An Everton side with the 2nd lowest possession stats in the league and we're judging their midfield.

The best football we’ve played for decades was the first half of last season
Mainly a 433 or 4321

The midfield for the most successful looking midfield we’ve had was McGinn Luiz Kamara
I think most people would agree about that
One of those has gone and the other isn’t ready yet so we’re two down at the moment, hence replacements

I personally don’t think Tielemans and Barkley make up for that loss, but are certainly strong backups to use when needed
So we’ve bought in Onana for 50 million so he’s obviously looked at as a starter and maybe will be rotating others to see what the best mix ends up being

Edit - Forgot about Barrenncheaar he might fit in there as well

Onana is CLEARLY going to do the work that Kamara did before. I don't think he'll be quite as tidy on the ball, but I think he'll be stronger and better in the air, so swings and roundabouts. Then we'll have a choice of Tielemans, Barkley, Barrenechea and McGinn to play next to him as well. Plus Kamara back hopefully around Christmas. That looks very much like a midfield group that Emery can do something with to me. And importantly, it's four out of 5 players that Emery and Monchi have brought in, rather than players they've inherited.

Could Onana and Kamara play together or is it one or the other? Could either play alongside Barrenechea?

They could probably play together, but you would have to assume that's only going to happen if Unai is being ultra-conservative, or parking the bus.  Playing two defensive midfielders is the sort of thing you see with Gareth Southgate.

I think Onana is more dynamic than that and potentially become a box to box type midfielder.

Yeah but you know that under Unai the front four and one of the full-backs would be running riot in front of them, the sort of thing you definitely don’t see with Southgate.

Yep. It plays into Emery's need for flexibility so that he can adjust the tactics to the opponent. When we're playing a team that's going to dominate possession, it would pay to have a double pivot of players who can shield the back 4 and win the ball back when they can.

Good chance we'll start both against Real Madrid in the final.

Yeah, and then we can keep Bailey high on the right to murder their full back and leave Mbappe isolated and stuck in Konsa's pocket.

Nah...Emery will bring on Kamara as a second DM to see out the game. Somewhere around the 80th minute after Ancelotti has gone full Lambert and has 6 forwards on to reduce the 3 goal deficit.

They're going to be pretty annoyed on SHA when we beat St. Jude's team to win it.

I read on here someone comparing him to Patrick Viera, certainly has similar physical attributes. If he gets anywhere near that level I’d be delighted.

The way I see it too. Don't see him playing Kamara's role anyway. He has lots of talent and can get around the pitch. Dycheball etc but Gueye and James Garner aren't exactly dogs of war type midfielders like Fellaini and Gravesen were in the past. Surely with his physical attributes alone he should have been first choice ahead of them either way? Dobbin and Barkley are two very odd signings for different reasons too.
