If we take it Barkley is replacing Luiz, we are net at the same position

I'm certainly not against the Barkley idea in principle, but imagine that statement six months ago - it would have seemed absurd. It still feels pretty nuts even with Barkley's decent end to the season.

Agreed, it's still absurd. As is posters trying to convince themselves Luiz won't be much of a loss anyway, nothing without Kamara etc.

Luiz will only be a loss of significance if we don't buy a player of equivalent quality. I don't think we would put ourselves in that position that our net outlay is a left back and players we got in through Noel Edmond's swap shop.

Yep, my guess is we buy a more orthodox DCM after the 1 July. The squad will have better balance despite probably losing the better player.

Enzo being a more plausible alternative to dendonker/Tim.

Isn’t the reported deal £25m + the two players? It only takes both to become worth £25m for it to be a pretty good deal. It doesn’t take that much to reach that valuation these days and I’d back Unai to improve both of them.

€25m not GBP on every report I've read. Both players valued at €15m each. With exchange rates that´s £46.5m for Dougie. Hardly great business but needs must.

I think we are upgrading the squad positions immediately and satisfying FFP. Obviously Maarten immediately comes in competing for the starting role at LB. There’s loads of the window to go. July 1st, we will move on to better first team targets including a forward and CM and possibly CB.

Maatsen
Iling-Junior
Barrenechea
Dobbin

With Barkley to add to that.

I am all for bringing in very promising youngsters but there is only any real experience in Barkley.

I was excited by McKenny as he seemingly had it all - all those above are all pretty untried at premier level

Potentially both our left backs could leave so it is good to bring some left sided options in

Not forgetting Dougie doesn't want to stay.
Nobody wants him to go, as he is a very good player.
But it's easier to sell a player who wants out anyway, rather than forcing a player out like Ramsey just to comply with PSR rules.

I do wonder what Unai thought of McKennie not being interested in football other than when he plays?

So what?

Even fantastic established players take time to adjust to the premiership

Bailey - took 2 years to become the player he is now
Diaby - still to show full potential
There are countless others with non Villa teams

Spots him in a café with his laptop out, on his fifth fry up. Emery looks over his shoulder. He sees he's watching Love Island and not Uni Minsk v Neman. Mutters "fat ******". Calls off the deal.

That's unfair. McKennie is Villa through and through, right down to his bedsores.

I'd take Maatsen's Champions League final experience ahead of someone with a couple of seasons for Palace or West Ham.

He’s also had a whole season in the championship, getting in the Team of the season selection I think.
