I really like Kamara but I don't think there would be many people who agree that he is currently better than Rice.

I'd be quite happy to accept that Rice is a better player than Kamara right now. But Kamara was free and Rice costs more than (probably) our entire annual transfer budget. And as others have said, I'm not sure he's *that* much better. Plus, let's be honest, the only clubs spending that kind of money on a marginal gain are ones higher up the food chain than us right now.

Rice is better than Kamara right now but I agree with LeeB in that I think if we can get Kamara to be a bit more physical I can see that gap closing significantly. I reckon Tim, if he puts the work in and keeps pushing himself, can get to a similar level as well.

Agreed about Iroegbunam. He could be top quality.

I'd say Rice is a lot more than just a marginal gain for Arsenal. He's basically Xhaka's replacement and he's a huge upgrade on him. Very good signing for them if they get it over the line.

Based on what?  We've only spent that amount once, and that was when we had to build practically an entire squad from scratch.  Every other season we've been in the £60m-£80m range.

When we spent not very much in January it was strongly hinted that we were keeping our powder dry for the summer.

That's not strictly true.  That might be the average over a decent period of time, but across the last four transfer windows we've spent a grand total of less than £50m net.  We spent big when we came up, but given the Grealish money, we've kept our powder relatively dry for a couple of years now.  I've no idea what our FFP position ACTUALLY is, but it wouldn't surprise me if we had the wiggle room to spend £100m+ this summer if the manager wants to, especially given our performances since Emery came in, and European football on the agenda.

It's not really altogether about how much you spend though, it's just getting the right players in, whatever. Our most talented outfield player Kamara cost nothing last summer. Our world class GK was a relatively cheap £20m. On the other hand, Bailey, Buendia and Ings cost a combined £90m plus.

We just have to do shrewd business, but i would hope that if we have the chance to sign someone that Emery thinks will make a big difference but the cost is £50m or so, we'll still do it. And maybe more than once if need be.

You'd also think that they know that the investment to go from top eight to top four is likely to be more than the investment needed to go from bottom six to mid-table.

I agree. And I'd also agree with paul_e that Tim is a definite star-in-the-making.

If we weren't going to spend the money, I doubt we'd have got Monchi in.

We've not spent any money on June 28th which obviously for some means we won't spend any money at all.
