If we have to sell one of our best players for ffp reasons then so be
I’m pretty chilled on who it is as everyone is replaceable

Everyone apart from this fella, he’s irreplaceable

Yeah - I would be gutted if we lost Emi.  Him and Ollie are the only two I don't think well be able to replace.

It would be a shame to lose luiz but could live with it - really not sold on McKinnie or whatever his name is.

I trust Villa to do the right thing.  Don't care who goes as I think every player is replaceable and if they don't want to be here, so be it.  Even if we do sign McKennie, Unai will improve him, get him fit and turn him into a much better player.

I think Gallagher is a very good player. Fits in well with us and a great age. Valuable experience at club and international level.

Aston Villa open talks to set up deal for Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher

Jacob Steinberg The Guardian

Tue 4 Jun 2024 20.40 BST

Aston Villa have opened talks with Chelsea over a deal for Conor Gallagher. Unai Emery is desperate to sign the England midfielder, who is expected to cost at least £50m, and is looking to move quickly in an attempt to land one of his key summer targets.

Tottenham also retain an interest in Gallagher, who has a year left on his contract, and the 24-year-old could be in even bigger demand if he impresses for England at Euro 2024.

Chelsea are expected to welcome bids for Gallagher, even though the player is not in a rush to leave his boyhood club. They have made little progress in talks over a new deal and will not want to find themselves in danger of losing him on a free transfer next year.

Chelsea can minimise their risk of falling foul of the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability regulations by making big sales this summer and know that money received for Gallagher, who is an academy product, will go down in their accounts as pure profit.

It remains to be seen if Villa, who need to strengthen their squad after qualifying for the Champions League, can afford to go as high as £50m. They may need one or two sales to fund their bid for Gallagher, although they could also boost their chances of reaching an agreement with Chelsea by including Jhon Durán as part of the deal. Chelsea have been monitoring the 20-year-old Colombian striker since January.

Emery loves Gallagher’s energy and is determined to convince him to join his side. From Chelsea’s perspective, though, selling Gallagher would be a gamble. He is a fan favourite and he could be followed through the exit door by another homegrown player, Trevoh Chalobah, who is a target for Manchester United.

Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s new head coach, could have to plan for life without both Gallagher and Chalobah. Maresca’s predecessor, Mauricio Pochettino, wanted to keep both players.

Chelsea are willing to explore other options and are poised to complete the signing of the Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer. Their next big move will be to bring in a striker to compete with Nicolas Jackson. Chelsea are still tracking the RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko, who is wanted by Arsenal.

Is my understanding right on FFP.  So if we sell Dougie for 50m (say), and buy Gallagher for 50m - well be in a better position because of amortisation?

And by better position I mean be able to spend more?

I’ve always thought Gallagher was pretty average, but played very well against us in the three games I saw live against Chelsea last year. I also thought he was very good for England last night.

I would be gutted to lose Dougie or any of this current first team. I suppose its inevitable that bit by bit the team will evolve over the next few years and the ‘noise’ around Dougie, however bullshitty, doesn’t seem to be going away. I can’t see us bringing in Barkley and Gallagher and not shipping out someone from the middle of the park.

Yes. We'd receive 50m and lay out 10m every year if he signed a five-year-deal, opening up a further 40m in theory.

Although if we spent it all then we're essentially kicking the can down the road.

I think you have just lost the argument if you think Gallagher has only been good for a few weeks.
