced. It is no coincidence that he is targeted.
Part of me gives him allowances for being new to the league, but a lot of his errors are ones that should have been ironed out.
Squad player.
-
Tha laws of the game have been constantly flouted as far as shirt pulling and obstruction especially in the penalty box, if refs had penalised it when it started to become a problem we wouldn't have a wrestling match at every corner kick. The other one that annoys me is when a defender throws his arm in front of a player trying to get past him, obstruction again when did arms become part of a tackle?
-
I know he didn't get a yellow for the pen Moet - and reading those FIFA foul rules he was yellow carded correctly, and penalised without a card correctly, also. It is possible to consider persistent fouling but that is usually over a short space of time. I'm sure the ref mau have had a word along the lines of 'you're trying my patience, son' - but nothing else warranted a second yellow.

Attempting to gain an unfair advantage by foul means is as old as the game, but this irritatingly girly practice of blouse pulling wouldn't even be tolerated on a netball pitch. Now that it has been allowed for long enough to be accepted without punishment, a pre-season announcement to the effect that it will be punished on every occasion is the only way to remove this blight from the game.
Alternatively, teams could follow the rugby fraternity and wear body hugging shirts, perhaps coated in grease.
-
Pulling of shirts help the attacking player get in a position to dive to, so body hugging shirts would help stop that too.
Back to Bennett, I like a lot of things about him. I think his biggest failings are all things he can improve (reading the game, understanding a bit more about the players he is up against). Im not saying that he is the next Bale or Ashley Cole, but they were both pretty green in the equivalent positions early on. Johnson and Assou Ekotu both still are making the failings that Bennett makes. Cant fault his application, effort, and promise going forward. He can already cross better than Adam Johnson (as can my two year old daughter)
-
Dunne would look good in a body hugging shirt
-
Dont know if anyone can be bothered to work this out or try and guess how many points would we be on if bennet hadnt played any games and we had replaced him with say a chair or a cardboard cut out?

Just worked it out, we'da won La Liga.

I give him all my support v chelsea and intrigued to how he will cope defensively. I think he ll be a disaster waiting to happen and that he hasn't learnt from last week. Villa concede most pens in league and Chelsea had most given. I dont see Bennett changing to competent defender in 6 days. Heres hoping his errors dont cost us if he is picked from start. I will only return to this thread before seasons end if im proved wrong as my feelings are clear on how he's sub standard. Will applaud him tommorrow as hes one of us and is far better than warnock so that's something ! Up the villa
-
I don't want to upset anyone considering the game tomorrow but he is garbage.
Not strong enough and rugby tackling players who are strong enough is not on.
-

He only went and bloody did it. Well played Joe, and in just 6 days too.
-
His best game for the club today I reckon
-
Great game by Joe today, well done
-
Bennett was superb today .
-
Another player who is learning all the time and I've been a big critic of his. He'll get better, but we need proper competition for him from a more experienced and complete LB. We absolutely need to keep faith with these kids because they will come good with the right support.
-
He was very good today.
-
Yes, a great performance from Bennett today. Credit where credit is due.
-
He had a good game,i always seem to jinx them! ;D
-
Ive slagged him off from day one but he did have a decent game today. Only thing is for me, you need to back them up with 10-20 games throughout the season not 2 or 3.
Still not sure about him so ill make my judgement next season...thats if we havent bought another left back.
-
Credit where it's due - Bennett was very solid today. Hopefully with experience he'll maintain this sort of standard more consistently.
-
I was very impressed today with him, Delph (probably my MOTM) and Sylla.
-
As I said about Delph a few months back, Bennett's biggest problem this season has been fitness. He joined with an injury, got that vile gash to his leg after a few games and has had a couple of knocks since then so he'd never really had a run of games to find his feet and learn how to play in this league. Since then he's had a good run in the side and has looked better and better. A good pre-season with the squad and I think he can be just as effective as Lowton is on the right. Both of them need to get a bit stronger and not get bullied under cross-field balls but if we can get that right and get the defensive side in general more organised there's a lot of quality there.
-
Very good game today.
Chelsea targeted him a lot today with little throughballs round the back of the defence and also a few high crosses but he dealt with them well.
Still would like us to pick someone like Riise up on a one year deal to keep him on his toes and to come in when his form dips.

