Newcastle have said a few times in recent months that they have to be careful with FFP. I don't think they need to throw more money at Barnes than us. They're in the Champions League and we're not. Suck it up and get someone else, with a smaller nose.

Again, just to be clear, the only reason I'm questioning the Barnes thing, is out of curiosity as to why we haven't actually made a move? By all accounts he would have been interested, and it would have suited his family better, but we haven't even approached Leicester about him.

So you've got a good quality player, that was on our list of potential targets, who was open to the idea of playing for us, but we've not even tried to sign him. Meanwhile, we're chasing bigger names who are not interested in us at all.

It's not really about Barnes himself, although I would have liked to have him here. I'm just wondering what is actually going on behind the scenes that we're not even making attempts to sign someone we were interested in signing?

We've been linked with Gnonto, Adams, and Johnson, all midfielders too, and all with less competition interested, if you believe reports. So it could be something as simple as us prioritising someone else, which is apparently what Spurs did regarding dropping their interest in Barnes too.

I'm not criticising our transfer policy or the business done so far this window, just to be clear. I'm just curious as to what the thought process is.

None of us know what is going on really. Links are just that, links.

Yep. Probably best to avoid all gossip and just come back at the end of the window and see who we added. At the moment it looks like we're chasing players who aren't interested, ignoring ones who are, and that's probably not what's actually happening at all.

IMO Barnes plays on the wrong side of the pitch based on emery’s current tactics, so I’m not that fussed if he goes to Newcastle.

If speculation can be believed we are aiming high for the Bailey upgrade. Asensio and Williams are both right sided forwards.  I imagine that is the standard we are hoping for with Brennan Johnson pencilled in if they don’t materialise.

Either way, I reckon this player will be one of the last signed as the top targets will be waiting for champions league offers.

Asesnsio has already signed for PSG hasn't he?

I wonder if this is true. Isn’t Johnson both a right sided and central playing forward, so cover, maybe upgrade eventually for Ollie and Bailey?

Would love to Chukwueze  walking through Brum airport anytime in the next couple of weeks. AC have bid £20M for him.

Barnes won’t improve Newcastle much anyway. They already have saint maximin and Gordon in that position so minimal net gain.

Yep and Nico Williams is staying at Bilbao.
Vinnie says we’re going for Johnson, so intend to believe that.

I think Barnes in means Saint Maximin out, or that's the common opinion on it anyway.

That’s how good clubs improve though, strength in depth and no noticeable drop off in quality if they have an injury.

Like us with the middle of the park and middle of defence then.

Nowadays, the last bit of the deal is the actual offer to the club
Everything else has been sorted out to make sure it will all go through if a bid is accepted

That’s why clubs and supporters sometimes mistakenly say we were never in for him, because we never bid,
I would think that for every player a club brings in there’s probably 10/15 other players that they have sounded out and therefore been linked with
Doesn’t mean to say the links were spurious just means the player or the club never agreed terms or wasn’t interested in joining

I agree Risso, especially if Maximin is moved out for a decent fee to keep FFP regular.

A slight twist though, I think the priority should generally be to strengthen the weakest position. So for us, a second forward and a reserve keeper. Pau and Tielemans add depth but are a bit of a luxury when there’s obvious weaknesses.

Generally speaking, I agree, but Tielemans on a free seems like really good business, and something that had to be done immediately. And then Torres feels like he was Emery's #1 priority, maybe even seeds were sown in January, so making that happen was probably easy, relatively speaking.

I would be happy to see the next names in be in those positions though.

Both are great signings just not priorities. The fact we are making such signings just demonstrates how ambitious we are as I’m confident they’ll also address the weaknesses too.

I agree that at this point those 2 positions you mention are the main ones. A real game changer at the peak of his powers as the second striker. It seems odd to be saying it about a reserve keeper but if Martinez isn’t available it’s almost like giving the opposition a goal head start !
