What is our priority?
« on: September 27, 2023, 11:06:37 PM »
As a club, what actually is our priority?
We aren’t going to win the league and so the best we can hope for is to finish a couple of places higher than last season.

We went all out to qualify for Europe, and then put out a poor, second string that cost us the game in Poland.

We get a decent home tie in the league cup, massacre the team and formation and get dumped out with barely a whimper.

I love Emery, I really do.
But I’m struggling to understand what the club is prioritising this year.

Any ideas anyone ?

There are five Champions League places available this season, and it's not completely out of the question that we could challenge for one of them - especially now Chelsea and Man United look vulnerable.

Perhaps Emery and the Board - "The Emery Board!" thought that too at the start of the season; though it's now apparent that we simply cannot rotate our defence and midfield too much.

I think it should be to win SOMETHING with the order of priority (writing off the possibility of winning the PL) - FA Cup >>>>Conference League >>>>Carabao

If we had a recent history of winning trophies, then I'd be saying we should prioritise the League; but we haven't.

We've gone potless for 27 years, which is ridiculous for a club of our size - you'd have to be in your early mid 30s to be able to remember that - and we must have lost thousands of potential fans in that time.

I'd say the FA Cup.

Well aside from the league. League is always priority for every club really.

It’s obvious that the PL is the priority.
Maybe not for all the fans but without doubt it is fir the club.
They want CL football and with that they get to do more corporate, merchandise, TV, sponsorship and ultimately more money.

As a club I think the priority is to break the top-4.

Much as we joke about corporate hospitality, if we are going to try to compete it will have to be an integral part of us getting there.  Looking at Man Citiy's offerings compared to ours was an eye-opener.  We're going to have to start bridging that gap one way or another.

I still think there's a right and a wrong way of doing it.  The Terrace View was the wrong way, but I guess we are desperately tight on space in our ground given the size of the stands, so on reflection I understand the thinking.  The Holte Suite was inevitable.  It may not have been handled or communicated well, but even so I think it's reasonable for the club to try to make money from that space.

5th place or above.  And if we don’t do it now, it’s hard to see a future where we ever will.

I'm pretty sure there's an Unai soundbite from the close season saying he wanted a cup.  The Carabao or Conference League would lead to UEFA Cup qualification, so surely a step in the right direction.

I fully understand everything he said about fitness & rotation, but putting square pegs in round holes never works.  Still have nightmares trying to see Heskey defend.  If he'd have not been loaned out given Moreno's delicate fitness Revan could have filled in admirably with less risk.

I've nothing to add to the GK situation that's not been said already.  Everyone can see he's a liability.

Improvement on last season.

And we lost by one less goal in the 3rd Round this year.... But we're 6th in the League.

As mentioned above by a few people, our priority appears to be money...

My own priority would be to win something at long last, but it looks like the club are chasing Champions League qualification over trophies.