We need competition on both sides but I think it's genuinely as competition rather than as replacements.
-
Excellent today. Thought he read just about everything chelsea tried, and his covering behind the centre-halves was impeccable. Always made himself available, overlapped, pushed forward, triangles, never looked panicky in possession. I recall a single misplaced pass, second half, when under little pressure. Tiny, tiny blot on a good day's work.
And have the defence been practicing headers? Good to see them all getting some distance on them.
-
Bennett was excellent.
I, for one, have never slagged him off. You can see that there's a player in there, he just needed time to adjust.
-
I like him. He's got a lot going for him going forward, and while he's shaky defensively he is having the occasional very solid game. He's got alot of work to do, hopefully a full pre-season and less injuries/suspensions and he'll add some consistency. Probably needs to bulk up a bit too.
-
Played very well yesterday - his overall contirbution was good and his positioning / covering was better.
He's clearly still developing, and learning on the job in the P'ship is a tough call.
I expect him to be a significant player next season.
-
He's had to play every game which has'nt helped. He's had his nightmarish games, Bradford away being the main one that springs to mind but overall he's been ok.
-

Big factor too for me, I like the guy and want him to do well. You feel yourself rooting for him

I think that goes for the whole team. They almost human compared to most footballers.
-
I honestly think that had he scored in either of our last two home games, we'd be blowing the transfer kitty on a new roof.
-
Bennett has apparently deleted his twitter due to abuse from fans. Just want to say, if any of those fans read this, fuck off and delete your own twitter.

Agree, Bennett has really improved since he got fit and had a run in the team and he'll continue to do so. 80-90% of Twitter appears to be a forum for absolute morons, who are cowards and have no morals at all.
-
He's the youngest of Lambert's Lambs, so we need to give him perhaps even more time than the others. That said, he's had some real brain-attacks this season.
-
Bennett tends to do mistakes occasionally which some has cost goals but he also does some great interceptions or tackles like saved us from almost certain goal against Wigan but also let them score their first goal.
I can see decent or good player in him if he learns from the mistakes and progresses as player.

The internet forum that the club run also gets visited and 'contributed' to by quite a lot of absolute plebs. If they failed to communicate they would get slagged off. When they open a line of communication, they also get abuse.
I have got plenty of time for Joe Bennett and expect him to come good over the next couple of seasons.

In terms of age he's not, he's 23. However I do think he'll come good, he has talent.

Bloody hell, so he is. I had it in my head from somewhere that he was about 20. Probably because he really looks young.

I thought he was 15 and still on a youth contract.

I think Lowts and Bennett both need to bulk up a little. They've got to add some upper body strength, but without sacrificing their pace.
I also think our young full backs will benefit from us signing a really decent center half who can organise things. We need a new Laursen. He always seemed to get the best out of his defensive team mates, keep them in line.
If we can get a sort of Tony Adams figure who can dish out the odd verbal ass kick when one of the lads falls asleep a bit, it will really help the team. We hoped Vlaar would be that, but he isn't. Vlaar himself would benefit from a really dominating defensive partner too.

I agree, but I also feel that Vlaar could be that player.
We have to remember that it was his first season in the Prem, too, with the added pressure of the captaincy it probably wasn't easy for him either.
-
I like that when Vlaar has been poor or at fault, he does not make excuses and holds his hands up.
As for Bennett on twitter, if Villa fans have made him quit they should be ashamed.

This is becoming more and more true. People hear about cyber bullying on Facebook, but Twitter appears to be getting far worse.

the problem with Twitter is that it allows even the biggest bell ends to participate.
-
Not Villa, but the death threats Rooney got for handing in a transfer request after being dropped at man u would seem to suggest that some people are misusing twitter / their life.
-
Its a relief to read James nursey in mirror talk of Lambert looking for full backs one to compete with Bennett i imagine. There's also a mention for an experienced centre half.
-
Looks like the boss is expecting Joe to come back into the fold.
I can see him coming good next season.
-
His last game for us if I remember rightly against Chelsea he played really well and deserved to keep his place imo but the next game lambert went back to Bertrand.
I think there's a player there that could benefit from a bit of Sherwood's coaching.
-
I seem to remember he had a decent cross on him and was decent going forward, but highly suspect defensively.
Which means, on recent evidence, Timbo will love him.

