The Hen and Chickens is good too.

The upkeep of the Bartons must be a nightmare though. There must also be a lot of dead space in the upper floors.

Didn't The Wellington reinvent as a desi? Never been mind, but handy for the number 11.

There is a desi pub up near Hockley Circus/Soho Road area that seems to be doing ok.....for the life of me i can't remember it's name or former name when it was a pub.
Could be a good option for a drink when if we ever play the bitters again..........

No that starts a little bit further down the road, where Birchfield Rd crosses Newtown Row, or is it Middleway.

You’re right, looks like anything on the left towards town if you’re heading down from the Matalan island.

If it were to be closed down by current owners, surely it would be prime for a takeover and conversion into a Desi Pub

What is a Desi Pub?

Edit - I know the Geographical area Desi refers to, just wondering how it applies to a pub?
i've had a look , it's basically a curry house masquerading as a pub. Not like there aren't enough curry houses in Brum already. They're ok, there's a couple by us , but if i wanted a curry i'd rather go to a proper restaurant
That's a dreadful description of a Desi pub. Go to Hen & Chicken as it may help you to expand your knowledge.

It's going to be very difficult, probably impossible, to recreate the atmosphere of the Barton's, with all the regulars we got to know so well, anywhere else.
If Oakham decide not to persevere with the Barton's and sell it on, will it ever be the same? Of course, what others have said is absolutely right: the cost of the upkeep and the location mean that the survival of the old pub as we know it would be a mammoth undertaking.

Do you mean the Grove in Handsworth? The Wellington is Up Town.

Hen and Chickens has the advantage of being on the edge of the Jewellery Quarter, and within walking distance of town, so will have a lot more trade.

The more obvious problem The Bartons has, is that it's in a fairly concentrated muslim area - so there's not going to be a lot of local custom to keep them ticking over during the week.

we went there pre xmas - Indian Cafe Racer at the back of The Wellington. It's quite nice because there's 2 distinct parts to the building - Pub at the front / Indian at the back.
So you can go for a pint without feeling like you're in a curry house and vice versa. My old favourite vinyl shop was next door now sadly closed down. (The Diskery)

Ah yes I've heard good things about that place although we are at cross purposes between Wellington Rd, The Wellington and The Wellington Hotel.
