Monchi wasn't bought here to sift through relegation jumble surely ? i'd imagine his remit is wider and more informed and planned .

It doesn’t have to be binary, both/and is surely preferable.

The remit must be to operate within a budget, get good/best value for a player with the right skills, driven by the right personality at the right price.

I don’t get why there is so much reactionary judgment when the league season isn’t even over for some countries.

The extent to which people seem to look for stuff to moan about is remarkable.

I know there have been windows when we are confident we are keeping the powder dry but then the anticlimax of, no, that was it already done.

But surely we can wait to see one (possible, FIRST!) deal in the context of the whole window?

I tend to see little football beyond games I go to, so have little informed opinion, even less original thinking, appreciating others are way more switched on.

I think the issue of Barkley for me would be how does he manage irregular appearances and/or biding his time until he gets a regular gig. It worked out ok with Thielemans, remember all the ideas he’d gone out to pasture?

I’m not a massive fan of the For the Love of Paul McGrath podcast (and perish the day they had on a Rangers podcaster who convinced me the Gerard move was worth a shot!) but I thought the Luton podcast guy was worth listening to and seemed to speak well about the changed role & possibility of Barkley.

One man’s rummage at the football jumble sale is another man’s jewel in the relegated dung heap?

Tielemans was as a result of sifting through relegation sides, he turned out OK. And after we signed him, we went and spunked £80m on Torres and Diaby.

And while there will obviously be plenty of dross as a counter-argument, Roy Keane, Andy Robertson, James Ward-Prowse, Gareth Southgate, James Milner, Nathan Ake, Jermaine Defoe, Kieran Trippier...

All picked up at the relegation car-boot sale.

I think, despite some initial reservations, we got the best value from shopping at the relegated teams last season. Perhaps we'll do it again with Barkley. Although, I'm not sure there's that many other players that covered themselves in glory this past season. (Doughty worth a punt, I reckon)
Stafford, Arblaster, Doughty: one example from each relegated side who would be worth a punt.
Monchi's job is to find the best-value and most Premier-League compatible players who will fit best in Emery's plans. Whether they're from Spain, Serbia or Southampton is neither here nor there.
Talking of Southampton, on-loan Flynn Downes looks like a very accomplished CMF player.

Yeah, our best season for the past 30 years (before this one arguably) was after buying two players from relegated teams and one from the Serbian league.

And Coops thinks he’s the best player in the world.

And we do tend to sign the free transfers early on before spending anyway.

We have a management team that took a meat and potatoes midfielder from Stoke and turned him into one of the best in Europe, and a past his best centre forward that had always been a bit patchy and turned him into a goal machine.

Its with these kind of deals that they made their name.

It's with these kind of deals coming off, with being smart and brave that we make up the ground on those that have more money who think they can just throw more of it at the problem.

Walking yellow card, if Arsenal offered >80m I’d back Monchi and Emery to invest it in 2-3 players. I was devastated when we sold Platt, but Big Ron did well with the money.

Better Luiz than Watkins, Martinez, or Ramsey.

He’s a good player but we need to strengthen in 2-3 other positions and have Tielemans already to replace him.

I don't think its any coincidence that Doug's form for the first half of the season directly coincided with our dominant stretch. Be careful what you wish for. Tielemans is hardly cover for Doug. He had 10 goals and 10 assists this year, with a tough 2 months covering for Kamara's injury.

I think it’s Kamara’s absence that impacted Dougie’s game a lot. He’s thrived playing alongside a more defensive, tactically astute partner. Kamara is great at sensing danger and corrects a lot even just with his positioning. You could even say that Cash hasn’t been as good without Kamara as he quite often dropped into that space on the right when Cash bombed on. Getting cover for Kamara must be our priority this summer both as cover and as another option.

I watched the Villa v Man City game again last night and it was very much evident that Luiz is a better player when having Kamara in the DM role. Both players were excellent that night, especially Kamara. We really miss him when he is not in the side. Absolute Rolls Royce of a DM.

I think he was at Valencia when King Knouté was at Sevilla.

The work with Nzonzi was legit though, I remember watching him and thinking 'who the hell is this guy?'.

My fault, I didn't express it properly because I'm a poorly educated man trapped in a film-star looks body.
