If it's true he's been offered a five year contract at £200k a week, at his age, can we really blame him?

That's mental, if true. It's definitely a 5 year deal, but Yanited fans think it'll be nearer £150k a week. Still, £65-85m is big money to invest in someone who's played a lot of football at 29.

Who could turn that down?

I'd imagine for most players, the thought of playing for ManU or Liverpool is one that's hard to turn down, regardless of what us fans think.

But then they should also realise the response it'll get when they do.

I'm sure it also raises his profile and, if he is inclined, he will be able to get more lucrative personal sponsorships on stuff too.

Five years!, so they are still giving out daft contracts then. That's the type of thing they can afford to do, we can't.

Screw all this 'wishing him well' nonsense. What is this, tiddlywinks? I was listening to claret and blue this morning and had to switch it off.

He got to play in the champions league with us under a world class manager. He got to win a trophy with us. He no doubt got offered a lucrative contract with us.

Like Yorke, Bosnich etc any villa player going there - especially now- can absolutely get fucked.

Thankfully i have an ally at last - cheers

He was great for us, one of my favourites and i am sure we will look back and see this is a great deal

But them.....sorry no
If my Mom signed for them i would not speak to her again - simple

I don't think he was offered a contract.  We had to wait due to SCR.  Another way the rules have fucked us over.

We generally seem to do it at the 2 years remaining point, unless there is a pressing need for re-evaluation or salary uplift like with Rogers and Grealish. So I imagine that there had been talk that negotiations would start this summer. Whether he intimated he would probably wouldn't be signing, I don't know.

There's something that doesn't add up about all this for me.

We could've verbally agreed to pay him £x/week if we'd qualified for the Champions League if we wanted to.  Fair enough, it couldn't be confirmed until after the world cup, but with 2 years left on his deal that's neither here nor there.  And we'd have known broadly what our financial outlook was going to be a month or so before he went to the WC.

I'm sure he was our top earner or near enough. There may have been a distance between what he'd expect after 3 successful years and what we were going to offer a player at 29 knowing we can't carry him if his legs go.

If there was no release clause would we have run his contract down?

How did we manage to offer new contracts to all the other players then?

Of course.
But it is fairly rare, even though it is becoming more common.
