Is it too early in the season for a game to be a "must win"?

It certainly feels like a must win.

I can't believe Bannan and Albrighton are not in to be honest. One can pick a pass and the other can cross. Heskey and Gabby should be out for them 2 to come in and give Bent some supply.

Yes but we have a manager who has been relegated twice in 3 and a half seasons remember.....

All those goals we scored and chances we created last week have obviously steered you in the right direction.

I hope that Gabby can get off to a scoring home start to the season and he can get back on track after last-years blip.

We could have been far more attacking with our line-up if we wanted. Still, lets see how we do.

Post by: taylorsworkrate on August 20, 2011, 02:42:12 PM
I'd expect to beat Blackburn at home easily enough. (for me the worst team in the league outside of the promoted clubs)

So i'd hope we'd try and play with a bit of ambition, a bit of creativity.  We have players in the squad who can do that.

For me, Makoun is one of the only players in our entire squad who can actually pick a pass. If we're looking to get it down and pass it, he'd be a decent shout.

No I hadn't noticed. I had noticed that he adds something positive both creatively and in the tackle.
Based on your previous comments, you seem to have a somewhat idiosyncratic opinion; fair enough/

So all the talk about having creativity with Ireland, and him getting another chance is nonsense then.  If he's not playing, it'll be the same as last time, and he'll not be interested.  Should be playing today, we need far more guile than we'll get from tumbling bear and Gabby.

Depends entirely on what you want from him.  If you view him as a replacement for NRC then you'll be let down.  He is a good passer of the ball though and because he has the ability to knock it about without having to take six touches to control it, that opens up space for other people.

It's not like we'll be needing midfielders who keep possession, so it's no surprise McLeish wants him out the door.

And it's not defeatism, vfl. We may well win, but it's the manner in which it'll be acheived that's getting people's backs up.

Same.

I'm not going to another home game until either he's out the door or changes his approach. Thing is, I was relatively impressed by McLeish during preseason. This has come as a bit of a slap in the face.

It is literally Heskey's presence in the side over Bannan/Ireland that I don't understand. As that shows, we have real talent and quality, but putting Heskey in their is a deliberate and huge sacrificing of skill and vision for strength and power, which affects our whole strategy and is seriously disappointing.

To be honest, since the opening exchanges we've passed the ball pretty nicely. It looked doom-laden with the first hoof, but we do have some really good footballers and they've combined nicely. We'll need more against better teams (Rovers are rubbish and may go down), but fair play for the style. We're boofing it less and less each second, and it's getting rewards.

Our shape's very open
Absolutely - it will be a real problem against a decent team.

Still, that's 3 halves of football without conceding a goal now.  Not often last season we could say that.
True - but let's see if we play the same formation against a decent side.

Hey, no problem with the formation, a good 4-2-3-1 with options on the ball. I just question opting for Heskey in the central attacking midfield role who, in spite of his goal, has been far from impressive. However, Delph, Petrov, Gabby and at times N'Zog have been very good.

you think heskey could get in any of the top 4 teams-he had international caps , hes 33 now are far past his best -watched villa for over 30 yrs pal and had season ticket for most so i think i know about football and heskey could certainly not hold a place in any premiership team now-utterly laughable.

I think Heskey could easily make it into a "top 4" club, the reason why he hasn't is because we are good at keeping our best players.
