Can’t say I get overly exercised about it to be honest. It depends if you ascribe any additional value to the club referred to as “United” or not. I think it’s just an identifier, because they’ve been the most prominent club with that name for a period of time. Doesn’t mean they’re more important in my eyes, just more prominent at this time.

I didn't realise how many rules there were to being cantankerous
It's not being cantankerous.  It's just not buying into the narrative that some clubs have a god given right to be more superior to others.  If you don't rage against the machine you end up with shite like the Super League and the constant Sky references to the BIg 6.

Fuck them.  Fuck 'em all.

I agree.

' City' really annoys me as I remember before their takeover nobody referred to them as that apart from obviously Mancs. They were always called Man City.

Then you saw people gradually referring to them as just 'City' as if it's the familiar club from down the road they've always been interested in.

At least our neighbours have eased this issue, by becoming more commonly know as 'The D.ogshit'.

Corey

If you feel this way you have no right whatsoever to complain when the press, TV and radio fawn over London & Manchester clubs and marginalise the rest.  You're buying into their narrative and their bias.  You are accepting the huge advantage these clubs benefit from in terms of publicity and favourable treatment.  Either you accept they are superior or you don't.

I don't.  Genuflecting to the Manchester clubs isn't for me, but you crack on.

Again, I feel like the context I used it in made it clear who I was talking about.

If the conversation had been about football in general then I would have specified, and I'm pretty sure I always have specified except for that one post.

Anyway..... have we signed anyone yet?

The key really is in the orginal post. You mentioned Newcastle and United.

Newcastle are United. And so are many other clubs. By accepting, and using United as a way of referring to ManU, you are perpetuating the problem.

That club have no divine right to expect anyone else to call them United. None whatsoever.

I honestly cannot believe that anyone would give this much of a fuck, you people have nothing else to think about?

full stop

Of course we don’t. We are a bunch of sad individuals that have got nothing better to do than go on a football forum in middle of the day and get all exercised about not a lot

It’s great

Agree that a goalkeeper will probably be done with very little lead-up. Should be very good with playing it out.

We've been linked with a highly rated 20 year old from Valencia. Meant to be rapid.

Anyone else noticing the emphasis on pace? Pau - top 5 fastest players in Spain. Diaby - one of the fastest players in Europe. Johnson - fastest player in the Premier League last season.

Defenders could get very worried about facing us.

Yep.

And I love it...

We are The Villa.  There's only one.  We're not belittling any other club's identity by referring to ourselves in that way.

Mind you, they got pretty annoyed on the Eston Villa forum when fans of Levadia referred to 'The Villa' as possible UECL opponents, and rightly so.

Aaah, the old "ooh the transfer thread has added 3 pages quickly" excitement, only to realise it's a debate about who is United.

That's why I love this place so much!!

Crikey, I can't believe you can get so worked up about other people giving a toss.

Again, I feel like the context I used it in made it clear who I was talking about.

It's not about that.  You're really not getting this are you?

What's not to get?

Two people decided to get pedantic about a post I made despite the fact it was very obvious who I was talking about. The thread has since been derailed for about 2 pages by rants about fighting the power.

I understand the wider context you're all so bent out of shape about, but it doesn't apply here, and that's why I've pointed out, 3 times now, that the outrage, vitriol, anger, whatever is misplaced and in this case you're choosing to get annoyed about it.

As opposing fans briefly sang to them during a fairly pervasive ad campaign in (I think) the seventies: there’s only one United, and that’s a chocolate biscuit.

I wasn’t in any way annoyed, so didn’t comment, but the context wasn’t clear at all. You said Newcastle were playing United. It looked incongruous given that Newcastle are called United.
