Would we be better off with Gallagher and Barkley over Luiz? That's the question...
Yes, but there's no way the league will allow us to field 12 players.
I thought Gallagher was sensational at Palace and finally looked to be getting back to that form at Chelsea in recent months. But £50m with 1 year left on his contract seems way too high. Unless we can similarly inflate Duran's exit fee, I would be holding fire on this.

That’s an interesting way of looking at it. Personally no. Doug is better than both of them and you can only play 11 players. Mcginn and Tielemans also offer depth in the same position so I’m not sure the squad improves enough to justify losing one of our best.
If one was a specialist DCM then it would be a closer call.
I understand the Barkley signing - he’s a versatile, experienced player who’s had a great season. He’s not an upgrade on any of the current first team but certainly not a huge drop off either. Not sure about Gallagher, he’s always looked a bit average to me, but I haven’t seen enough of him to know.
Neither are a step up from Luiz, if we were signing them both / selling Luiz to have more depth, I’d understand it but not sure I’d be particularly excited about it either.
Probably more moving parts to it than that of course.
Another unknown in terms of our midfield is whether JJ is going to come back in and be the player we hope he will. That would be like the proverbial new signing and potentially a very good one.
JJ was sensational in the run to 7th. I would wager a completely healed, fully in form JJ would be close to £80m plus, so worth way more to us getting him back to his best.
Sorry to be a pedant here but can we stop saying that money in for one player gives PSR room to buy several. It does, but only if you dont mind not buying anyone else next year and the year after that. If we get, say, £60m for Luiz we could, in theory spend £240m on players with 4 year contracts at £60m per year. But where do we get next year's £60m from and the one after that? It is no different from buying on a credit card. Seems good when you are in Currys carting off a 72inch telly, not so good when you are still paying for it in a couple of years and the latest model is better than yours.
Yeah, you’d be in trouble if your income stays the same, and you couldn’t do the same next year with one of many pure profit assets, like we can.
But what about if your income nearly doubles, like ours will have?
No need to apologise about being a pedant. You’re not. You’re just not quite getting it.
Well, yes, there is always a distinct possibility of me not getting things. No argument there. But I dont see our income constantly increasing without a big new stadium. There is a ceiling and we will always see costs going up too. As an example, existing players signing new contracts will want Champions League wages. Plus there are only so many spots in the Champions League and we can expect a harder fight for it next year. So you can’t just rely on money going up and up. You have to plan for the years where we maybe miss out.
Of course, sellling Dougie gives us nice headroom, I don’t dispute that, but not 4x. Sorry again, but it just doesn’t.
I’ve never been over impressed with Gallagher but you see the Chelsea fans reaction who watch him every week and you do wonder if he is another of those that you only really appreciate when they are in your own team like Barry & Milner.

You're both right. And there is also the expectation that the PSR rules will change slightly in our favour in the next year or so, making it easier to cover that "£60m" of ammortised cost in future years. Big signings where you don't have the "guaranteed income" to cover the costs in years 2, 3, 4, and 5 are always risk, obviously. But it CAN be a calculated one.
The teams with big commercial operations based on a decade or more of relative success have a much easier time calculating those risks, but for us, it just feels more inherently risk because, well, we're Villa. Part of our brains probably still think this is all going to go wrong at some point, but we have to start thinking like a Top 6 side at some point - and this is what top 6 sides do. I don't want us to be Chelsea and mortgaging ourselves up to the eyeballs based on an 18 month spending spree, but I'm also happy for the owners to get a bit creative and stretching the finances as close to the limit as they feel comfortable.

I dunno, they’ve allowed ManC, ManU, Liverpool and Arsenal to play with 12 for ages

We're going to sell Luiz and replace him with 3 players.
Barkley for his passing
Gallagher for his shooting
And Weston McKennie to replicate the last 3 months of the season
Fuck off unless they offer similar for Duran.
Fabrizio Romano saying Chelsea want more than £50m for Gallagher, with Villa, Spurs, and an overseas club interested;

It's easy to imagine him (a) moving for much less than that and (b) going to Spurs instead. He probably walks into the middle of their first-choice current midfield, less so ours.
Gallagher has been shite for years , ok he had a good few weeks under Poch but £50m!! Nah . Cantwell MkII for sure .
What is this link with Gallagher & Cantwell that you keep mentioning?
The only similarity is in the hair cut...
Cantwell is an attacking midfielder. A shit one, but you would class him as a number 10.
Gallagher is a box to box midfielder. An average one, but you would class him as a number 8.
They have fuck all similarities any more than Rogers & McGinn do as players...
