The Tammy Abraham links keep appearing, which, to some degree, makes me think there’s nothing in it

I keep seeing links to that Turkish midfielder who plays for Feyenoord too.

The comment that Emery made recently was telling that all players are upgradable.

I like that comment. There's no sentiment involved, just a matter of fact.  He's probably wrong on Martinez though as I can't see another all round better keeper in the world at the moment.  His very presence is as much as anything else. Hopefully his attendance at the Leicester v Everton game has Maddison on his wish list for next season.

....and Chelsea fans thinking they’ll get Martinez cos he’d be cheap as a non elite goalkeeper! The arrogance….. and of course Chelsea have done so well with their “elite” players haven’t they? Emi won the World Cup ffs

They may be disappointed. Didn't Dybala's missus say last week that Emi has been trying to persuade his Argentina teammates to join Villa, saying we're a much bigger club than people realise.

Christ, I hope that Romero doesn't fall for the patter.

I personally don’t think we’ll be majorly splashing out this summer. I think it’ll be 3 or 4 targeted signings, probably some less known, some more so. I don’t think we’ll be shopping in the markets for the likes of Abraham who would likely command a huge fee.

I'd certainly hope that if we are spending £80m or so on a player, it's on someone that is better than Abraham, given that's what he'd cost.

Very good player though he is.

I’ve never quite seen it with Tammy. I’ve always thought he was ok. Not necessarily much better than Ollie. And yes, I think it would be a figure in and around that amount myself.

Italy has turned him into a far better player than the one we had though.

Same, I don't dislike him, I just think he's been overhyped when the evidence is that he tends to have long periods without scoring many goals at the highest level. It gets masked by him having purple patches but in truth his record is no better than Ollie.

I would like Tammy but maybe that's the aura of his season for us in the Championship. Probably isn't that much if a step up from Watkins given the fee as you say.

However, the same criticism could be thrown at all but around ten strikers in world football.

Yes and I think there’s often a tendency to put a notional ceiling on a player at a stage in their career and assume they can’t get better.

For me it's not putting a cap on him, I just don't think he's currently better than we have and is similar enough to Watkins that I don't think they could play together. So would it be a good use of a huge chunk of our budget to bring him in. We need another option but if it's someone for at least £50-60m and in that mid-20s age range then they need to improve our team not just add depth to the squad. It's been the same reason I've not wanted him ever since we signed Watkins. The first year back I'd have taken him but because we needed so many signings we just couldn't afford him. If we'd have found another £15m and got him instead of Wesley I suspect that first season would've been much less stressful.