wasnt the whole point of Twitter when it started, that it was meant to be a forum of free speech for the world ( in 120 characters? Or less)? I am on it, but rarely post. Yes, you'll get a lot of dickheads posting nasty stuff on it, but isn't it reflective of the world in which we live? Something like h&v I'd argue is different, as its essentially a single interest forum, so can we can afford to have rules of conduct etc. Twitter though, fuck it, if you don't like what's posted, don't go on there. That's my view- not saying it's right or wrong, just my opinion.
-
Is there any feedback on how he's done at Brighton?
He's got quality but he's so bad defensively he makes Richardson look solid
I still want a new left back and there are a few signs that we won't be signing too many players? Might be reading too much into things tho
-
I think Sherwood would be surprised and delighted to have a left-back such as Bennett on the books. With our diamond (ish) formation we rely on our wing-backs and bennett has the ability to cause teams problems down the left - which is the side we are very strong on as it is. Yes defensively he can be suspect but haven't we said that about nearly every full-back that has played in England over the last 20-30 years or so? Save the top players us and every club have full backs that also get tagged with - 'good going forward defensively suspect'.
-
Judging from the OS picture that popped up on Facebook, he's aged a bit. I do hope he's wiser, too. The lad had quick feet. If he's back in the side come August, I reckon we might finally be able to end our eternal search for a left back! Work your magic, Tim.

Back when both he and Gardner were on loan there, I went over to NSC every few weeks or so to get an update. From what I recalled, Gardner was generally regarded as gash, while Bennett was regarded as fairly serviceable, good going forward but suspect defensively. After GG returned from his loan, I decided there wasn't really any point in looking for updates on just one player who might not even have a Villa future, so I don't know what he was like under Hughton.
-

Agree.
I always liked him, you could see there was a player in there.
He and Lowton were both excellent crossers of the ball, both excellent going forward but both struggled defensively.
Joe proved in the later stages of last season that with a bit of help from a defensive midfielder he could cope.
Interestingly, Gary Gardner was playing DM at Forest, and doing it very well by all accounts.
Apparently, Tim has been impressed with both JB and GG since they returned to Villa Park

Without wishing to be unkind, on the times I saw Brighton on TV, Bennett looked like he was at his level.
-
I'm finding it hard to completely write off any player who underperformed under Lambert, given how little he got even out of our good players.
On that basis I'd like to see Bennett given a chance at least. He's certainly got some of the qualities (decent enough on the ball, can cross) to be an attacking fullback, but it remains to be seen if some defensive ability can be coached into him.
-
Defensively, our full backs are our biggest problem. Bacuna and Richardson can't defend.
Very rarely do you get a fullback who can attack AND defend. They usually either do one or the other.
For as long as I can remember we've had ones that are better defensively, so it's been great to see us finally go for attacking full backs.
Would Joe Bennett be any worse than Richardson? If people keep off his back at the smallest of mistakes (which Richardson has made plenty of, and rightly doesn't get a slating for it during the match), then I don't think he'd be any worse.

Yes, I think that's a touch harsh ;)
You have to ask, did he struggle because of the way Lambert set things up?
You could say the same about 90% of the team under Lambert, but Tim's got them playing at another level.
He deserves the opportunity to prove himself again.
-
I never rated him after seeing a few of the roastings he got live at Villa Park, however, as these were under some of the darkest hours of Lambert's reign I am more than happy for him to be given another go.
-
I didn't mind Bennett as much as some did, I often wondered if he was worth a punt in midfield.
-

I thought about a back 3/5, with Bennett as left wing back and Lowton or Baccuna as right wing back.
Along the lines of:
Guzan
Okore Clark Baker
Sanchez/Westwood/Gardner
Lowton/Baccuna Bennett
Cleverley Delph
Greilish
Benteke
-
Can't see sherwood playing a back three
-
I reckon that team would win the league, Matt ;)
Seriously, though, to be honest, neither can I, this team was just a thought.
-
Why would we change the teams shape to accommodate Joe Bennett?
-
It wouldn't be to accommodate Joe Bennett, it would be so that there'd be less angst about starting two non-defending FBs.
-

The other thing about Bennett's time in our first team is that the CB weren't particularly good in supporting the FB. With the inprovement in Clark, Bennett might well look like a decent LB.
Re 3-5-2, I actually think we've got the players to be very good in that set-up. Remember, Vlaar looked at his best in a 3-at-the-back formation for The Netherlands. With Clark nad Okore either side and Bennett and Bacuna wide, it might well be very effective.
-
If Joe Bennett is in the squad next season I hope we have a very solid LB that he is back up to. Because right now he's at very best a back up.

Potentially true. It's all conjecture at this point as Lambert's shadow looms large over so much of all their Villa careers. One thing that I am pretty sure about is that none of Bennett, Luna, Stevens or Rico are as good as Bertrand was for us so I'd be looking at a new LB even if we hold onto Bennett/Rico.

