I expect Kalvin Phillips will be leaving man city this summer, he would do a job if the price was right, or maybe a loan deal.

No he wouldn't.

Exactly the type of player we need to avoid. He's done nothing at West Ham beyond getting sent off and gifting some goals in his first 5 games.

Probably go back to Leeds if they come up.

Yeah, I can see a Leeds loan on the cards if they come up. I think he's the opposite of what we are looking for, he's not the clever and clinical use of budget that Emery has been talking about.

The Barkley that was at Luton last season would be an upgrade on Zaniolo and add something to the squad. The Barkley that played for us would be an awful signing.

I guess if his head is right, and Emery sees something, then we should see the Barkley that Chelsea bought for big money from Everton. That would be a good free transfer.

I agree, this is the 'being smart' part Emery was talking about. Gives us cover at no. 8/10 and if Buendia struggles to get back up to speed.

It's not just that he played well for a season with Luton, the fact he went to a bunch of no hopers and really dug in for a season suggests he's got his head screwed on again.

I quite like Barkley but he strikes me as a player who needs a lot of minutes and to be loved.  I'm not sure he'll get that with us.

Phillips has got too much of the Drinkwater's about it.

A Ugarte type loan with option to buy would be ideal considering how much financial restriction is likely to be reduced in time for the 2025/26 season.

Maybe, but I get the impression he's sorted his head out a bit and is making up for lost time.

I would have thought that Barkley is a little too similar to Youri for us to have an interest, good technically but a bit immobile and not overly energetic.

He wouldn't be playing anywhere like Zaniolo was. If we sign him it would be as an extra body in midfield / Douglas Luiz cover.

I don't mean as a like for like, more that he would take his spot in the squad if we don't retain him (and I don't think we will).

Having seen Youri morphing from woeful to indispensable, I'm pretty happy to take Barkley on a free. Our midfield has been decimated this season and our post Jan form been a real problem. Getting in a Youri and a Kamara backup is a must.

But is that because he was getting a lot of minutes and had the role of the main man?

But certainly, if he can keep his Luton form he'd be an asset and would definitely have been useful at times for us this season.

I'm not too keen on the 'In Emery we trust' line as if you purely follow that then what's the point in discussing transfers?  But in this instance, if having done their due diligence they think he'd be an asset, then I'd be very happy having him in the squad.

Just because Luton played him more conservatively, doesn't mean Emery would. Unai's started Tielemans (a similarly flexible player) everywhere from defensive midfield to partnering Ollie in attack, left midfield and right midfield. Not that I think we'll be signing Barkley, but if we did, I don't think Emery would need to or would choose to use him in a limited fashion like Luton have.
