Btw, I was wrong about Rogers and may very well be wrong about Ned (although I'm only talking about readiness now, not long-term ability).  But yes, I'd be far happier if we had more depth and felt Geertruida would have been a great fit.  I also think Chalobah would be a really good fit for different reasons, but we're clearly not going there.

The more I think about this window the more I think Maatsen was a crazy signing.  He looks like an excellent player, but £37.5m on a position where we had such strength seems crazy in hindsight if we now can't work on areas of more need.

Hard to believe no one is after Zaha. Lyon are set to pay no loan fee and take on the 130k/wk.

Quote
Zaha is unlikely to return to English football this season due to UK tax rules for those who have left the UK to work abroad for five or fewer years. A loan move to England at this stage would make Zaha liable to pay income tax in both the UK and Turkey

So teams might be after him, but Zaha probably isn't really to hand over a few million pounds to HMRC to make it work.

How are we lighter in defence if we have lost Moreno and Lengelt, but gained Maatsen, Ned and Mings?

Last season we had four CBs to pick from pretty much all season, Kons, Pau, Carlos and Lenglet. Look at how many games Lenglet played for us from mid December, he was very much needed in the squad even if he wasn't that good.

Currently it's three and then you have Mings with no clear return date and Bogarde who last season was on loan at Bristol Rovers. If Mings wasn't fit enough to be considered in pre season I don't see him being available for many more months.

We have another 30 or so games to negotiate before January so I'm concerned we've left ourselves light as all it takes is one injury/suspension and the remaining two CBs will have to play.

Don't think anyone is coming so we have to hope for the best.

As good as unai is will be a tough ask to finish in top 4. Im thinking 6th or 7th is more realistic this year. Anything else would be a huge bonus

but we're planning long term and if the right player is available then you have to go get him i think. does also seem that moreno is pretty shot post injury. our winner against west ham is probably a very good example of why we bought him, that left hand side will be unreal when it clicks

I don’t know, on the Maatsrn signing I take it as a positive, it’s an investment in this year and future years so we aren’t just planning for today.  As much as we’d all like one today we aren’t making elastaplast signings there is a plan for us to be a force for years not a one off

Sancho and Osimen to Chelsea??

I'd take a late loan of Jackson. Good player.

Yep, I agree. I think our signings under Emery have mostly been about the mid-term rather than trying to buy in instant upgrades. The only short-term signings I can think of are Moreno, Lenglet and Barkley. Even players like Pau and Onana are, for me, about what they can become as much as what they offer 'now'.

There's comments about Juventus getting one over us but I think it's far too early to make that sort of statement, they both have plenty of potential and I don't think it's unrealistic to suspect 1 of them makes it with us and other gets sold for about what we paid for the pair.

Has Unai done his prematch press conf yet? Guess he will put lid on the window in that if he hasn’t already

Consider though that our opinions aren't informed ones. What if the physio and fitness departments are telling Emery and Monchi that they expect Mings to be fit enough to be starting games before December i.e. when Lenglet started to appear in the side.

And if Lenglet hardly featured before December, then by definition we were basically operating with 3 centre backs until December.

Then you talk about Bogarde being on loan to Bristol Rovers last season but he's a year older now with more experience and players can see spikes in their development. Emery's watched him over the summer and he's impressed. These players have to be given a chance at some point otherwise they'll only ever be any good as farming fodder.

Vidagany nailed it before transfer deadline day as Monchi executes perfectly

Here's a pretty good explanation by John Thornley off what we've done and not done in the transfer window.

It should quieten down the discord, but I doubt that it will.

That makes absolute sense - like Newcastle last year we are being penalised for crashing the cartel…rules again doing exactly what they are intended to do, so protect the cartel

Doesn’t mean I’m not clinging to the hope that if Donk gets loaned to Anderlecht coupled with Moreno going to Forest will create the ability to loan one in

We’ve had a financial anchor around our neck for years now so we had to get rid of that. I think most of us get it. And the new rules protect those who have built a financial warchest. But in equal measure it feels hugely shit in that we have gone from possibly signing Joao Felix a few weeks back to nobody at all. Despite shipping out on loan two kids we signed from Juventus, Moreno, possibly Donck and sold Archer. I’m probably missing someone else. We will probably be fine because the squad depth is better and we have Emery. But right now, if nothing else happens, it feels quite empty that we couldn’t bring in one top talent to add to what we have.
