Unai only bought one of those players though Dem. And I think we were lucky that Saudi Arabia came calling for Diaby, because I think otherwise this year he'd have started to look like an expensive mistake.

D'oh your right mate 😂

Surely two - Tielemans and Rogers?

I was just talking about the players quoted.

Tielemans and Rogers are both on that list.

And while I agree with the thrust of Rob's overall point, I reckon most of those players had significantly increased in value before Emery arrived. Of those listed who were here before Emery, it's probably only Bailey who hadn't increased in value based on what they did under the two before him.

All of which leads me to think even if he signed LoCelso for example, he would get a lot more from him than we have seen at Spurs.

Re the Chelsea thing just being about a big roster and policy, it's a theory that falls apart when there is a 25 player limit in the prem and Europe. As such, you can't grow an asset that isn't playing to allow that growth, and the ones sitting on the sidelines can't roll on and off. They are not going to change squad sizes for Chelsea either.

The squad comparison with NFL teams is nonsense, NFL has two completely separate sets of players for defence and offence so the roster size will always be massively different.

Agree it is a nonsense but it’s something that shouldn't be surprised to come in. Like a European squad,  and a domestic cup squad and an overall squad

Some sort of variation to things now but already seen got round PSR so Squad size is already being manufactured and somewhat manipulated to suit.

There seems to be a media obsession with Chelsea atm, especially Sky, who look to be desperate to maintain them as a member of the Sky6.

Hypothetical question: If a club did have enough players to do it, could they name a completely different squad in UEFA competitions and another in the Premier League?

I'm pretty sure that you could do that,  I just don't imagine a player being content with this though.

The issue would be fulfilling the quota of homegrown players for European competitions I guess. There are also rules about how many loans a player can have within a certain period and that would be difficult to navigate. Especially for a club like Chelsea.

This is for the CL last year for example:

The tournament begins in summer with three qualification rounds, followed by a play-off stage before the top 32 teams of Europe begin their quest for glory. Thereafter, the teams are divided into eight pools of four each, with the top two from each group progressing into the knockout rounds.

The biggest clubs across the top European leagues compete for the marquee continental prize, with the finale usually taking place in late May or early June.

All the qualified teams have to submit their squad usually by the first week of September for all further matches from the group stages till the final.

GOAL tells you everything you need to know about the squad rules including the maximum number of players, homegrown quota & regulations.

How many players are in the Champions League squad list?
Each club must submit two lists of players to Uefa; List A and List B.

In List A, no club can have more than 25 players. However, a club can register an unlimited number of players on List B, who are born on or after January 1, 2001.

Moreover, since his 15th birthday, he must have played for the club for an uninterrupted period of two years, or a total of three consecutive years. He can have a maximum of one loan period to a club from the same association for a period not longer than one year.
