But compared to last season's potential starters, we have only lost:

Luiz
Moreano

But added (or can now pick) - and whoever else comes in...

Ramsey
Buendia
Barkley
Onana
Maasten
Mings
Bidace (at a push)

I think regardless of all of those stats you would just want your overall team / squad to potentially be at least a slight improvement on the team / squad from the first half of last season. Continued improvement, and with a real need as we're now in the CL. If it is, we should in theory concede less and score more as a team.

Compared to the first half of last season we have:

Rogers
Maatsen
Onana
JJ
Kosta
Barkley
Buendia? - Depending on his recovery
Mings? - Depending on his recovery

and we've lost
Luiz
Diaby
Zaniolo
Lenglet
Kamara? - Depends when he's back
Cash? - Depends when he's back

I've ignored fringe players but there's always a chance that someone else will come through and have an impact as well.

and that ignores the potential for players to have improved after an extra year of working with Emery. I see nothing to suggest we're weaker than we were.

Sorry I missed Zaniolo (and Diaby)... Lenglet was 5th choice an I'm sure Bogarde would do as good a job.

I forgot to add Philogene so we're all guilty.

I ignored Moreno because he barely played before Christmas.

To be fair Paul i didn't say we were weaker, just pointing out what we should be looking to do in each transfer window. January will have took some pressure off this one as we have a real talent in Rogers, a very promising full back in Ned, although he's got some development to do first and i see little or nothing wrong with the young GK Guici as well, i'm a bit less worried about Olsen now we have him as well.
Starting line up 12 months ago;
Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Pau, Digne, Luiz, Kamara, McGinn, Bailey, Diaby, Watkins (based on 4-3-3)
Now, probably;
Martinez, Konsa, Carlos, Pau, Digne, Onana, Tielmans, McGinn, Rogers, Bailey, Watkins.

Not a lot to pick, maybe a bit weaker in defence with Cash out and Carlos in but we could rectify that with Gerty. The forward line as it stands is better courtesy of Rogers being ace and as long as the other 2 keep it up. Another quality forward to rotate though would be a lot better. Midfield, early signs say not much to pick. The bench is stronger now.

That’s a good summary, with added Philogene as you posted after.

Just to add, Gerty has potential to be a great signing as he’d replace Cash in the first team and Carlos & Donk in the squad.

Maybe Tielemans can take penalties.

Luiz scored more than pens and im pretty sure you know that 😁

4 of his 9 goals!

Even if 5 of those goals were pens - you still have to score 5 of them. Easier said than done

Sorry, should've specified that 4 of them were penalties.

And yes, Douglas Luiz is a good penalty taker. I'd just like to think he's not the only one in the whole squad.

No worries 👍

Youri is good at pens from what ive seen but i just think luiz has alot more to his game. He scores assists, can take desdly set pieces and brings alot on the pitch. Very difficult player to replace

If you tell me his last "deadly" set piece was? And he scores assists? New one on me.

When Mings and Kamara come back we've got:

Martinez/ Gauci

Cash/Ned
Konsa/Carlos
Pau/Mings
Digne/Mastsen

Kamara/Onana
Tielemans/Barkley

Bailey/Philogene
Rogers/Buendia
Ramsey/McGinn

Ollie/Duran

Plus: Bogarde, Olsen and Dendoncker (for now).
Add in a possible Gertie and a forward.

We're definitely stronger this season than last time out.

The goal each transfer window is to bring in players who've better than what you already have - be they first teamers, "squad" players or Academy/youth players.

Slowly, but surely we're achieving that.

Yep, The squad today is a lot strong than the one we had at the end of the summer 23 window and our biggest problem last season wasn't the quality of the first 11 but the drop in quality behind them when they were tired/injured/suspended. We've also added players who are at the start of their careers rather than at the end. This does mean that a few (Dobbin, Iling-Junior, Barrenechea) might need another year before they can come in and provide even more depth but I prefer that to adding lost of late 20s/early 30s players that we'd need to be looking at repalcements for within a year or 2 and that are a massive cash sink for the club.

I'd like Geertruida in and if we can add someone as a versatile forward (and this is a spot where I think an older player is a viable choice) then I'd say we've had a fantastic window and put ourselves in a really strong place.
