Not buying another RB and a central half is going to come back and bite I fear.

We’ve had a financial anchor around our neck for years now so we had to get rid of that. I think most of us get it. And the new rules protect those who have built a financial warchest. But in equal measure it feels hugely shit in that we have gone from possibly signing Joao Felix a few weeks back to nobody at all. Despite shipping out on loan two kids we signed from Juventus, Moreno, possibly Donck and sold Archer. I’m probably missing someone else. We will probably be fine because the squad depth is better and we have Emery. But right now, if nothing else happens, it feels quite empty that we couldn’t bring in one top talent to add to what we have.

Moreno has been replaced by Maatsen. That's a great swap.

Archer just wasn't going to play for us under Emery (or others previously) and wasn't in our squad anyway so isn't a loss (from where we were, rather than his potential).

Donck was out last season on loan, so if he goes it's a help for PSR, and no loss to the playing side, he's replaced by Onana.

We can argue the Diaby one, and Philogene hasn't shown he's as good, yet, but certainly shows the potential.

Whether Felix would have been seen as Diaby's replacement, or whether he'd have replaced Duran if he'd been sold, or if it was all just numbers, we don't know.

But there is depth, and a plan developing.

Back on Coutinho there were some very gushing comments when he signed - I have just looked at the thread some really funny in hindsight ones such as hoping this doesn't hamper Chucky's progress.  However I saw it all coming, this was my reply.

as I said the squad depth is fine. I'm concerned about RB with Cash out for a few weeks and we will turn to a very green 18 year old, or move Konsa there, out of his best position at CB and bring in Carlos. That's not ideal. But it was more a case of the genuine quality we could do with that a Felix type of player would have brought. To make the permanent step up it would help us to have more quality in the squad.

Some of the deals under Purslow's watch were pretty bad
Carlos for £30M
Coutinho however much we wasted on him .

No wonder he got his P45

did you complain about either signing when they happened?

I seem to recall the general feeling was what brilliant negotiators we were for reducing the fee from 33m to 17m. Don't remember many complaints.

There was complaints about the length of the contract though tbf

Decent squad player.  Good luck Philippe.
There was a lot more nuance in the Coutihno signing.  Whilst he didn't work out as a player, it was a huge statement from Villa and evidence of our owners ambition.  It probably played a big part in attracting the likes of Kamara to sign.

So, whilst nobody could argue it's been a success from a playing perspective, I do think it had a part to play in our evolution over the last few years.

You could argue he was our Robinho signing.

I was obviously being sarcastic in my original post on the signing.

True, it was instrumental in us getting Kamara if I remember correctly. That justifies it on its own.

Yeah, I don't know why people are racing to the bottom to prove how poor we are.

Indeed.

Emery himself namechecked Coutinho (amongst others) when he explained to the Spanish press why he was opting to join a club 15th in the PL at the time.

Coutinho spent his time injured that’s why he was a bad buy not because he was a useless player
Injuries can happen to anyone at any time, just bad luck I’m afraid

The defence is our achilles heel . Ship far too many goals which will again prove costly
