He hasn't been that good at cracking them passed the keepers recently in open play. Probably why McGinn gave him the ball to "boost his confidence". Bad decision from the captain though.

I think he was maybe always taking it? But SJM was doing that to take any grief that would come off the Bologna players.

Ashley Young did it fabulously a couple of seasons ago for us before chucking the ball to whoever took it

Danny Ings. 4-0 v Brentford. Our manager was Aaron Danks.

Just Googled out of interest. Assistant at Bayern. Not too shabby.

I'm having difficulty in even persuading myself that I remember Aaron Dankes.

I spoke to a former premier league striker about this about a year ago (he was never the main penalty taker for any of his sides, but scored about a dozen across his entire career), and he said hitting that sweet spot where the keeper can't it get is incredibly hard, and the margin for error is so small if you aim just inside the post, that many players simply prefer hitting it hard at a place that gives them a much higher percentage of it being on target each time, even if it brings in the chance of a save.

He was never a fan of waiting for the keeper to move and going the other way.

Me too. Can't picture him. Neil Cutler seemed more prominent in that short time between Gerrard and Emery.

Aaron Danks certainly hasn’t landed in a bad spot having left us. Part of Michael Carrick’s staff at Boro and now with Bayern with Kompany. Could be a CL winning coach in a month or so.

In my footballing days, I was the penalty taker for a few clubs. Always remembered the great Willie Anderson saying words to the effect 'never look at the goal posts or the goalkeeper until the very last second before you kick the ball. Then give the quickest of glances at one of the goal posts and place the ball inside the other post.'

It worked. Amazing how many times the keeper dived towards the post I had just glanced at. Thanks Willie.

I only took one penalty in my playing days. It was for a hat trick so they gave it to me. The pressure (Sunday League footy ffs) got to me, I fluffed it and miss-kicked it, but the ball bobbled in the opposite corner to keeper. Ha! Worse penalty ever but I got the match ball!

PS,  I didn’t as there was no way I was allowed to keep the Mitre Multiplex!

I missed one during a cup game over Rednal way, where the other team’s mates were behind the goal doing cut-throat gestures as I prepared to take it. I didn’t bottle it though as I scored under more threats in the penalty shoot-out.

I played as lone centre forward for a couple of seasons and missed a string of penalties, the last one I absolutely hammered high slightly to the keepers right and he just stood still, threw up his right arm and punched it, it went miles.

Yeah, get a method and stick to it. I was a penalty taking centre half. Keeper usually expects a defender to hit it with power across your body, so I'd do similar and give a glance that way in the run up, approach with a bit of purpose, but not too much, then open the body last second and push it in the other corner. Missed one. Scored, I don't know, 12-15ish. Always thought a flair player should do the opposite and go across. It's 90% in the mind at that level. Bit different professionally because the keepers know your strengths and tricks.

The one I missed was in a game going for the league. The other team in the running were a bunch of shithouses and came to watch. Loads of grief. Felt the pressure. Think it caused me to overdo the run up, which the keeper read. Then we won another and the centre forward came over and asked me if he could have it. Never handed anything over so quickly. Thought that was pretty interesting as that was with 8-10 blokes giving me stick. Imagine 50k!

Lost 4-3 and finished second 🙃

Played in goal for a works 5-a-side team

Got to the final of s competition and it went to a shoot out. All 5 players, me included had to take a pen.

Saved one, then it was my turn to take one.

Never, ever felt more nervous on a pitch anywhere.
Just bladdered it, and fortunately it went in - never been so relieved.

When it comes to pens, the taker can oftimes be a villan, but the keeper can always be a hero.

Once missed a penalty for Romulus as an 11-year old. Fell over whilst taking it, but whilst on my knees I found a quid on the pitch.
