A win today could see us move up 6 places into the top 9 and only 4 points behind spurs so this IS a huge game -players coming back into fitness and the transfer window almost here- things may not be as bad as some think!

Friedel; Lichaj, Cuellar, Collins, Warnock; Albrighton, Delph, Hogg, Downing; Agbonlahor, Heskey.

Subs: Guzan, Pires, Delfouneso, Petrov, Reo-Coker, Clark, Bannan.

To be fair I think if Delph needs to come off NRC is his replacement. Delph needs games to get fit.

In the long run Delph is our way forward not NRC, and lets face it we aint in the running for top spot are we.

Strong bench - petrov or nige for hogg and we would look pretty solid- interesting to see how this team plays without ash as it could soon become the norm.

Strange one yes. Maybe Nige isn't quite fit enough yet, but then again, Delph is playing.
Hoggy has been playing well mind you, so deserves to keep his spot to be fair.

It's a gamble playing Delph this soon, so hopefully it pays off.

2 up front is good to see. We need goals.

Friedel; Lichaj, Cuellar, Collins, Warnock; Albrighton, Delph, Hogg, Downing; Agbonlahor, Heskey.

Subs: Guzan, Pires, Delfouneso, Petrov, Reo-Coker, Clark, Bannan.

ridiculous team selection, plus a bench with four midfielders. If this goes pear shaped today........

NRC came on against Albion and did'nt over impress tbh.Hogg had a good game.

Delph could be one of the best players in the league, and if the manager thinks hes fit then good.

Creativity comes from Albrighton and Downing.

Going to have a go by the look of it, and bothe their FBs are weak.Quite happy with the team tbh.

I'm hoping with Heskey playing so well, he can get the best out of Agbonlahor. There could be a very good partnership there. We'll see.

Hmmm. Delph coming straight back in is a bit of an odd one. I can see the logic in Hogg being in ahead of NRC but I would think that playing 4-4-2 is a bit of a recipe for disaster against Spurs midfield 5. I'd have perhaps put NRC in ahead of Gabby to shore up the midfield.

Jesus. We're gonna get murdered. I'd always had Arry down as a 4-4-2 kind of guy. There's a big onus on Hogg to look after Modric and VDV. Delph is more attack minded. I don't ever see Delph being a water carrier in any way shape or form. He can't tackle for starters. If we don't get the front foot, then this could go pear shaped and Delph could disappear.

Personally against that Spurs mid, I'd have playing Coker, Hogg and Delph, and kept Gab on the bench.

And bearing in mind Fabian likes to collect a card or three of varying colours, quite frequently.

dont get what the issue is with the midfield.  NRCs whole game is built around him running around closing down opposition players- he uses his speed, strength and fitness to win the ball. take that away and he is pretty useless- he cant run with the ball, he cant pass very well, he cant create and he cant shoot.

given NRC is not going to be match fit id rather have hogg in DM, and hogg is better on the ball as well.  and although Delph probably wont be that match fit either, at least he can control the ball and do something with it.

its an attacking line up and fair play. we are at home we have to go for it- spurs defence isnt that great and if we sit back they will just run rings around us

Got a feeling Spurs may score more than the Aussies did this morning with that midfield 'match up'.  A hammering is on the cards here and no mistake.  What is Houllier doing?
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Tottenham Hotspur Match Thread
Post by: TheSandman on December 26, 2010, 05:17:42 PM
It's a shame. I really don't think that is the right team and a team that will be capable of beating Sperms. On that we will see I suppose.

A win would really hit the spot as we would pull well out of trouble. Up to ninth and maybe collecting another three points against Sunderland will provide us with a healthy cushion before some tough fixtures.

Palacios is a water carrier but Delph and Hogg wont be able to hold Modric and Van der Vaart in particular. NRC would be perfect for today and its insane that he hasnt been selected. There was an argument for bringing Petrov in too with Heskey up top by himself.

Lennon v Warnock, Bale v Lichaj and with an extra body in midfield to ensure the 1v1s!!!. Thankfully they have gone with Defoe up top instead of the Russian. Defoe needs to play off a big man but will probably lash in a hat trick to prove me wrong.

Downing might have some joy against Hutton who isnt a great defender apart from that I dont hold much hope for today

Not sure about that red card. Modric and Van der Vaart have been mesmeric so far. Lichaj has started well on Bale. We are actually playing decent enough but Spurs look a different class at times going forward

The Spurs fan co-commentating wouldn't give a penalty for that either.

Nor did the ball go out of play for the first Spurs "goal".
And neither was it a pen for the foul on Heskey even though it was a foul.

I'd have put on NRC. Hogg and Delph's problem is not themselves but the fact they are outnumbered. I'd venture as far to say that Hogg has been pretty good and has moved the ball well.

