There will be nothing but Wetherspoons, Harvesters and Yateses in ten years.

The upstairs is perfect for an independent music venue.

The building itself has potential as a ‘Hare and Hounds’ type venue, but I’m not sure that the location would be successful. The conversion expenditure would be high.

Upstairs isn't big enough. The main room capacity is only around 120.

Thanks to Frank for keeping us informed.

It's the end of an era and, for many of us, the end of an integral part of the match day ritual. Some readers may recall that Dr Thomas Thurnell-Read from Loughborough University contacted this website regarding his project on pub closures and spoke with some of us about this issue, with specific reference to the Barton's.

He is just finishing his research and his findings, including the Barton's as a case study, will be published online shortly.

Pity it can't be moved brick by brick to Digbeth.

There was a news item last night in the BBC news showing a Swedish church being moved from its current location to somewhere 3 miles away due to subsidence.

"In preparation for the move, engineers raised the building - supported by steel beams - on to self-propelled modular transporters."

Seen that. A building largely made of timber is doable. Not straightforward but doable. The only way the Bartons could be moved is to have it demolished Brick by Brick, tile by tile etc. it would be cheaper to have a replica made and that would be horrendously expensive. None of this will happen. The only way the Bartons can become a viable operation again is if Newtown becomes a hyp’ destination that people want to flock to every day of the week. There’s more chance of moving it than that happening.

Shall we start a poll on when the fire happens?
