They've picked a Villa player.

I bet every single one of them who voted for him picked an Argentina player.

There's a flaw to the voting system.  The ex-players/journalists have too much focus on the big clubs/leagues and maybe their own quirky club/country.  Cumulatively that means loads of votes for the big clubs.

It's a good job none of it matters even slightly.

Hopefully my Member of Parliament disagrees. I've already sent a complaint.

Maybe it matters more than you think, but perhaps not as much as other more emotive posters (I'm more in the latter camp!) might think!  Obvs I'm talking about this in a football context, it means zilch in the actual grand scheme of life.

I'd imagine players do look at these lists and wonder if they were at a different club their stock / wages would be higher.  I also think it possibly impacts a players transfer value.

Anyway, I think he deserves to be on that list somewhere, as does John McGinn (esp when you add his impact on the Scottish team and their qualification for the WC).

No, it matters precisely as much as I think.

I don't think most people would see that as a flaw.

Obviously as grumpy "why haven't they picked Rogers / Kamara / Tielemans?!?" Villa fans, we would because it means that Our Brave Boys Don't Get The Recognition* They Deserve.

But most people would probably accept that the better players are likely to play for the bigger, richer clubs so pointless lists like this that are being compiled from the opinions of *checks list* the Editor at the Sport Orda website in Kazakhstan, are probably going to be made up of the bigger names from the bigger teams and bigger countries.

After his four goals at the World Cup, Rogers will be all over lists like this in twelve months, even if he's still just the same player.

*recognition from a little-read, subjective piece in a mediocre newspaper.

The list has always felt about 18 months or so out of date, every year.

That’s why I rate Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers higher. Palmer was outstanding even when Chelsea were an absolute mess — he carried them and made things happen on his own.

Palmer scored one goal between the middle of January and the end of last season. He wasn't making much happen then.

That was a dip in form like every player goes though not representative of his general play.

True plus it relies on the TV games broadcast around the world, for example, how else would Liverpool's MacAllister get ranked number 35? It's just as well MacAllister plays for Argentina as he wouldn't get in Scotland's midfield. If he played for us he'd be sitting in the bench.

To be fair, a lot of midfielders wouldn't get in to our starting XI.

Indeed.  A good deal of that is surely down to the coaching being so amazing that the team is greater than the sum of its parts.  But it's also because we do have sensational footballers.  There aren't many players I'd swap with Rogers, McGinn, Tielemanns and Kamara.

Not bad for about £14m between them.