Need an experienced head in there...a midfield four of Downing, Hogg, Delph and Albrighton is too inexperienced and lightweight. We're still in this game and should be looking for a point at least against ten man Spurs.

That last few minutes was painful, ten man spurs passing us to death. Hogg has to come off, he simply is not good enough for this level, he's a good trier but that is it. I think if we put Reo next to Delph and release Delph to be more attacking we'd be much better off.

Are Tottenham that good or are we that bad? Regardless of your views on how much they have spent we look like a team assembled for far, far less money than them which is not necessarily the truth.

I'm not enjoying this game. :(

We need to beef up our midfield. NRC or Stan should have come on rather than The Fonz. Hogg and Delph are suffering from the selection rather than their own deficiencies.

So far it's been a plain old outclassing, without Spurs actually having to shift out of 2nd gear, which is worrying.

The decision to put Hogg and Delph as a midfield 2 has out done anything O Neill ever dreamt up during his tenure! Fucking hell! Houllier is a bit of joke to be honest.
Lichaj has been a positive. I like the look of him and I think he's got the makings of an excellent fullback. With more experience he could be very good indeed for a few years.

Collins has been poor, and Warnock looks shaky.

Look at the turmoil when O'Neill fucked off. We'd have the same again. Meanwhile, a rudderless ship, we sink down the league.

All I'll say about Houllier at this point is he has tried to change things too quickly, particularly our style of play. Our lads are not comfortable on the ball. They are used to playing at a high tempo on the break and that's their strength. gradually change that but not overnight.

When I see Collins ad Cueller knock it around at the back I am nervous as hell because it looks like they have a hot potato and could drop it to an opposition player or play a bad backpass at any moment.

The last five minutes were pretty embarrassing but still in the game. I'd bring in Petrov for Hogg as you would hope with an extra man we will have more possession. Gabby hasn't tried since Heskey went off. Arm waving and pointing again. Needs to cut that out from his game. I'd like to see the Fonz play closer to goal and Gabby run the channels.
Hoping Spurs showboating comes back to bite them in the arse. Presume Lennon will make way for Crouch or Pavluchenko at the interval.

I think Gerard Houllier is a recipe for relegation at this rate.  And now we are going to give him money.  What if he makes such piss poor decisions in the transfer window (as he has made bad decisions all season) and then continues to do so when picking them in certain positions.  How can he explain Hogg/Delph in midfield today?  How?

I think Gerard Houllier is a recipe for relegation at this rate.  And now we are going to give him money.  What if he makes such piss poor decisions in the transfer window as he has made bad decisions all season and then continues to do so when picking them in certain positions.  How can he explain Hogg/Delph in midfield today?  How?

So you'd have the chairman sack him for playing Hogg and Delph in midfield?

I don't necessarily disagree with some of your comments about him, but we've a manager who has never had the option to buy his own players, and who is experiencing a rocky start.

We have to at least back him to do something in January.

We desperately, desperately need to start picking up points, and a lot more than we have done of late, though, you're right there.

I've missed Stan. Despite slagging him off on a regular basis since Jan. But in his absence, the heart has grown fonder. Much as he's not as good as he was, until his replaced, he's got to play when he's fit.

same here

We've now got two players in midfield who have only just came back into training. It won't help the problem as they are still outnumbered in midfield.

And I've always stuck up for Stan. He's been a big miss.

We really do have some drek in our squad, drek that when in O Neill's good books, out performed. They are not now sadly.

We desperately need some quality to go alongside our promising youngsters like Albrighton, Fonz, Delph.

This is embarrassing. Much down to the fact that O Neill could get so much more out of his first 11.

Why did we hire Houllier? He's so past it, it aint true!

Beginning to think that, and dread the thought, that Martin O Neill got the very best out of a very limited player in Gabby. He's done very little until that shot. This season when he's played, he's looked a shadow of the player last season. I know he's been injured, but it's scary how rusty he's looked, and surely by now he should be getting back to fitness by now.

Diving, petulant and hands always up. It's the same thing most of us complain about with Ashley Young.

Like many of you, no doubt, I am watching this humiliating pile of cack with a house full of family and friends. We ought to be able to claim compensation for emotional trauma from that useless *+=# Houllier.

Fancy over-reacting much?

We frustratingly lost a tight game due to them having one of the best players in the league in the right place twice.

I'd agree, but we also did nowhere near as much as we should have done against ten men.

Poor team selection. Too many crap senior players who don't want to give 100% for this manager, having overperformed for O Neill. The youngens can't hold it together alone.

Fuck me sideways!

Houllier out!
Get in a proper man manager, fuck, get in Big Sam. I don't care about ugly football, I want wins! Survival!

we're four points off the drop zone with Chelsea and Man city away and we get outplayed by ten men on our own pitch. I think fans should be allowed be annoyed tonight.

The end of this season can't come soon enough.

That's exactly what I thought 5 days BEFORE the start of the season.
