Gonna be interesting to see what the first starting lineup is

I mean Barkley has gone from being an upgrade on Dendoncker to a permanent starting position depending on who you read
With all the new players be interesting to see how they will be used and fit in

I’m a bit of an old boy now, but can’t remember feeling this excited about a season for a long time

For my own purposes, sorry if self indulgent, but looking at the squad and the multiple positions some can play, with their respective back ups. Gives a sense of how versatile some players are and also the depth we have.

… Then we win the league.

I was doing this exercise too, thinking about the number of times where we’ll need to play two strong line ups in a week.

The only positions we can’t swap out ‘frontline’ players without a huge drop in quality is goalkeeper and striker -  that’s partly because the 1st choice is so good they’ll play as long as they’re fit.

Cast your minds back to some of the games in the later half of the season, the utter dominance and destruction of Arsenal aside, the squad was stretched, understandably.

You never know when injuries may strike, but that factor notwithstanding we'll have Barkley, Onana, Enzo and Emi to freshen up the midfield.

JJ, Emi, Illing and Philogene to boost the wide or 10 spots.

Mings, Illing, Maatsen, Ned to help out at the back. The squad is significantly stronger.

I think Diaby will be moved on but with Onana in we will be stronger. Maybe there’s a direct replacement for Diaby lined up if not, Philogene can step in and up.

Our bench was down to bare bones by the end of the season. And that’s with players playing with injuries that should have seen them rested but they played through. Throw in major international competitions on top of that, we will need the whole squad over the season. I want to be able to rotate the first XI without seeing significant drop off in ability and performance. Probably a few windows still away from that. But certainly we will be much stronger throughout the squad this season.

Diaby and Duran will be gone next week I reckon and £100m incoming for Emery / Monchi to grapple with .

I'd be surprised if Diaby went.

The old villa would have me being worried about the optimism being shown on this thread! That pessimism will take some time to dissipate

That’s understandable but Unai has not put a foot wrong since he arrived and I don’t see any reason why that should change.

I was reading an article today regarding a Duran replacement.
Two guys had their own idea one was Beier and the other Brobby (Ajax)

I remember him being a bit of a handful when we played them.
Different sort of player to Ollie and a bit of a beast, much the same as Duran,

I'd be annoyed if we sold Diaby. If we did, I reckon it would be more down to him wanting the move or us needing money for PSR, rather than from a footballing ability perspective.

So that's midfield pretty well sorted.
Just need a back up striker, right back and a centre half.

Diaby and Duran = £100m
Plus whatever we might bring in for: Dendoncker, Carlos, Digne/Moreno

And a back-up goalie.

Oh, and welcome to the childish and entitled ‘I want a BIGGER pony’ club.

Selling Diaby would be stupid. Especially because we're not getting "100m" from his or Durans perspective sales.

I wont step on Percy's toes with the later, but Diaby at £50m on 5 years, sold at £60m would add £20m profit. Not £50m/60m. Pointless, especially as it would cost a hell of a lot more to replace him and with no guarantee they'd have as good an output.

The players good enough to play for us in those attacking roles is now a very small pool.
