We generally seem to do it at the 2 years remaining point, unless there is a pressing need for re-evaluation or salary uplift like with Rogers and Grealish. So I imagine that there had been talk that negotiations would start this summer. Whether he intimated he would probably wouldn't be signing, I don't know.

There's something that doesn't add up about all this for me.

We could've verbally agreed to pay him £x/week if we'd qualified for the Champions League if we wanted to.  Fair enough, it couldn't be confirmed until after the world cup, but with 2 years left on his deal that's neither here nor there.  And we'd have known broadly what our financial outlook was going to be a month or so before he went to the WC.

I'm sure he was our top earner or near enough. There may have been a distance between what he'd expect after 3 successful years and what we were going to offer a player at 29 knowing we can't carry him if his legs go.
