We don’t need squad players. We need players who can walk straight into the first team with those currently in the first team being replaced because they are the squad players. The likes of John McGinn, Leander Dendoncker, Buendia and arguably JJ are really decent players but if we want to move on a level, they need to be upgraded.  Same with Ezri, Konsa, Matty Cash.

I wouldn’t put that kind of ceiling on JJ yet. You’d hope he could kick on and become excellent.

I agree. But when he has dips in form we don’t have a replacement lined up. He will kick on I’m sure.

He has been poor for sometime now. Squad player at best for next season.

Indeed. When you consider he's two years younger than Gallagher at Chelsea, so for Ramsey next season is the equivalent to Gallagher having a decent year at Palace. And his numbers there weren't massively different to Ramsey's last season for us.

And these days Gallagher is linked with £40m moves and gets regular England call-ups.

Ramsey's got a long way to go yet, but there aren't too many 21 year olds doing better than him in the league at the moment. Even on current form.

Age doesn’t really come into it if he’s not performing though. We need consistency so need to buy somebody who can deliver that. Ramsey can then make sure he plays well when called upon.

I don't think we're in a situation where we can bring too many top quality players in without the promise of a decent amount of first team football, or indeed keep a significant number of players who have been getting a decent amount of first team football but we plan to change that arrangement.

Basically I think this whole thing of replacing, I dunno, Dendonker with Guendouzi then just expecting that it won't have some kind of effect on Luiz and/or Kamara is a load of rubbish. Maybe if we get European football next season then we can realistically promise 30+ games a season each to 3 players fighting over 2 positions. Without that though, it's looking a hell of a lot more like 20 appearances max for that 3rd choice player and I'm not convinced they'll hang around that long if that's all that's on offer.

Think we have to be quite careful IF we want to keep some players like Buendia or Ramsey then it can't be "an option off the bench" because that's no use for their careers and probably not that useful for us either longer term. We have to at least be telling them they'll get be getting regular enough football that they'll not see their future elsewhere.

I don't think you promise players x amount of games. It's up to them to compete and make the shirt theirs. Emery wants 2 quality options for  every position so there's then genuine competition and Emery can pick horses for courses and make meaningful tactical changes from the bench.

His comment about everyone being upgradeable could be quite telling. I think he'll be ruthless in his pursuit of making us into a CL team.

Consistency usually comes with age and experience, and Ramsey is getting there but has a way to go.

Indeed and there’s a balance to strike. He isn’t the finished article, and we don’t want to stifle him if his net gain could be high.

Agreed, but we also don't want to give him more latitude simply because he came through the Academy rather than being signed from the Bundesliga.

Loucas Moura for 23m? No thanks. https://tbrfootball.com/report-aston-villa-and-newcastle-open-talks-to-sign-23m-tottenham-player/

It doesn't say we'd be signing him for that. It says that they signed him for that, and we want to sign him for nothing as he's out of contract and they're not offering him a new one.

Still a no from me.

You can tell how much credence I gave it by the fact that I didn't bother reading the article. :)

I think we were linked with him in January as well but as you say it's still a no, even it's a free.

Agreed. I love him as a player but we need an alternative in his position for when it's not going so well for him, like currently.
