Villa have chosen to do this and the figure will be reduced by 30 per cent because of a sell-on clause that was also placed in the terms that took Philogene to Hull.

So we match the £18m fee but this clause then reduces it to £12.6m...clever.

Agreed. I don't know how anyone can watch his highlights from last season and think that £12.6m isn't a deal for a player of his quality that is able to play on the left. There will be no bedding-in period as he knows his way around BH. Should be an easy transition and good for all parties.

Well, either that or we buy him for £18m (actually £12.6m) from Hull and then sell him to Ipswich for £18m. Nice bit of 'fucking over' PSR.

Why does it mess with PSR?
We buy for £18m (amortise over life of contract)
Book £6m of revenue instantly
Sell for £18m to Ipswich, recognise £18m of cost and £18m of revenue. Upside £6m ie exactly the same as if Ipswich just buy him for £18m now and we book £6m of revenue.

We only need to pay £12.6m because of the 30% sell-on clause, so in theory, we could turn round and sell him for £18m and make £5.4m profit for nothing.

The problem is that there's the lad to think about it and we would have to string him along in order for that to happen and rightly, our ethics and integrity would be questioned.

Given it’s a matching clause, clubs like Ipswich have already offered £18m, which we get the same £5.4m from without having to jerk JPB around. The only reason the sell on clause works for PSR is if we think we can sell him for more than the £18m already on the table. In that world we take 100% of the profit, rather than 30%.

If he suddenly get sold to Spurs for £30-40 plus Lo Celso, you have to think he is. That foot injury sounded horrible.

I really hope not. He was looking really really good before the injury

When you look at this you realise why Unai is still interested

We all know he's a baller. Just fingers crossed we can compete with the Evertons and Ipswichs of this world unlike the Boltons and Charltons of Dolly O'Drearys mid-00s.

He plays football like he’s loving it, and a lot of those clips are ‘moments of magic’, the kind of thing that can be the difference in a match.

I’m well pleased he could be coming home.

I'm genuinely confused.  We sold him for how much, and are buying him back for how much?

Sold for £18m
Bought back for £18m
Sell on fee Hull owe us approx £5m (even though they sell back to us).
So we pay £13m
The reality is Hull have paid us £5m for a seasons loan

We sold him for about £5m, it was Archer that was £18m.

Poor sods on the Everton forum have a 110 page thread on Philogene.  :-X

This and it’s reply made me chuckle;

Woolverhampton_Blue:
Looks like he’s skilful, adept at passing to players on his own team, and can score and assist. He wouldn’t fit in here at all.

JimmyJeffers:
I think we can coach that out of him. Replace his boots with breeze blocks and we have ourselves a player

In which case, how can it be good business to be buying him back?

Well, if:

(i) he turns out to be a really good player or
(ii) we sell him on at a profit

Yes, you are right Lee.
We sold for £5.8m so will get a sell on fee of approx £2m so we are getting an £18m player for approx £16m.
If we can then punt him on in the future for more than the £18m all to the good

I'm wondering more and more if JJ is fucked injury wise.

Could be but I'm leaning towards them wanting to move him more central.

What are we looking at at the moment in terms of players per position? Particularly midfield. Go basic in terms of positions, so left, right, and central midfield.

sorry, mate, that doesn't sound right. We sold him for £5.8m. Hull are prepared to sell him for £18m, of which we get 30% (£6m, roughly). So, using round numbers, we get an £18m player for £12m and have already received £6m for him.
Mr Philogene doesn't need to do too much for us to benefit, both monetarily and footballing-wise.
