But if Luiz wants to go, then we will let him. Do we really want him here for another season when he wants to go? And if he does stay, he's in his last 12 months next summer and we won't be getting a big fee for him.

This is our last chance to get a decent amount for him unless he signs another deal. So if he wants to go, and we get a good fee, he will go.

He's only worth what people are going to pay for him, after all.

Yep, Stephen Ireland is the turd standard of player exchange deals. But there is no way that Monchi and Emery agree to take a player they don't want. They have total control of those decisions and the owners' faith.

Not wanting to go full Footy, but I can see the club taking a close look at any US players that can add value to the squad. Heck would love to be able to use that to market us in the US.

On the other hand, there was Milan Baros for John Carew.

According to Sky Italia;

"McKennie is valued at €30 million, the Villans' valuation of Douglas Luiz is €60 million and the player is also asking for €6.5 million net per season, figures that have slowed down the negotiation but not definitively closed the door."

I don't accept for one second that our valuation of Luiz is £60m when Rice and Caiecedo moved for £100m+

I understand prices feel like they'll be squeed this summer, but Luiz is one of the best midfielders in the league and still only 26.  Surely even in this summers market he must be £80m +.

As for McKennie, I just don't see it.  Maybe Unai thinks he can make use of him and if so fair enough.  But I prefer my players to have a spine and I didn't see that at Leeds.

That price is way too low for Doug and too high for McKennie.

I guess it's possible there's a release clause for Luiz that was set at what he thought was a reasonable level when he signed the extension 18 months ago. The club weren't doing especially well at the time and we'd turned down two bids from Arsenal in the summer.

Not even £60m, it's €60 million.

Fees don't drop dramatically just because a player has one year left to go - it just forces you to the negotiating table and removes the "we're not selling at any price option".  See Harry Kane last summer - into the final year of his contract, still went for full market value.

Assuming Unai and his team still see Dougie as a long-term part of his plans (and I see no reason why they wouldn't), then I would expect him to sign a new contract in the first half of next season - assuming our form remains similar and we're still in the mix for European/top four places.  If it drops off, then I'd expect him to be one of the first out the door next summer, but certainly not while there are Champions League games still to be played.

That's true, but these things have a way of leaking, don't they? Given the season he's had, I imagine it would have come out that he had one, and at a level that made him affordable for a lot of clubs in European competition.

I also read somewhere that Luiz had been raised in the discussions over McKennie and a quiet shake of the head was Villa's reply.

None the wiser.  Time, the meat grinder of transfer deals, will reveal all.

Luiz is going nowhere*.

* I think I said that about Grealish as well about 2 days before he fucked off.

There was a lot of suspicion that Doug's new deal had a release clause in at the time. Because he was interested in the Arsenal deal, which the club turned down, yet he still signed. He would be going for free this summer had he not.

So there may be a clause, there may have been a gentleman's agreement that we would let him leave if signed and we get a fee.

But what we can't lose sight of is that this isn't a Benteke / Grealish type situation. Whether he stays or goes, we will progress. We aren't that weak anymore, either squad-wise or coaching-wise.

Starting to get the excuses in.

Like, I'm not saying it definitely won't happen, but Juve do this all the time. Plus, this kind of swaps-on-valuations thing is such a classic attempt at a plusvalenze scam, for which they got docked a bunch of points a couple of seasons ago. Why would we help them do this for a downgrade in midfield?

A lot depends though on how much the player involved is wanted, and by how many teams.
