The deal was constructed that way by Liverpool to help us get around the financial restrictions last summer. Will be a long time I suspect before we have any transfer dealings with Liverpool again. Any club doing a loan agreement with us will be ultra cautious after our stunt here. Sure that's business I guess and Monchi takes the fall.

If Emery goes with a B team tonight then maybe Elliot gets a sympathy run out. No point playing Sancho again. Bailey possibly in the off chance he does something that might generate interest for him in the summer.

The whole deal intrigues me though, Emery cannot have signed off on it knowing the terms were what they were, evidently from how the season has gone, or if he did he very quickly made his mind up that it wasn't going to work.

Logic would suggest there's more to it than footballing reasons anyway. Elliot scored our first goal of the season at Brentford and came off the bench at Everton. Emery did give Elliot an unnecessary amount of grief post game after a dreadful team performance at Sunderland, he had only come on as a sub after all. That was very unlike Emery, unprofessional really. I'm not buying the sliding doors moment either in the following Fulham game with Buendia scoring off the bench with Elliot hooked at half time. If memory serves correct Buendia was harshly brought on and taken off at Brentford just before then and looked set to leave the club at all costs. Unlikely Emery decided there and then that Buendia was his man and Elliot was done.

My hunch, repeated here before, is that Elliot became victim to a power play at the club. Emery didn't want players brought in over his head again (likely he really wanted Asensio back but Monchi said no) and with Buendia's form improving the club decided they weren't going to give Elliot a chance to make the deal permanent.

If we get CL football, while under severe restrictions, it will be a fine achievement by Emery. The signings that didn't work (an increasing number) will be soon forgotten about.

I honestly think Damian/Monchi thought the loan with purchase deal was going to help with the accounts by pushing any transfer fee into the next years finances. However they didn't realise that UEFA make it a purchase on the date the conditions are met. I'm basing that on him appearing on the pitch regularly until the Athletic ran a story about that mid Sept. Once it was confirmed by the club then he suddenly was dropped to just bench and then not even in the squad.

I suspect Emery and Olabe then decided not to spend on him, especially after a quick go when we knew he was here all season back in Feb.

With that and potentially thinking we could make upto 5 transfers to the CL squad if we sold more starters (at least it appeared that way when we bought 5 and let go 5), I hope we finally have someone at the club who knows all the UEFA and FIFA guidelines, althugh the signing of Madjo seems to show that don't as of January.