Bertrand had a good debut but quickly went to crap under Lambert. It was incredible how a guy could have quite a good eye for a player and then how quickly he could make them look crap.

Perhaps we should have employed lambert as chief scout during the oneill years!
-
Anything but coach/head coach/manager.
-
I'd have him back as a scout now!
-
Do we know what's happening with Joe Bennett ?
I see that he's no longer shown on the Pravda squad page

Hindsight being a wonderful thing and all that, I'm sure you wouldn't mind revisiting that post Tom. ;)

I'm surprised Boro haven't come back for him. He was highly regarded there.
-
Probably the worst of Lambert's first signings. He demonstrated good attacking skills on a few occasions but his defending was largely woeful. It's a shame because I had quite high hopes for him when he first came.
-
I cor help but like him and want to do okay, whether for us or someone else.

He wasn't really regarded that well up there to be honest. My family is from Middlesbrough and they always said he wasn't good enough.
Saying that I like him for some reason, if you could get him really confident, I think he could be ok.

I think with all honesty its because he's a nice looking chap that people may want him to do well.

A more likely explanation is that he always tries his best which has been appreciated by Villa fans since I started going in 1966. Before somebody says isn't this the case for all fans, I would say not and resoundingly so in the case of Spurs, for example.
-
Never thought he was good enough from his early games like Fulham away and Norwich at home which was a total car crash. Even in his early games he kept on getting injured aswell which was a theme.
On the other hand I liked Lowton and thought he was someone who could be worked on but ultimately his lack of recovery pace meant this level was probably a bit beyond him.
I haven't seen him at all in the Burnley squad so far, is he injured?

No. Its because he's gorgeous.

I know you like him. Probably the quiff reminds you of James Dean.

If you could get him confident, he'd be confident. Still crap at football though.
-
I bet he still has nightmares about 4th Division wingers ripping him to pieces....
-
Thought he'd left?

Not that highly regarded, a mate of mine from Redcar reckoned Friend who they replaced him with was better anyway.

Bournemouth lost two left-backs to injury at the weekend and sign Joe Bennett on loan as a result.

At least we know who to target when we play them. Traore against Bennett = red card within the hour.

He won't be able to play.
-
I doubt if he would be eligible to play against us as it is a loan deal.

Ughh, good point. I'd have written it into the loan that he could.
-
According to the rolling Sports Bar on BT Sport, Bennet signed a one year extension before going out on loan.
Not seen that reported elsewhere.
-
He has.
-
Still think there's a good player in him, just shot of confidence, which in turn was not helped by some of our fans who decided he was going to take the stick for the team being shit over the years.
Hopefully he plays and does well for them.
-
He has.
see what happens when you score a lovely and very timely goal in the league cup. A bit like if as a manager you get 10 points in 4 games...
-
i think Bennett is a good prospect, he showed this in a few games.
I hope he does well there and comes back ready.

Agree.
I hate negative fans.
-
Don't rate him, If I'm honest I'm happy he's not playing any games for us.
Was interested if he'd actually play for Bournemouth but seems Tyrone Mings did his cruciate so he looks like he's out for the season.
-
Makes sense as he was in the last year of his contract. If does ok for Bournemouth we either have a 'new' player to come back, or more likely, a couple of million in the bank from selling him.
I've said before I can't help but like him, so hope he does okay there.
-
He needs a better hairstyle. Only if you are good should you be allowed to get a noticeable bonnet. Like our Jack.

Shame as Traore vs Bennett might have rather enjoyable.

Have to agree and I'm surprised he got another Premier League club. I would like to see Bournemouth move him further up the field into a wide position and see how he does as I think his defending is not up to top flight standard.

I think having him go out on loan to another Premier League club is most beneficial for us. I'm as surprised as anyone that there was a suitor, but if he can get more games at this level and come back better for it then fantastic.
-
Another good bit of business. At long, long last we have stopped behaving like benevolent society.
-
I think it's odd we've loaned a player to one of our rivals
-
well it's not as if we've lent them Adama. The clue's in the name I think. Great bone structure though.

Absolutely, but like you, I was surprised that a PL club was interested.

Indeed! I like Bennett and I think with a bit more experience he will be a good player for us.
-
The guy is 25 not proved capable defensively and only of use at championship level. Now he signed up to Bournemouth due to their left back crisis think he's not prem quality and Sherwood seems to think this giving him out to a newly promoted side as back up and cover to play. Good luck to him but he's done little suggest he would be better than Richardson, lescott even Clark or illori at left back.
